TheFBIappearstohaveadoptedaninvasiveInternetsurveillancetechniquethatcollects
farmoredataoninnocentAmericansthanpreviouslyhasbeendisclosed.
Instead of recording only what a particular suspect is doing, agents conducting
investigations appear to be assembling the activities of thousands of Internet users at a
timeintomassivedatabases,accordingtocurrentandformerofficials.Thatdatabasecan
subsequentlybequeriedfornames,emailaddressesorkeywords.
Such a technique is broader and potentially more intrusive than the FBI's Carnivore
surveillancesystem,laterrenamedDCS1000.Itraisesconcernssimilartothosestirredby

widespread Internet monitoring that the

National Security Agency is said to have
done, according to documents that have
surfaced in one federal lawsuit, and may
stretch the bounds of what's legally
permissible.
Call it the vacuumcleaner approach. It's
employed when police have obtained a
court order and an Internet service
provider can't "isolate the particular
personorIPaddress"becauseoftechnical
constraints,saysPaulOhm,aformertrial
attorney at the Justice Department's
ComputerCrimeandIntellectualProperty
Section.(AnInternetProtocoladdressisa
series of digits that can identify an
individualcomputer.)
ThatkindoffullpipesurveillancecanrecordallInternettraffic,includingWebbrowsing
or, optionally, only certain subsets such as all email messages flowing through the
network. Interception typically takes place inside an Internet provider's network at the
junctionpointofarouterornetworkswitch.
ThetechniquecametolightattheSearch&SeizureintheDigitalAgesymposiumheldat
Stanford University's law school on Friday. Ohm, who is now a law professor at the
UniversityofColoradoatBoulder,andRichardDowning,aCCIPSassistantdeputychief,
discusseditduringthesymposium.
In a telephone conversation afterward, Ohm said that fullpipe recording has become
federalagents'defaultmethodforInternetsurveillance."Youcollectwhereveryoucanon
the (network) segment," he said. "If it happens to be the segment that has a lot of IP
addresses,youdon'tthrowawaytheotherIPaddresses.Youdothatafterthefact."
"Youinterceptfirstandyouusewhateverfiltering,dataminingtogetattheinformation
aboutthepersonyou'retryingtomonitor,"headded.
OnMonday,aJusticeDepartmentrepresentativewouldnotimmediatelyanswerquestions
about this kind of surveillance technique. (Late Tuesday, the Justice Department
responded with a statement taking issue with this description of the FBI's surveillance
practices.)
"Whatthey'redoingisevenworsethanCarnivore,"saidKevinBankston,astaffattorney
at the Electronic Frontier Foundation who attended the Stanford event. "What they're
doingisinterceptingeveryoneandthenchoosingtheirtargets."
When the FBI announced two years ago it had abandoned Carnivore, news reports said
thatthebureauwouldincreasinglyrelyonInternetproviderstoconductthesurveillance
andreimbursethemforcosts.WhileCarnivorewasthesubjectofcongressionalscrutiny
andoutsideaudits,theFBI'scurrentInterneteavesdroppingtechniqueshavereceivedlittle
attention.
Carnivore apparently did not perform fullpipe recording. A technical report
"Independent Technical Review of the Carnivore System" from December 2000

