v12 Nomenclature

The Simulation tool from v11 has been renamed to ANSYS

ANSYS Mechanical
Mechanical .

The reasoning behind this is that all mechanical simulation (structural and
thermal) is handled with this tool.

It is NOT a licensing designation

designation. The Mechanical module can be run with
any ANSYS license (Multiphysics, Mechanical, Structural, NLT, NLS, etc.).
License selection is now defined using Tools>License Preference from the
Project Schematic page
page.

2009 CAE Associates

Mechanical Interface

Essentially the same as v11 with a few exceptions:

Mechanical is now a non-native Workbench application (runs in its own

window). Several Mechanical windows can be open simultaneously (the same
is p
possible with DesignModeler
g
and FE Modeler).
)
Several tasks formerly native to Simulation are now defined on the Project
Schematic page:

Geometry assignment and properties

Geometry updating
Parameter handling
Model duplication (creates a separate Mechanical application)
Additional (linked) environments (pre
(pre-stress
stress modal
modal, thermal structural,
structural static analysis
for linear buckling preload)
Engineering Data (materials only)

60

Linked versus non-linked systems

Previous to v12 all Simulation models in a particular project were

displayed in a single window and stored in a common .dsdb file.
At v12 only linked analysis types share the same Mechanical application.
Unlinked (Standalone Systems)

62

Linked systems

Linked systems use the same Mechanical window

window.

63

Standalone Systems

Standalone systems will have a unique Mechanical window

window.

64

Duplicating Models

Duplication of a model or analysis environment is now done on the Project

Schematic page.
Duplications share the same Mechanical application as the original.

65

File Saving

There is one save operation at v12: Save

Save Project
Project.
This can be accomplished from the Project Schematic page or any
application page (Mechanical, DesignModeler, etc).

67

Parameters

The parameter manager is now native to the Project Schematic page

page.
Double click on the Parameters box to open the Parameter Manager.

68

Database Migration

Since the project file format has changed legacy Workbench projects
cannot simply be opened at v12.
Pre v12 databases must be imported into the new release. This is
accomplished from the Project Schematic
Schematic.

FE Modeler

2009 CAE Associates

v11 FE Modeler Features

At v11 ANSYS introduced the capability of generating geometry from a

finite element mesh.

The process was FE code independent (works with ANSYS, Nastran, Abaqus,
etc).
Initial geometry was generated based on finite element mesh facets.
Transformations could be added to morph the mesh.
The mesh and solid model could be loaded into the Simulation tool and either
run using the morphed mesh, or remeshed in Simulation.
NO GEOMETRY DEFEATURING USING DESIGNMODELER WAS
POSSIBLE!

121

v12 FE Modeler Geometry Features

At v12 the ability to generate a parasolid file of the Initial Geometry and
load it into DesignModeler has been added.
Revive older FE models for full use in the Workbench 2 environment.

Solid 272/273

Solid 272 is defined by 4 nodes in the master plane

and the nodes created in the circumferential
direction based on the master plane nodes.

Each node has 3 DOF (X,Y,Z). Keyopt(2) for

specifying up to 12 nodal planes in the
circumferential direction.

Axis of symmetry can be defined in any direction.

Allows plasticity, hyperelasticity, stress stiffening,

large deflection and large strain.

Mixed formulation capability for nearly

incompressible elastoplastic materials, as well as
nearly and fully incompressible hyperelastic
materials.
