Vectors are

represented pictorially by an arrow from one point to another

represented symbolically by a letter with an arrow above it

Some Properties About Vector

Two vectors that have the same direction
are said to be parallel.
Two vectors that have opposite directions
are said to be anti-parallel.
Two vectors that have the same length
and the same direction are said to be
equal no matter where they are located.
The negative of a vector is a vector with
the same magnitude (size) but opposite
direction

Magnitude of a Vector
The magnitude of a vector is a positive number (with units!)
that describes its size.

Example: magnitude of a displacement vector is its length.

The magnitude of a velocity vector is often called speed.
The magnitude of a vector is expressed using the same
letter as the vector but without the arrow on top of it.

SLIDE 7

Components of a Vector
Any two or more vectors whose sum is
equal to a certain R are said to be
components of that vectors.

Vector Components

There are two methods of vector addition

Graphical :
represent vectors as scaled-directed
line segments; attach tail to head
- The
most practical situations, the vector usually
resolved into rectangular components.
Analytical:
resolve vectors into x and y
components; add components
Unit vector: A unit vector is a vector
whose magnitude is equal 1.

SLIDE 9

Resolution of a Planar Vector

Using Cartesian coordinate a vector A can be resolved into components x and y
where Vx and Vy are the x and y
components of a vector V.

Vx and Vy can be determined as

if there are the magnitudes and scalars

The magnitude and direction of V can be written as

Vx and Vy are called the rectangular

components of the vector V along the x
and y-axis.

Resolution of a Spatial
Vector

A general case of a vector in space which is a 3dimensional or spatial vector.