preparedfortheJusticeDepartmentsaidthatCarnivore"accumulatesnodataotherthan
thatwhichpassesitsfilters"andthatitsavespackets"forlateranalysisonlyaftertheyare
positivelylinkedbythefiltersettingstoatarget."
Onereasonwhythefullpipetechniqueraisesnovellegalquestionsisthatunderfederal
law,theFBImustperformwhat'scalled"minimization."
Federal law says that agents must "minimize the interception of communications not
otherwise subject to interception" and keep the supervising judge informed of what's
happening.Minimizationisdesignedtoprovideatleastamodicumofprivacybylimiting
policeeavesdroppingoninnocuousconversations.
Prosecutorsroutinelyholdpresurveillance"minimizationmeetings"withinvestigatorsto
discuss ground rules. Common investigatory rules permit agents to listen in on a phone
call for two minutes at a time, with at least one minute elapsing between the spot
monitoringsessions.
Thatsectionoffederallawmentionsonlyrealtimeinterceptionanddoesnotexplicitly
authorizethecreationofadatabasewithinformationonthousandsofinnocenttargets.
Butanearbysentenceadds:"Intheeventtheinterceptedcommunicationisinacodeor
foreign language, and an expert in that foreign language or code is not reasonably
available during the interception period, minimization may be accomplished as soon as
practicableaftersuchinterception."
Downing,theassistantdeputychiefattheJusticeDepartment'scomputercrimesection,
pointedtothatlanguageonFriday.Becausedigitalcommunicationsamounttoaforeign
language or code, he said, federal agents are legally permitted to record everything and
sortthroughitlater.(DowningstressedthathewasnotspeakingonbehalfoftheJustice
Department.)
"Takealookatthelegislativehistoryfromthemid'90s,"Downingsaid."It'sprettyclear
from that that Congress very much intended it to apply to electronic types of
wiretapping."
EFF's Bankston disagrees. He said that the FBI is "collecting and apparently storing
indefinitelythecommunicationsofthousandsifnothundredsofthousandsofinnocent
AmericansinviolationoftheWiretapActandthe4thAmendmenttotheConstitution."
Marc Rotenberg, director of the Electronic Privacy Information Center in Washington,
D.C., said a reasonable approach would be to require that federal agents only receive
information that's explicitly permitted by the court order. "The obligation should be on
both the (Internet provider) and the government to make sure that only the information
responsivetothewarrantisdisclosedtothegovernment,"hesaid.
Courts have been wrestling with minimization requirements for over a generation. In a
1978SupremeCourtdecision,Scottv.UnitedStates,thejusticesupheldpolicewiretaps
ofpeoplesuspectedofsellingillegaldrugs.
Butinhismajorityopinion,JusticeWilliamRehnquistsaidthatbroadmonitoringtonab
onesuspectmightgotoofar."Iftheagentsarepermittedtotapapublictelephonebecause
one individual is thought to be placing bets over the phone, substantial doubts as to
minimizationmayariseiftheagentslistentoeverycallwhichgoesoutoverthatphone
regardlessofwhoplacesthecall,"hewrote.

AnotherunansweredquestioniswhetheradatabaseofrecordedInternetcommunications
canlegallybeminedforinformationaboutunrelatedcriminaloffensessuchasdruguse,
copyrightinfringementortaxcrimes.One1978case,U.S.v.Pine,saidthatinvestigators
couldcontinuetolisteninonatelephonelinewhenotherillegalactivitiesnotspecified
intheoriginalwiretaporderwerebeingdiscussed.Thosediscussionscouldthenbeused
againstadefendantinacriminalprosecution.
Ohm, the former Justice Department attorney who presented a paper on the Fourth
Amendment, said he has doubts about the constitutionality of fullpipe recording. "The
questionthat'sinteresting,althoughIdon'tknowwhetherit'ssoclear,iswhetherthisis
illegal,whetherit'sconstitutional,"hesaid."IsCongressevenawarethey'redoingthis?I
don'tknowtheanswers."

reported seeing balls of fire, possibly
meteors,streakingacrosstheskySunday
nightFebruary4.
Nomajormeteorshowers were expected
in the northern hemisphere on Sunday
night, said Jim Lattis, director of the
University
of
WisconsinMadison
astronomydepartment'sSpacePlace.But
he said it was possible that a minor
shower may have been what prompted
callstoauthorities.
The National Weather Service's Sullivan office said reports were called in from Iowa,
northernIllinoisandonuptoGreenBay.
DozensofpeoplethroughouttheSt.LouisregionandIllinoisreportedsmallobjectsthat
looked like bright lights or something burning, with flaming tails behind some of them,
saidKenTretter,withtheMissouriStateHighwayPatrolinSt.Louis.
InWisconsin,aWaukeshaCountydispatchsupervisorsaidtwocallersreportedasighting
around8:15p.m.
TheWinnebagoCountySheriff'sDepartmentsaiditreceivedcallsfromOshkosh,Ripon,
Appleton,Neenah,andPulaski,amongothers.
ApreliminaryreportSundayindicatedthatthelightswerefromameteor,saidMaj.April
Cunningham, a spokeswoman for North American Aerospace Defense Command, or

