Pre-planning Considerations
Topic Analysis: This lesson will be an introduction to Year 7 Music class. Lesson
will discuss the outline of the term. Introduction to Gigajam.com. Health and Safety
discussion.
The key concepts of this lesson will involve class discussions
and activities.
This is an introductory lesson.
Literacy and Learner Considerations: There are many activities in this lesson. Due
to this please take note of the following considerations.
Class Discussions Throughout the lesson there are many class discussions.
Need to consider the speaking and listening levels of the students. Some
students may note be comfortable with class discussions. Kinaesthetic
Learners and Visual learners will also need other activities to cater for
individual learning styles.
This lesson introduces student to Health and Safety in music. This is a very
important part of this lesson. As students will be playing school instruments
and equipment in almost every lesson, it is important they understand the
health and safety requirements.
Students will pick their principal instrument in this lesson. If there are any
students who have a physical disability, certain instruments may not be
appropriate or possible for them to play.
Please consider that some of the students may have previous knowledge of
the topics being covered in this lesson. If any student has learnt any of the
instruments they must pick one they have not played before.
Learning Out comes: This exercise covers 4 of the Victorian Essential Learning
Standards.
Lesson Outcomes: At the end of the lesson the successful student will be able to:
Identify principal instrument they will be studying for the unit.
Students have an understanding of the Health and Safety requirements
in music class, on their instrument and other equipment.
Students will have had a preliminary practice on principal instrument.

Classroom Management Considerations: Classroom Expectations and
Consequences will be discussed throughout this lesson. From this 5 expectations will
be determined and used to manage the class.
Class management throughout activities could become a
concern. Ensure that each activity and exercise flows and that
not too much time is spent of each. Once groups have finished
the task move onto the next.
This lesson has been designed to be a fun and educational
introduction to music. Allow students to have fun and express
themselves. However consider that this might lead to some
disruptions.
If any student causes danger to himself, others or the
equipment, students will immediately be sent to the sub-school
co-ordinator.

Class discussion on the Unit outline for the term. Students will
learn an instrument through Gigajam and by the end of the term
will be able to play in a contemporary rock band and will design
rehearse and perform a concert to their peers.

Each student can have private practice with his or her instrument
for 25 minutes. This is an introductory lesson. Next lesson,
students will have the opportunity to practice for longer.
