Laborator y Exercise No.

11
Slump of H ydraulic Cement Concrete

I. Reference:
AASHTO T 119-99, ASTM C 143/C 143 M 97

II. Objecti ve:

To determine the slump of freshl y mixed concrete.

III. Equipment / Apparatus:

Metal pan
Slump cone with metal base
Tamping rod
Slump apparatus
Scoop

IV. Procedure:
1. Obtain sample of concrete in accordance to the standard
procedure of sampling freshl y mixed concrete.
2. Dampen the mold and place it on a flat, moist, non-absorbent
(rigid) surface. It shall be held firml y in place during filling b y the
operator standing in the two foot pieces. From the sample of
concrete obtained, immediatel y fill the mold in three la ye rs, each
appro ximatel y on third the volume of the mold.
3. Rod each la yer with 25 strokes of the tamping rod. Uniforml y
distribute the strokes o ver the cross section of each la yer. For the
bottom la yer this will necessitate inclining the rod slightl y and
making approximatel y half of the strokes near the perimeter, and
then progressing wi th vertical strokes spirall y to ward the center.
Rod the bottom la yer throughout its depth. Rod the second la yer
and the top la yer each throughout its depth, so that the strokes
just penetrate into the underl ying la ye r.
4. In filling and rodding the top la yer, heap the concrete above the
mold before rodding is strated. If the rodding operation results
subsidence of the concrete belo w the edge of the mold, add
additional concrete to keep an excess of concrete abo ve the top of

the mold at all times. After the top la yer has been roded, stike off
the surface of the concrete b y means of a screeding and rolling
motion of the tamping rod. Remove the mold immediatel y from the
concrete b y raising it carefull y in a vertical direction. Raise the
mold a distance of 12 in. (300 mm) in 52s. b y a stead y upward lift
with no lateral or torsional motion.
5. Immediatel y measure the slump b y determining the vertical
difference between the top of the mold and the displaced original
center of the top surface of the specimen. If a decided falling awa y
or shearing off of concrete from one side or portion of the mass
occurs, disregard the test and make a ne w test on another portion
of the sample

VI. Data/ Calculation:

Report the slump in terms of inches (millimeters) to the nearest %
in. (5mm) of subsidence of the specimen during the test.

Computations:
Slump = inches