"We had a pilot reporting seeing a meteor and that's really all the information we have

tonight,"Cunninghamsaid.
MysteriousLightsSpottedOverPhoenix,Again
Nearly a decade after the highly publicized Phoenix Light Phenomenon, more strange
lightshaveappearedinthenightskyoverdowntownPhoenix.
Tuesday night, mysterious lights lit up the western skies over Phoenix and soon after,
phonesbeganringingoffthehookatradio,televisionandpolicestationsfromwitnesses
wonderingwhatthelightswere.
The Yuma Marine Base claims it has the answer. Base officials said the ambercolored
flares came from training flights on the Goldwater Gunnery Range. They went on to
explainthattheamberflaresareusedastargets.
Witnesses said it appeared the flares were flying in a formation and base officials
explainedthattheflaresfloatdowntoEarthattachedtoparachutes.
Back in March of 1997, a huge object was spotted over parts of Arizona that many
witnessesbelievedtobeanextraterrestrialspacecraftthatwasdriftingslowlyandsilently
overtheregion.ThePhoenixLightPhenomenonbecameoneofthemostpublicizedand
welldocumentedUFOsightingsinrecenthistory.
TheAirForcesaidtheywereflaresfromanA10butmanycriticssaidflarescouldntfly
ontheirownoversuchalargedistance.

theories on its origin from across the

Readersfascinatedby the 18inch frozen
chunkthatsmashed into Andres Javage's
car Jan. 28 have suggested investigators
notoverlook"theUFOangle"andcheck
whethertheremightbeaconnectionwith
China"blowingup"asatellite.
Still,otherswereconvincedthefallingicewassimplyahoax.

Weather experts said weather conditions that day wouldn't create such a large ice brick.
Meanwhile, the Federal Aviation Administration is checking whether a passing airplane
mightbetoblame.
As authorities puzzle over what caused the phenomenon, Javage, 20, can take heart in
knowinghissmashedcarisnotalone.

Corolla.Momentsearlier,sheandher14yearoldsonhadparkedthecarandgoneinside.
"Ifmysonhadstillbeensittingthere,hewouldhavebeenkilled,"shesaid.
Gambone said her insurance company wouldn't cover the damage, and the FAA never
identifiedwhetheranairplanewasresponsible.
The graphic artist and Web designer built a Web site detailing her frustrating situation,
completewithpicturesofthewreckageandtrackingimagesshowingtheairplanethatshe
thinkscausedthedamage.
Kathleen Bergen, an FAA spokeswoman in Atlanta, said investigators are researching
whataircraftwereoverheadaboutthetimetheMustangwasstruckinTampa.
Javage'sfather,Carlos,saidhissonhasfullinsurancecoverageonhiscar.

Residents of a remote Chinese village are hoping that DNA tests will prove one of
history'smostunlikelylegendsthattheyaredescendedfromRomanlegionarieslostin
antiquity.

Scientists have taken blood samples from 93 people living in and around Liqian, a
settlementinnorthwesternChinaonthefringesoftheGobidesert,morethan200miles
fromthenearestcity.

