From Fr. Dan:

Over the last few weeks, we have been moving closer and
closer to starting our new building.
The Knights house has been emptied the parish, the
Boy Scouts, and the Knights had things stored in it. The hearthstone from the house has been preserved to go into our new
building (it consists of arrowheads found on the property set
in cement). The house is going out in grand style in service to
our community, providing a place for our local re department
to practice (something they have been very thankful for since
they seldom have an opportunity to use a real house).
Fences have been put up, and I strongly urge everyone to
observe them. By the time this le$er appears in the bulletin,
some substantial work could be under way. Certainly, it is
immanent. That being said, you are encouraged to walk
around the edges and ask questions!
This is really an exciting time for us as a community. We
will be able to use the Lake House by the time we get to our
25th Anniversary feast day and picnic on October 1, 2017. That
is the projected date for the dedication of the building.
Speaking of picnics, I want to thank everyone who helped
make our picnic last weekend such a success. The Knights
provided the usual excellent food, and so many people pitched
in to help out at many stages. Everyone there seemed to have a
really good time. This kind of fellowship is what our new
Lake House is about bringing us together and
strengthening our community, so we can truly be the presence
of Christ and bring that presence out to the world.
Peace and Love, Fr. Dan

ANNUAL ROSARY RALLY FOR PEACE

Saturday, October 15, 12 PM

St. Michael Catholic Church
Join us on Saturday, October 15, for the
99th Anniversary of Our Mother Mary appearing to
the Children of Fatima. The Miracle of the Sun
Dancing in the Sky was witnessed by 70,000 on that
day in 1917.
She asked the children to pray the Rosary and
make sacrifices to bring about peace. She also asked
them to spread this devotion. This year, there will be
15,000 Rosary Rallies across America on
October 15. Now, more than ever, we need to turn
to Mary to petition her Son for a resolution to the
increasing unrest in our world.
Our Rally will begin with prayer and song starting
at 12 oclock noon and ending around 1:00 PM.
With construction beginning behind our church,
we will gather in front of the church, in the grassy area
along Springfield Road. Please bring a chair.
If you need more information about this years
rally, you can contact Nancy Harris at
njharris4@verizon.net.

Marys Corner
Our Lady Of The Rosary

Friday, October 7, is the Feast of Our

Lady of the Rosary. Originally, the rosary
was called The Psalter of Mary. 150 prayers
starting with Ave Maria, that we now
divide into the Joyful, Glorious and
Sorrowful Mysteries, inspired by scripture.
Prior to the 13th century, the Latin word
rosarium was used to describe a rose garden,
or grouping of roses in a wreath or bouquet.
It was during the lifetime of St. Dominic
that the word rosary came to be associated with the Marian
Psalter of St. Dominic.
As the story goes, in 1422, Mary appeared to a
Franciscan novice who had a habit of adorning a statue of
Mary with roses. In the monastery, it grieved him that he
no longer had flowers to bring to Mary. She appeared and
said Recite devoutly my Psalter. As he prayed each Hail
Mary, she wove a rose into a garland for herself. At each
Our Father she added a lily to the garland. This was the
origin of the name rosary.

Children/Youth: Who are the people in your life whose needs
you need to listen to?

Adults (RCIA) is a ministry for those
who are not baptized or who have
been baptized in another faith

INFANT BAPTISM
Catechist of the Week
Our Catechist of the Week is Ellen Guidry. A former leader in the
Liturgy of the Word with Children, Ellen is in her rst year here
as a catechist in the Kindergarten faith formation classroom
program at the 9:15 AM Mass. Ellen and her husband have four
daughters and two dogs in their family. When asked to share with
us her preferred style of prayer, Ellen told us that conversational
prayer was her favorite - talking and listening to God. She would
like the children in her class to understand that prayer can
happen at any time and in any place. You can pray with your eyes
open or closed. There is no wrong way to pray. Talk to Godhes
a great listener! Thanks and God bless you, Ellen, for stepping
out in faith to bring our young ones into closer relationship with
Jesus this year!

To have your child baptized at

Gratitude is a popular, poster virtue these days,
but inspiration does not always
translate into action.
Today do two acts of gratitude.
#1: Notice and thank your beloved for
an act of kindness.
#2: Note a problem in your life. Turn it around
by imagining how it could have been worse.
Thank God.

Invite someone home for the holidays!

