INTRODUCTION

1.1 Background of the Study

Modern generation may be experiencing better and more quality life. There are a lot of
changes in this world but some things were not revised. It may differ a bit but its wholeness is
still there. And one of these unchanged things is the Bullying Case.
Bullying is an intentional action by people who thinks they are more powerful than
others, the weaker ones. It is an abusive act that includes harmful and violent actions. It was
considered as a deed that involves physical, emotional and psychological harm or damage. It
may take or showed with physical afflictions that were repeated frequently. Most group of people
consider bullying as a grave violation on human rights.
According to the New Websters Dictionary, bullying is an act of coercing by threats. It is
usually done by dominating the power over someone, something or somebody, with the
combination of violent action against the victim.
Rani Rodriguez, an American actress and singer, once said that Bullying is never fun.
Its cruel and terrible thing to do to someone. If you are being bullied, it is not your fault. No one
deserves to be bullied, ever. She pointed out that bullying was never been good. It doesnt give
any advantage or benefits towards the victim and even to the bully.
In a modern and intelligent world like today, bullying is an unsolved ancient harassment
case among people. It might be between social classes, friends, peers, mates, co-workers, or even
between family members.

LITERATURE REVIEW

2.1 Introduction
This part of the study covers literatures that are related to the topic: Level of awareness of
the high school students of St. Lukes School of San Rafael, Inc. on bullying. It also covers some
existing researches and studies that are directly connected or related that can be very helpful to
this research.
This chapter is organized under the following titles:
2.2 Literature Review
2.3 Related Studies

2.2 Literature Review

According to stopbullying.gov (2013), aggressive behavior may be bullying depending
on what happened, how often it happens, and who it happens to. Bullying is an unwanted,
aggressive behavior among school-aged children that involves a real or perceived power
imbalance. The behavior is repeated or has the potential to be repeated over time. Both kids who
are bullied and who bully others may be having a serious, lasting problems.

Many bullying cases have been reported to the authorities, specifically school bullying.
Students are very much more aware of what is happening in school that the teachers and
especially the parents. In agreement with the study of Dr. Philip Rodkin, PhD (2002), fourth
through sixth graders found that most of the bullies in an elementary school are usually comes
from the most popular circle of friends and are socially connected students, as seen by teachers
and their fellow students. A theory of him has been basically proven that most of the bullies bully
because of one major reason, anxiousness and insecurity. They use systematic and barbaric
methods of force and browbeating, harmful, and inflicting stress to the person that is being
bullied.
Cases of bullying might be happening every one minute in different places in the world.
Schools are the most places where students or children are very prone for being bullied. We can
say that a student or group of persons harming or teasing another student is a normal scenario in
most of the parts of the school. Dr. Dan Olweus, PhD, a Norwegian psychologist, started a wide
and innovative research with reference to the true and harmful nature of bullying in the 1070s.
Olweus (1994) found out that the number of adults that are present and can supervise are
inversely pproportional to the number of incidents resulting to bullying.
Matthew 5:43-48 (Holy Bible)
43

You have heard that it was said, Love your neighbor and hate your enemy. 44 But I tell

you, love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you, 45 that you may be children of your
Father in heaven. He causes his sun to rise on the evil and the good, and sends rain on the
righteous and the unrighteous.

46

If you love those who love you, what reward will you get? Are

not even the tax collectors doing that?

47

And if you greet only your own people, what are you

10 | P a g e

doing more than others? Do not even pagans do that?

48

Be perfect, therefore, as your heavenly

Father is perfect. This passage has been studied by many different people, like pastors, ministers,
popes, Christian leaders, priests, nuns, students and politicians, across generations and nations. It
is very relevant to our study because it teaches us to love our fellows. It teaches the reader to
dont participate in bullying and if someone bullies you, dont fight, and pray for them.

21 | P a g e

5.4 Recommendation
Institutions such as schools are considered to be one of the grounds where bullying takes
place.
Hence, institutions like this should pay more attention with the quality of their social
environment for this is one of the factors that affects not only the name of the institution but also
the studying of the students.
The administration or the management could set up programs, seminars, social activities,
and/or campaigns that might enhance the quality of awareness and values of their respective
students regarding this matter.

5.5 Suggestions to Future Researchers

Due to the limitation of this study such as time, resources, etc., the researchers embarking
on the subject of bullying or related to bullying should consider researches such as this one, and
reliable articles and compositions on the internet.
Future researchers should also search articles or compositions regarding the kinds of
bullying, places where bullying takes place, effects of bullying to both the victim and the bully,
diseases caused by frequent harming, and the factors and reasons why bullying occurs. They
should also use easy-to-understand words and sentences so the thoughts of the reader might not
be different with the authors. They should be direct to the point.