They are seeking an explanation for the

unusual number of local people with
westerncharacteristicsgreeneyes,big
noses, and even blonde hair mixed
withtraditionalChinesefeatures.
"Ireallythinkwearedescendedfromthe
Romans," said Song Guorong, 48, who
with his wavy hair, sixfoot frame and
strikingly long, hooked nose stands out
from his short, roundfaced office
colleagues.
"There are the residents with these special features, and then there are also historical
recordsabouttheexistenceofthesepeoplelongago,"hesaid.
Studies claiming that Liqian has Roman ancestry have greatly excited the impoverished
countyinwhichitissituated.Thevillageisnowoverlookedbyapillaredportico,inthe
hopeofattractingtourists.Astatueattheentranceofthenearbycountytown,Yongchang,
showsaRomanlegionarystandingnexttoaConfucianscholarandaMuslimwoman,asa
symbolofracialharmony.
Even entrepreneurs have caught on: in "Imperial City Entertainment Street" there is a
CaesarKaraokebar.

The town's link with Rome was first suggested by a professor of Chinese history at
Oxfordinthe1950s.HomerDubspulledtogetherstoriesfromtheofficialhistories,which
saidthatLiqianwasfoundedbysoldierscapturedinawarbetweentheChineseandthe
Hunsin36BC,andthelegendofthemissingarmyofMarcusCrassus,aRomangeneral.
In 53BC Crassus was defeated disastrously and beheaded by the Parthians, a tribe
occupyingwhatisnowIran,puttinganendtoRome'seastwardexpansion.
But stories persisted that 145 Romans were taken captive and wandered the region for
years. Prof Dubs theorised that they made their way as a mercenary troop eastwards,
whichwashowatroop"withafishscaleformation"cametobecapturedbytheChinese
17yearslater.
He said the "fishscale formation" was a reference to the Roman "tortoise", a phalanx
protectedbyshieldsonallsidesandfromabove.GuJianming,wholivesnearLiqian,said
it had come as a surprise to be told he might be descended from a European imperial
army.Butthenthebirthofhisdaughterwasalsoasurprise.GuMeina,nowsix,wasborn

Anotherresident,CaiJunnian,38,saidhisruddyskinandgreeneyesmeanthewasnow
nicknamed Cai Luoma, or Cai the Roman, by friends. He has become a local celebrity,
andwasrecentlyflowntotheItalianconsulateinShanghaitomeethissupposedrelatives.
Theprofessor'shypothesistookalmost40yearstoreachChina.DuringChairmanMao's
rule, ideas of foreign ancestry were not ideologically welcome and the story was
suppressed.

Mr Cai said his greatgrandfather told him that there were Roman tombs in the Qilian
mountainsadayandahalf'swalkaway,buthehadneverconnectedthemtotheunusual
appearanceheinheritedfromhisfather."PeoplethoughtIhadaskinproblem,"hesaid.
The blood tests are part of a project undertaken by scientists and historians after local
authorities loosened control over genetic research. The results will be published in a
scientific journal. But Prof Xie Xiaodong, a geneticist from Lanzhou University,
cautionedagainstoverenthusiasm.
"EveniftheyaredescendantsoftheRomanempire,itdoesn'tmeantheyarenecessarily
from the Roman army," he said. "The empire covered a large area. Many soldiers were
recruitedlocally,soanythingispossible."
Theissuehassplittheuniversity'shistorydepartment,withsomescholarssupportingthe
claim,somerejectingit.ProfWangShaokuanpouredscornonProfDubs'sthesis,saying

For nearly 60 years, rumors have
circulated of strange flying objects
emerging from the ocean off our coast
and disappearing in a fantastic flash of
speedandlight.
Sailors, fishermen, dockworkers, police
officers,coastalresidentsandothershave
reported eerie otherworldly ships
emergingfromandsubmergingintolocal
waters.
UFOs, it seems, have established an underwater base somewhere in the deep, dark
recesses between the Channel Islands and the coastline between Long Beach and Santa
Barbara.
Despiteatendencytoscoffatsuchconspiracies,Idecidedtodoalittleinvestigating.You
know,justtobesure.
Tolearnmore,IcontactedUFOresearcherPrestonBennettofLosAngeles,whoappeared
ontherecentHistoryChannelspecial"DeepSeaUFOs."
Bennett reports more than 40 documented sightings off SoCal's coast since 1947,
includingseveralinandaroundLongBeachSanPedro.
"Inthesetypesofcases,UFOsareseenmovingintoandoutofthewater,floatingonthe
surfaceandalsotravelingbeneaththesurface,"Bennettsaidviaemail."Manyofthese
cases are wellverified, with witnesses including police officers, lifeguards, military
personnelandotherprofessionals."