Many of us know of a friend or family member who
has, for any number of reasons, grown distant from the
Catholic experience. The Catholics Come Home team at
St. Michael prayerfully suggest you gently invite them to
consider any of the Landings sessions that will be held
during the upcoming months.
Landings is an eight-week series of discussions
designed to serve as a re-introduction to the basics of
our faith. No judgment, no criticism; just reflection on
a 2,000-year-old tradition that continues to call to all of
us, no matter how distant we have grown or uncertain
our path.
Visit the St. Michael website under
Adult Formation -> Catholics Come Home,
or contact
kenfeldt@comcast.net
for details.

It's time to come home for the holidays!

The Traveling Vocations

Cross ministry has been ongoing
at St. Michael since 2006.
If you would like to take a cross
home for a month to pray for
vocations to the priesthood and
religious life, you may approach one of
our volunteer inviters who will be
happy to arrange for you to receive the
cross at Mass on the first Sunday
of the month you choose.
Single people, couples, and families are
all welcomed to participate in this very
rewarding ministry. Fr. Dan encourages
parishioners to accept the Vocations Cross
for those who cannot be present at Mass,
i.e. Military, home-bound, students,
nursing home residents, etc.
Both will be recognized in the Defender.
Current Traveling Cross Inviters:
Joe McGreal (5:00 Sat. Mass)
Zelda Burke (7:45 Sun. Mass)
Cheryl Dulog (9:15 Sun. Mass)
Greg Moczygemba (11:15 Sun. Mass)
Grace DiLiberto (5:00 Sun. Mass)
If you would like to receive the Traveling
Cross, please contact the inviter at your
respective Mass. For more information,
please contact Al and Carol Merolla,
Coordinators of the Adoration/Vocations
Ministry, at almerolla@msn.com.
Jesus, Master, have mercy on us!
How will you respond in gratitude
to the mercy the Lord has shown you?
Consider giving thanks as a priest,
deacon, or in the consecrated life?
Call Father Michael G. Boehling,

change, marital status, etc.)
for your family.
We like to keep this updated

Wade Emmett, family member #53, joined the new Roman Catholic Church in the West End with the initial 250
families who were ready to take a chance to become part of a church based on the documents of Vatican II. He
listened as Fr. John Leonard told the new members that once they decided what they wanted this parish to be
and do, it would be up to them to recognize God's presence in themselves and to do the work of making the
parish what they wanted. It was not long before people began to find their niche, and so it was with Wade. He had
his camera as he captured moments in our parishs early history: parishioners taking ownership of their new
parish on the roof of the small rancher; coming to clean-up day with rakes and paint brushes in hand; coming
together to form Pastoral and Finance Councils; making banners to transform the stage at Short Pump Middle
into a makeshift sanctuary. Thanks to Wade, we have pictures of it all. Because of Wade, all families with children
who ever made first communion here have their own picture of the actual event and we have a pictorial record of
the Vocation Cross recipients. It is obvious that Wade has shared his love for this faith community with his
camera and quiet demeanor that almost made his presence invisible. Wade and his wife Rebecca have had to
care for their daughter who has been ill for some time. She remains on our prayer list, as does Wade.
Our prayers, love, and gratitude go to the Emmett Family. Thank you, Wade!

St. Michaels Golden Angels

Thank you to the many Angels who
have either sent me activity opportunities
or have stopped me at church to share
their thoughts on what they would like to
do with our ministry.
We will have the first of several
meetings on Wednesday, October 12 right
after 8:30 AM Mass. We will start with a
lite breakfast in the parish hall and discuss
the many great suggestions we have
received. The goal is to start implementing
some of the suggestions and create a time
line for future activities.
If you cant make this meeting, continue to send me your
suggestions. We will have several other meetings that you will
hopefully be able to attend.
Please email me at mehazel1@comcast.net or call
804-364-1352 and let me know if you will be attending. We
want to make sure we have enough breakfast for everyone.
Thank You.

How much did you spend on groceries, gas, fast food, and pharmacy this past week
or in the past 30 days - $50, $100, $500 or more?
Now for the interesting question.
How much of those purchases were made using SCRIP gift cards you purchased
from St. Michael?
With your purchase of SCRIP gift cards, you can make your routine purchases and St. Michael
reaps the benefits. All profits are used for the parishs monthly mortgage. We can all pay a large portion of
the church mortgage with our intentional use of SCRIP each week.
Your regular use of St. Michael SCRIP truly does make a difference. Please buy SCRIP, either at the table
before and after Masses or during the week in the office. We offer payment options of credit/debit, cash, or
check. WE NEED YOU!!!!

to soon fielding at least eight teams of
caseworkers in the vineyard of the Lord.
Join us! Serve God, grow spiritually, help those in need, and
work with a dedicated group of Vincentians.
