influencedbynativeCelticlanguagesofNorthernRoman
GaullikeGalliaBelgicaandbythe(Germanic)Frankish
languageofthepostRomanFrankishinvaders.Today,owing
toFrance'spastoverseasexpansion,therearenumerous
Frenchbasedcreolelanguages,mostnotablyHaitianCreole.
AFrenchspeakingpersonornationmaybereferredtoas
"Francophone"inbothEnglishandFrench.
Frenchisanofficiallanguagein29countries,mostofwhich
aremembersoflafrancophonie,thecommunityofFrench
speakingcountries.Itisspokenasafirstlanguage(in
descendingorderofthehighestnumber)inFrance,the
CanadianprovinceofQuebec,westernSwitzerland,the
regionofWalloniainBelgium,Monaco,certainpartsof
CanadaandtheUnitedStates,andbyvariouscommunities
elsewhere.Asof2015,40%ofthefrancophonepopulation
(includingL2andpartialspeakers)isinEurope,35%insub
SaharanAfrica,15%inNorthAfricaandtheMiddleEast,
8%intheAmericas,and1%inAsiaandOceania.[1]
Frenchisthefourthmostwidelyspokenmothertongueinthe
EuropeanUnion.[3]1/5ofnonFrancophoneEuropeansspeak
French.[4]AsaresultofFrenchandBelgiancolonialism
fromthe17thand18thcenturyonward,Frenchwas
introducedtonewterritoriesintheAmericas,Africaand
Asia.MostsecondlanguagespeakersresideinFrancophone
Africa,inparticularGabon,Algeria,Mauritius,Senegaland
IvoryCoast.[5]In2015,Frenchwasestimatedtohave77to
