The course introduces you to the practicalities of air

transport, economics and business statistics and the


principles of logistics and marketing with the option to
study languages. These areas are developed further in
Year 2 alongside management and enterprise skills. There
is an optional paid placement in Year 3 followed by the
final year, during which you are encouraged to develop
your own area of special interest.

Year 1
Core modules:
- Introduction to Air Transport
This module focuses on building foundation knowledge of
the civil air transport industry. It gives a broad overview on
issues in air transport, and explains and analyses the role
of air transport policy, law and environment. More
specifically it seeks to help you understand how airlines,
airports, air freight and air traffic control operate and how
they are dependent on each other. The module has an
even balance between theory and practice. The module is
taught by means of mixture of lectures and tutorials. The
course assessment and aspects of the end of module
examination will draw upon specific data and applications
from the air transport industry being studied by students.
- Commercial Management
This module introduces you to financial and commercial
management, helping to build your understanding of this
vital area of business management and helping to support
you in your future career. Youll have the opportunity to
develop your understanding of financial statements and
how these are used to appraise the performance of a
business and youll explore the use of information for
business control and management decision making. The
module is taught through a weekly lecture and seminar
and is assessed through a series of in-class tests and an
end of year exam.
- Principles of Logistics
This module provides a fundamental understanding of the
key aspects of logistics and supply chain management. It
focuses on the identification of the relationships between
logistics activities and looks at how changing business

conditions have impacted on the development of the


sector. The principles underpinning effective management
of material flows are analysed with specific regard to
inventory and distribution management and their role in
creating customer satisfaction. The application of
information technology and the need to comply with
increasing environmental regulations will also be
considered. Youll be assessed on the basis of group
coursework and a two-hour examination.
- Business Skills
This module will help you to develop your professional and
personal skills with an emphasis on employability and
enterprise. Lectures, workshops and tutorials will help you
to develop and practice your reading, writing,
presentation, teamwork and research skills. ICT skills will
be enhanced through the delivery of workshops and
competence testing. Data analysis and statistical
techniques will be used to show how these tools are vital
in performing the tasks required within industry. Youll
have the opportunity to develop the ability to choose, use
and manage appropriate mathematical, statistical and ICT
systems and techniques to produce and disseminate
meaningful management information. The module
incorporates elements of PDP and self-evaluation. A
weekend residential field trip in the first term will focus on
team-building skills. The module is assessed through a
portfolio of evidence and a series of class tests.
- Economics and Marketing
One half of the module provides an introduction to the
principles of micro-economics. Youll particularly focus on
applications in logistics, supply chain management, air
transport and transport. The other half of the module
introduces key principles of strategic and operational
marketing. Youll have the opportunity to gain an
understanding of the underlying concepts and theories
underpinning marketing practice and its application in the
sectors mentioned above. This is assessed through a
portfolio and an exam.

- Fundamentals of Tourism
This module will introduce you to the fundamental
concepts and principles relating to the study of tourism
and the tourist industry. The nature of tourism will be
explored through an analysis of definitions, trends, market
characteristics, determinants and motivations, product
development, and an outline of the main industry sectors.
The development of tourism will be analysed in the
context of its history, macro-environment and the
economic, social, cultural and environmental impacts that
it imparts. Principles of sustainable tourism development
will be introduced. The assessment will comprise a
coursework essay and a written exam.
- Transport: Challenges and Issues
This introductory module provides a perspective on a wide
range of policy-related topics focusing in the
transportation of people (primarily) and the transportation
of goods (secondarily). It provides a foundation for more
in-depth study at later stages. The assessment is based
around the completion of a portfolio of evidence and an
end of module examination drawn from pre-circulated
stimulus material on current issues.
- Organisations and People
The module will introduce you to the characteristics of
organisations and explore how they operate and what
influences them. The structures, operations and
management aspects of organisations will be analysed.
The specific behaviour of people at work will also be
examined in order to understand their motivations. Whilst
some of the theories of management styles will be
discussed, emphasis will be placed on developing your
personal skills with regard to key business activities. The
module is assessed through an individual coursework
report and an exam.

Year 2
Core modules:
- Physical Logistics Management
This module focuses on the physical logistics elements of

the supply chain, considering material handling, storage


and freight transportation and the associated
management of these activities. In addition to examining
the benefits and operation of alternative modes of
transport. Youll undertake group course work looking at
the design and operation of a large distribution centre and
also be assessed through an end of year exam.
- Planning Techniques for Logistics and Transport
Operations
This module introduces a range of practical and analytical
planning techniques used within the logistics industry.
Basic techniques used to solve logistics problems will be
explained in lectures whilst more complex issues are
addressed in computing tutorials. Youll become familiar
with the use of industry specific software in the area of
linear programming, planning, inventory control,
forecasting and simulation in logistics. Assessment is by
means of one piece of coursework and an open book exam
using computers.
- Human Resource Management and the Workplace
This module is designed to generate increased confidence
when entering and working in the workplace. The module
offers you the opportunity to stimulate your learning
through a series of employability workshops relating to
topics such as CVs, covering letters, application forms,
interviews and assessment centres and will introduce you
to a wide range of transferable skills. Human Resource
Management & Development will be introduced and the
module will demonstrate how this contributes to
organisational success in a rapidly changing environment.
The module will identify key HRM issues, practices and
procedures. Assessment through a portfolio of work and
exam.
- Airline and Airports Operations and Planning
This module provides an analysis of the major elements of
airline and airport operations (e.g. airline scheduling,
airport passenger operations) and will be relevant to you if
you intend to work in the airline or airport sector. It will
help give you a broader view of the airlines and airports

operational environment and procedure. The module is


assessed through a written assignment and an exam.
- Air Cargo Management
This module explains the issues of air cargo management.
The main emphasis is on air cargo but also more general
cargo topics (3rd party contracts, rail and road cargo) are
covered as these are also important for people working in
the air cargo business. In the module youll have the
opportunity to look at trends in air cargo. The module is
assessed through a written assignment and an exam.
Option modules: Choose one from a list which may

