Past Paper 2 (Extended) October/November 2010 (0500/22) 02

Re-read the descriptions of:

(a) The town in paragraph 2
(b) What the writer experienced from the top of the hill in paragraph 3 Select words and phrases from
these descriptions, and explain how the writer has created effects for using this language
Answer A
Points: (The town in paragraph 2)

It was a dilapidated town that was in a state of disrepair (ramshackle, run-down town)
Facilities are in poor quality (Cramped little room)
The town had the dull environment and atmosphere (had an atmosphere of yesterday)
It had droopy trees that was a part of the dull environment (sad, droopy trees)
A church that was in need of restoration and repair ( - stood a tiny church, sadly in need of
restoration)

In the story 'A Visit to Rataia', the author visits a town that was in a state or utter disrepair and
beautiful collectively. Throughout the passage is a description of what the author experiences and an
encounter with a caf owner in thought that he could make the town a civilised place.
There writer states in paragraph two, that the town was in a state of disrepair, this is apparent in the
line "ramshackle, run-down town". The writer creates an imagery to commence his description, the
effect created appeals to the reader that the town is dilapidated and needs restoration.
The facilities provided were substandard and inferior The line "Cramped little room" implies that the
hotel rooms were bijou and hadn't provided much, and indicates a negative diction by using the
adjective 'cramped' to suggest that the room was confined and small
Additionally, the writer continues to describe that the town had the dull ambience. The line "sad,
droopy trees" and "had an atmosphere of yesterday" creates the effect of the dull ambience and
personifies that the trees looked sad and limp.
In conclusion to the paragraph, the writer describes the church he sees and suggests, should be
restored. The quotation"-stood a tiny church, sadly in need of restoration" gives the impression that
the writer used the techniques of personification to imply that the church that 'stood' & 'hides'
behind the disturbing bushes needed restoration from its apparent state.
Answer B
Points: (What the writer experienced from the top of the hill in paragraph 3)

The writer was stunned by the natural beauty

He saw the wide stretch of golden sand
The sun reflected brightness like a sheet of glass

Mountains were fused into a purple haze

Silence was omnipresent and was broken by the magical bird songs.

In the third paragraph the writer described what he experiences. The writer was amazed by the
natural beauty that he saw as mentioned in the passage. The quotation "I was stunned by the natural
beauty" gives the impression of a positive diction, and creates a juxtaposition when contrasted with
the previous paragraph.
Additionally as the writer describes in detail of what he sees, he saw a wide stretch of golden sand.
The phrase "There was a bay with its magnificent stretch of golden sand" makes it evident that the
writer makes use of adjective, colours and imagery to create this effect and complement his
description. The writer makes use of simile to create a comparison between the sea that is glistening
in the sun that reflects the brightness 'like' a sheet of glass The is apparent in the line "reflecting the
brightness like a sheet of glass' Despite the negatives, he writer continues to describe the positive
dictions of what he experiences in the passage.