Intrigued,IcontactedLt.ChuckEngbringoftheU.S.CoastGuard.
Engbring wasn't familiar with any recent UFO sightings at his agency, but recalled an
incident not long ago where passengers on a commercial flight departing LAX reported
seeing an unfamiliar object ascend from the sea to the sky off Point Vicente in Rancho
PalosVerdes.
That incident sounded strangely similar to a sighting in early November at Chicago's
O'HareInternationalAirport.IcalledLAX.
Although no one could recall the Pointe Vicente incident, I was referred to a July 22,
2002,sightingofaflyingtriangleoffthecoast.
MynextinquirywastotheLBPD.
They had nothing recent to report, but there's always the famous images captured by
LBPDhelicopterpilotsonDec.25,2004.
At around 11:30 p.m. that night, the chopper's videocamera recorded a strange glowing
object floating through the Long Beach sky. They forwarded the tape to local military
officials,whocouldn'torwouldn'tidentifyit.
AcopyofthetapewasevengiventoKABCandbroadcastaroundtheworld,butnobody
couldfigureoutwhatitwas.
MaybetherewassomethingtothisUFOstuffafterall?
MynextinquirywasatLongBeachAirport.
Airport Spokeswoman Sharon DiggsJackson said that in December, a resident reported
seeingunusuallightsmovingerraticallyacrossthenightsky.
Airportofficialscouldn'texplainit.
AsIlearnedduringmyresearch,suchsightingsdatebacktoWorldWarII,whenreports
ofUFOsandUSOs(unidentifiedsubmarineobjects)begansurfacingaroundthearea.
ThemotherofallsightingsprobablyoccurredonthenightofFeb.2425,1942,inwhat
becameknownasthe"BattleofLosAngeles."
Jittery from the recent attack on Pearl Harbor, military personnel manning antiaircraft
weapons along the coast were ready for action when reports spread of "unidentified
aircraft"approachingfromsea.

As theinterceptedradio message from the ship reads, "Saw fireball move inandoutof
seawithoutbeingdoused.Leftwakeofwhitesmokecourseerraticvanishedfromsight."
Thiswasallgettingabittooweird.

NoAnswertoBirdDeathMystery
A month after thousands of birds died
aroundEsperance,inWesternAustralia's
south, investigating authorities still have
notestablishedacause.
WA's Department of Environment and
Conservation (DEC) said postmortem
examinationsintothecauseofthedeaths
hadbeeninconclusive.
Up to 4000 nectareating birds are
estimated to have died in the area
betweenDecember7andJanuary2.
The birds, mostly yellowthroated miners, wattle birds, new holland honeyeaters and
silvereyes,plussomeseagullsandpigeons,werefounddeadnearwatersourcessuchas
sprinklersandwatertanks.
TheDECsaidbirdvirusesandbacteriologicalcauseshadbeenruledoutasthecauseof
deathandtoxinswerestillthemostlikelyculprit.
DEC nature protection branch manager David Mell said because the postmortem
examinationshadbeeninconclusivemorebirdswereneededfortesting.
"Anypersoncomingacrossclustersofeightormoredeadbirdsorotherfaunaisaskedto
reportthemattertotheirlocalDECoffice,"MrMellsaid.
Thedepartmentalreadyhasarrangedtocollectanother15birdsforexamination.

Tests have so far been carried out for some heavy metals and pesticides with other
toxilogicaltestscontinuing.
"Weappreciatethepatienceofthelocalcommunitywhileathoroughinvestigationtakes
place,"MrMellsaid.
TheDEChasruledoutanyconnectionbetweentheEsperancebirddeathsandthedeath
ofabout200treemartinsatahouseinNarembeen,240kmeastofPerthand380kmfrom
Esperance,inearlyJanuary.
Thetreemartinsdiedbecauseof"extremeweather"atNarembeenatthattime,theDEC
said.
Normally hot summer temperatures fell to about 16C on January 5 in Narembeen as
stormssweptthroughtheregion.

