2. CIVIC SERVICE ENGAGMENT


Social responsibility. Working to make a difference in the civic life of our
communities and developing the comcombination of knowledge, skills,
values and motivations make that difference, it means promoting the
quality of life in a community through both political and non-political
processes.
Pedalogical standpoint- What are the necessary components? Well
integrated into the class. Reflection activities.

A. (engagement, community service, internships, etc. )

Conceptual learning and developing ideas.

3. CIVIC ENGAGEMENT AND COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT


Difference and the relationship between the two. Civic=government by
and for the people. Example: Garcetti needs the LA voters to approve his
quarter of a cent tax increase to fund help for the homeless. Is it mutally
beneficial?

A. The relationship between the two (engagement, community service
(church based, communitys particular needs), internships, etc. ) Civic
enageement would be a top down approach but community action is
also about change and they quite often overlap. Civic engagement is
also collective action and social movements. Ex: Flynt water crisis
brings science into the civic engagement. CHANGE. How does change
happen?

Community engagement (action) is involvement. What forms does


this take: protext, action, developing ideas.

ii.

Class- what are the mechanisms of change for the public good?
Focus on the process.

iii.

CSULA wants to prepare students to engage in the real world.

4. SERVICE LEARNING: MUTUAL BENEFIT


A. A method where students learn by active participation in organized
service that addresses community needs. AND
B. Is linked to academic study through structured reflection. Service
Learning puts and equal emphasis on providing meaningful service and
curriculum relevant learning.