- The Travel and Tourism Industry
This module analyses the structure, operation and
organisation of the public, private and not-for-profit
sectors of the tourism industry. This will include tour
operators, travel intermediaries, accommodation
providers, tourist attractions, tourist organisations and
non-air transport providers. The activities, macroenvironment, legal and regulatory requirements and
products of all sectors will be analysed through the use of
relevant case studies. Assessment will comprise a
coursework report related to a sector of your choice and
an exam.
- Passenger Transport Management
The focus of this module is on the day-to-day operational
and strategic management of passenger transport
including urban, interurban and rural public transport
operations (heavy rail, light rail, bus, coach, mobilitysharing schemes) and private transport. It should help
contribute to your understanding of passenger transport
cost considerations as well as aspects of transport
demand and revenue management. This is relevant to
those of you who intend to work in the passenger
transport and tourism industries in the private and public
sector. The module draws on relevant concepts supported
by examples and practical issues emerging from different
companies in the sector. This module will be assessed
through individual coursework and an end of module

exam.
- Project Quality Management
This module introduces you to the various models &
frameworks, tools & techniques and underlying principles
of the quality movement and project management. Case
material relevant to manufacturing and service industries
is introduced and provides experience of practical
application, including the use of software (MS Project) for
project planning and control. Assessment is through a
group project and individual coursework.

Year 3 - optional placement year


The course offers an optional one-year (48 weeks) work
placement after the second year, in the UK or abroad.

Final year

Core modules:
- Strategic Supply Chain Management
This module evaluates the role of logistics and supply
chain management in helping to achieve the strategic
objectives of an organisation. Youll explore how managing
strategically across the entire supply chain can help an
organisation to achieve and maintain its competitive edge
in terms of market share and / or profitability. Youll have
the opportunity to diagnose problems within supply chains
and to demonstrate your grasp of how different supply
chain strategies can positively impact the performance of
the firm via a contemporary case-study based written
assignment and an exam.
- Project
The aim of this module is to help develop your skills and
ability to carry out an original investigation into a
particular problem. In the early stages of project
development, lectures provide guidance in various
important aspects of project formulation and
development, such as choice of appropriate methodology,
literature sources and review techniques, specification of
data requirements, data collection and data analysis. For
the remainder of the module, emphasis is placed on
individual study, supported by regular personal

supervision. At the end of the module you are required to


submit a Project Report of between 12,000 and 15,000
words, with a Feasibility Study, Progress Report and
presentation on progress.
- Strategic Management for Airlines and Airports
This module examines the different strategic management
approaches that may be adopted in air transport and
logistics. It mainly focuses on strategy formulation and
strategy implementation, which can help support you in
analysing globalisation and the competitive environment
in which the air transport and logistics industries operate.
It features those aspects which have particular relevance
and application to those of you who intend working for
airlines, airports, and other related air transport and
logistics sectors. More specifically, case studies are used
to combine theoretical aspects with practical issues in the
airline and airport sectors. Assessment is through an
individual piece of coursework and an end of year exam.
- Airline and Airports Economics and Marketing
This module comprises the major components of airline
and airport economics and marketing and is relevant to
those of you who are hoping to obtain management
positions in the airline or airport sector. Specifically it
seeks to help equip you with the key skills and knowledge
of airline/airport cost and revenue inputs in order to make
sound managerial decisions. Practical cases and examples
are developed throughout the module to support
theoretical understanding. The module is assessed
through a written assignment and an exam.

- Transport Economics and Policy
This module aims to provide you with the necessary tools
and in-depth knowledge that will give you the opportunity
to develop a thorough understanding of a wide range of
contemporary transport issues. These are analysed and
set primarily within a policy and economics context
suitable for the level of study. The module builds upon
concepts developed in year one and two. Assessment

includes coursework and an end of module exam.


- Retail and Manufacturing Logistics
This module examines the role of logistics in supporting
the retail industry and providing a basis for competitive
advantage. Youll have the opportunity to gain an
understanding of the structure of the retailing industry and
the increased pressures being placed on suppliers and
distributors. Retail network structures are analysed
recognising the impact of globalisation and the growth in
e-retailing on the total supply chain. Youll be assessed on
the basis of an individual report and an unseen exam.
- Sustainable Tourism
This module critically examines the concept of
sustainability and its application to the tourist industry. It
investigates some of the cost and benefits of tourism
development in terms of its impacts on host communities
and environments and analyses the ways in which
sustainable principles have been applied within the
industry. Planning for tourism at local, regional, national
and international level will be appraised in terms of the
application of these principles through a range of case
studies. Coursework comprises a written essay and an
exam.
