The World Health Organisation (WHO) ocially declares Sri Lanka a malaria-free country, after certifying that the lifethreatening disease had been completely eliminated in the island. With this, Sri Lanka becomes the second country in the
South-East Asia Region declared as malaria after Maldives by the WHO.
As per the International Union for Conservation of Nature's report, the Panda is now classied as a "vulnerable" instead of
"endangered" species, reecting its growing numbers in the wild in southern China. It also lists the eastern gorilla, the
largest living primate, as critically endangered in its latest red list of threatened species.
The Guinness World Records ocially designates Assams Majuli, covering an area of around 880 sq km and situated in the
Brahmaputra River as the largest river island in the world.

Deaths
Former Israeli Prime Minister and President Shimon Peres, best known for the 1993 Oslo Accords for peace and
accommodation of Israel with the Arab world passes away in Ramat Gan, Israel. He was 93.
Three-time Pulitzer Prize winner US playwright Edward Albee, the author of Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf dies aged 88.
Uzbekistan leader and former President Islam Karimov, one of Asia's most authoritarian leaders, dies aged 78.
Syed Shamsul Haq, one of Bangladeshs best known writers, passes away in Dhaka, Bangladesh following a brief illness. He
was 81.
