A survey was given to assess students' insights in various areas of their college experiences

at University of Batangas. 100 Students were randomly picked from each engineering
department and were given questiontionnaires. Depending on the population on each
department, a sample group was obtained. 36 students taking mechanical engineering
constituted 36% of the sample, seconded by civil engineering which made up the 26%.
Remaining percentage were shared by Electrical engineering, Industrial Engineering,
Electronics and Communications Engineering and Computer Engineering, each having 17, 10, 6
and 5 respondents respectively.

100 engineering students showed their insigts on 10 various areas namely

Academic

Department, Accounting Department, Cashiers Office, Canteen, Guidance Counselling and


Health Office, Library, Registrars Office, Security, Facilities and Other related area. Based on
the survey, it appeared that engineering students are highly satisfied on the performance of the
cashier's office. It scored 3.33 weighed mean which is higher than the overall weighted mean of
3.15. Another areas which attained positive remarks were academic department, acounting
department, faculty's adherence to university standards which pertained to the "others" areas,
and guidance counseling and health office. Notable are the low results for the canteen area -

2.8 weighted mean. It appeared that engineering students saw high opportunities to leverage
canteen operations.

Considering each engineering major's assessment as shown in Table 3, it appeared that


most of the computer engineering students were highly satisfied on all departments. They
reached 3.73 weighted mean indicator that they are highly contented on each service area. On
the other hand, the weighted mean assessed by Industrial engineering students, resulted to
2.81, implied that they identified some areas for improvement especially in canteen and facilities
like laboratories, classrooms and restrooms.

As shown in figures 3 and 4, In the academic department, overall mean of 3.30 indicates high
students satisfaction rating from all aspects in the academe - academic advisory, faculty and
staff and grading system. They were satisfied on the tools the department is providing ranging
from supporting students needs, addressing their problems until finding solutions, alternatives
and opportunities to uplift their potentials to excel in their field of study.

Under academic department, overall mean of 3.35 for the academic advisory indicated high
students satisfaction rating on how the academic department suffices students needs and
problems on supporting class schedules, accessing of information and addressing opportunities
for working students to continue their studies and creating workable arrangements for irregular
student. High contentment also implied academic performance in facilitating students academic
progression, which encompasess personality development and career opportunities, from the
beginning of the program through graduation.

Also under academic department, overall mean of 3.28 for the faculty and staff indicated high
students satisfaction rating on how faculties and staff succinctly provide a satisfying interaction
with the students. Moreover, data showed that faculties and staffs are able to provide valuable
learning experiences to the students, which is derived from their teaching effectiveness,
classrooms management and innovative instructional methodologies. However, considering
each department's assessment, data also showed that civil engineering students were looking
for opportunities from the faculty members and staff, which would aid their needs and meet their
expectations. On a high note, weighted mean of 3.68 coming from computer engineering
students implied their high level of satisfaction on the faculty members and academic staff.

Additional area of concern for academic department is the grading system which achieved an
overall mean of 3.27 which indicated students satisfaction rating on fair, accountable and just
grading system. This score also reflected record transparency which would measure true
abilities and performance of the students and disclosure of those records making them available
to the students. However, score obtained from the civil engineering department, 3.00 against
3.27 general weighted mean, appeared that students were checking avenues to improve the
grading system.

Shown in Figure 8 are the assessment scores for each engineering department on the
Accounting Area. Overall, it appeared that engineering students are pleased on how they
experience the services rendered by the accounting department. Engineering students are
contented on how the department provides accurate assessment of fees and error-proof
examination permits.

Some students from electrical, civil and industrial engineering

departments, however, were seeing some avenues to strengthen Accounting departments


services and facilities. Those avenues might be related to accuracy of fees indicated in the
forms and inquiries or concerns pertaining to those fees.

Based on the results of the survey, it appeared that engineering students are pleased on the
services rendered in the cashiers office. The overall weighted mean of 3.33 entailed that
engineering students found it clear and easy following the process flow in paying their fees and
they were happy on having alternatives in paying fees which provided them more convenience.
Some Industrial engineering students, however, found some rooms for improvement. These
improvements might be related to the queue they were experiencing when paying fees at the
cashiers office.

Results showed that canteen is one of those areas with the most number of opportunities for
improvement. The weighted mean was only 2.80 which reflected that students were seeing
some issues to work on. Civil and Industrial engineering students highlighted that prices might
not be affordable and raised slight concerns on the quality, safety and variety of foods offered at
the canteen area.

Shown in figure 9 is the satisfaction rating in the guidance counseling and health office. It
appeared that overall, engineering students are satisfied on the services rendered by both the
guidance office and health office. Vital to the students needs is the availability of the heath
office, equipment and medicines which all achieved positive remark from the engineering
students. On the low light, they also looked on some avenue to better the availability health
personnel- nurses and doctors. With regards to the guidance counseling, engineering students
found their service satisfying.

Results showed that library is also one of those areas with the most number of opportunities
for improvement. The weighted mean was satisfying at 3.10, however, some engineering
students found lacking items on the services and facilities offered by the library. Good results
were obtained as engineering students agreed that the library had adequate collection of

learning materials ranging from audio visual formats to on-line materials. Industrial engineering
students, however, expressed their concerns with regards to the sufficiency of space to
accommodate the growing needs of the students.

Positive feedbacks were acquired from the engineering students about the services and
facilities of registrars office. They found the process as simple and easy to follow and that the
registrars office was providing documents on time and without error. However, there are also
students who saw needs for improvement especially in addressing the waiting and servicing
times.

Based on the results of the survey, it appeared that engineering students are pleased on the
services rendered by the security office. The overall weighted mean of 3.13 entailed that
engineering students found the office provided proactive security measures and had speedy
and timely emergency response plan. However, some students also looked forward on uplifting
the services and facilities at the security office.

Results of the survey showed that facilities are another area of concern as perceived by
engineering students. It only achieved 2.98 weighted mean which implied that some students
were dissatisfied in the school facilities. Major downsides were related to rest rooms.

Engineering students raised concerns that they were experiencing low satisfaction when they
were using the rest rooms. These concerns were related to the cleanliness, safety and user
friendliness. Another drawback was in lined with the laboratories students are constantly using.
Some students also expressed slight disapproval on maintaining universitys facilities and
equipment.

Shown in Figure14 are the assessment scores for each engineering department on other
areas like faculties sensitivity to the needs of the students, faculties and employees showing
pride by constantly wearing ID within the school premise and their adherence in the dress code.
Overall, students were satisfied on these areas. However, some students posed concerns on
the facultys adherence to the dress code of the institution.