MysteriousShowersofStones
The catalog of unexplained events
includesmanystrangeinstancesofstones
falling from the sky or somewhere.
Showersofstones,oftenfromclearskies
and in areas where rockslides from
mountains cannot be blamed. Hails of
stones pummeling rooftops and people,
often causing damage and injury.
Investigationsoftheseeventsusuallyend
with unnerved victims and with officials
scratching their heads in puzzlement or,
out
of
desperation,
inventing
"explanations"thataresometimesasoutlandishastheeventsthemselves.
Reportsofthisparticulartypeofmysterygobackcenturiesandcomefromalloverthe
world.OneoftheearliestwrittenaccountswasbyRobertKirkin1690,whoattributedthe
throwingof"greatstons"tosubterraneaninhabitantsthathecalledthe"invisiblewights."
And an unexplained stonethrowing incident that took place in New Hampshire was
recorded in a pamphlet entitled "Lithobolia, or the Stonethrowing Devil," published in
Londonin1698.
In some of these bizarre cases, the rain of stones occurs in connection with other
paranormalphenomena,suchasahauntingorpoltergeistactivity.
InthefamousBellWitchhauntingof1817,whichincludedahostofstrangegoingson,
neighborsofthebeleagueredBellswerepeltedwithstonesthrownbyanunseenentity.
Thephenomenonisdefinedbytheinabilityofinvestigatorstoidentifyanyassailantsor

vandals,andusuallybythelackofanymotiveforsuchanassault.Sothequestionsarise:
Wheredothesephantomstonescomefrom?Whoorwhatisresponsibleforthrowingor
dropping them? Are there natural explanations for the phenomenon? Consider these
remarkablecasesanddrawyourownconclusions:
Harrisonville,Ohio,1901ThestoneattackonthissmallvillagebeganontheSunday
afternoon of October 13 when, as the Buffalo Express reported, "a small boulder came
crashingthroughthewindowofZachDye'shouse."Noculpritcouldbefoundaroundthe
isolated house... and this was just the beginning. The next day, dozens of stones rained
down in the heart of the village, breaking windows and striking citizens. Were
mischievous kids to blame? The next day, all of the male children of the village were
gatheredtogether(howcouldgirlsdosuchathing?),andstonesfellforathirdday.None
ofthevillagerscoulddetectwherethestoneswerecomingfrom.
Sumatra, 1903 W. G. Grottendieck wrote about how small black stones, hot to the
touch,camerainingdowninhisbedroomas1a.m.Themostbizarreaspectofthiscaseis
thatthestonesseemedtocomethroughtheroofwithoutmakingholesinit,andtheyfell,
hesaid,inamotionthatwasslowerthanwouldbenormal.
Marcinelle, Belgium, 1913 For four days in January one house was besieged by an
invisible stone thrower with remarkable accuracy. Police officers began to watch the
houseinanattempttocatchthevandal,butonewroteinhisreport:"Ihaveseenastone
arriving in the middle of a large windowpane and then came others in spiral round the
firstpointofimpact....Ievensaw,inanotherwindow,aprojectilecaughtinthefragments
oftheglassofthefirstholeitmade,andsubsequentlyejectedbyanotherpassingthrough
thesamepoint."Nostonethrowerwaseverseen,althoughanestimated300stonesstruck
thehouse.
Ardeche,France,1921Mostoftheseeventsareshortlived,lastingonlyafewdaysat
most.ButbeginninginSeptember,afarmhouseinFrancewasvictimizedforfourmonths.
Thestonesdroppedatallhoursoftheday,sometimesstrikingthefamily'schildrenanda
clergyman who was called in to investigate. In this case, apples were also thrown and,
again, with inhuman accuracy: apples came speeding in through small holes in the
shuddersmadebypreviousapples.
Sumatra,1928Oneofthemostastonishingcaseswasexperiencedandreportedbythe
renownedparanormalinvestigatorIvanT.Sanderson.Whilesittingontheverandaofan
estatehouseasaguestoneevening,ashinyblackpebbledroppedontotheverandaoutof
nowhere. Dozens more followed. Sanderson, who was familiar with the phenomenon,
triedanexperiment.Heorderedthestonesgatheredupandmarkedwithchalk,paintor
whatever else could be used. They then threw the stones back out randomly into the
garden and shrubbery. "We must have thrown over a dozen such marked stones,"
Sandersonwrote."Withinaminutetheywereallback!Nobody,withapowerfulflashlight
orsupereyesight,couldhavefoundthoselittlestonesinthattangledmess...andthrown
thembackontotheveranda.
Yet,theycameback,alldulymarkedbyus!"
Oakland,California,1943InAugustofthatyear,Mrs.IreneFellowsfinallycalledthe
police after two weeks of stones pelting her house at various times of the day. At first
skeptical,thepoliceinquirybecameseriouswhentheirinvestigationclearlyidentifiedthe
pockmarksofthefallingstonesonMrs.Fellows'roofandwalls,andbythelitterofstones
onherlawn.Mrs.Fellowsandmembersofherfamilywerefrequentlyhitbythestones,
although to no serious injury. The thorough police investigation could offer no
explanationforthestones,whichseemedtomaterializeoutofnothingness.

Brooklyn,Wellington,NewZealand,1963Stonesandapplesareonething,butwhat
about money? Why would a vandal throw money? On March 24, a guest house was
inexplicably battered by a hail of stones and a few coins. Police were called and
unsuccessfully searched for the perpetrator of the assault, which lasted for seven hours.
Windows were smashed and people were struck, but none injured. The coins included
NewZealandpenniesandalargecoppercoin.Themysteriousattackoccurredagainfor
twomorenights,thenstopped.
Skaneateles, New York, 1973 Most often, a particular house is the target for this
phenomenon, but in this highly unusual case, two fisherman became the victims of the
fallingstonesaparanormalstormthatfollowedwherevertheywent!Therainofpebbles
began as they were finishing their fishing expedition and followed them as they made
their way to their car. The shower ceased for a while, then resumed when they stopped
brieflyontheirwayhome.Decidingtheyneededadrink,theywenttoabar,andwhen
theycameoutsometimelater,therainofpebblesbeganagain.Astheywereabouttogo
their separate ways in their hometown of Liverpool (about 25 miles northeast of
Skaneateles),thelittlestonesdroppedonthemonelasttime.
Arizona, 1983 The attack on the Berkbigler family began in September, just as they
movedintotheirnewhome.Largerockscrasheddownonthehouseeverynight,usually
betweenthehoursof5:30and7:00p.m.Thelocalsheriff'sdepartmentcoulddetermine
no assailant, even with helicopter surveillance. The authorities became reluctant to visit
the Berkbigler home when they too were struck by the falling rocks. This went on for
weeks,culminatingonDecember4whiletwonewspaperreporterswereinterviewingthe
family. Rocks slammed into the side door of the house for two hours. What's most
mysterioushereisthattostrikethisdoor,therockshadtopassthroughthegaragewherea
vanwasparked,throughanarrowtwofootspace.
Thisisjustasmallsamplingofthehundredsofsuchcasesthathavetakenplaceoverthe
lastcentury.Thereisnoeasyexplanationfortheserainsofrocksandstones.Something
supernaturalismostdefinitelytakingplace,andmostresearcherstheorizethatitisaform
ofpoltergeistphenomenaaphysicalmanifestationcausedmostlikelybytheminds(or
powerful electromagnetic brain activity) of the victims themselves. But this meager
explanation poses more questions than it answers, especially in the cases in which the
veryphysicalstonesseemtomaterializeoutofthinair.
