Japanese Stab Binding

Sketchbooks!

What you will need:

70 Pages of 8.5"x11" Copy


Paper
2 Pieces of White Cardstock
4 Pieces of Colored Paper
Pages being used for front and
back covers
Ruler or Template
Pencil
Drill
Spare secKon of 2"x4" wood
to Drill into
Spray Glue
Scissors
Book Binding Needle
String or Twine
(crochet thread preferred)
Big Binder Clips to hold pages
together or Rubber Bands

Cut cover paper to - 1 larger than the


cardstock.

Spray a light layer


of spray glue across
back side of cover
page.
Line cardstock up.
Press from center
out, ensuring there
are no bubbles and
cardstock is rmly
aWached.
Cut corners from
front and back
cover *not quite to
the cardstock.

Fold in each of
the 4 sides.
Start from
center and press
out.
*Tip* - Roll
nger around
edge of
cardstock to
ensure a
smooth, clean
edge.

Cut 2 sheets of colored paper down .


Use spray glue to aWach it to inside of front
and back cover.

Assemble book by
stacking the 70 pages
together and covers
Add the other 2
colored pages
between the white
paper and book covers
Use binder clips or
rubber bands to hold
pages together and
keep them from
slipping.
Use drill to add holes
to all pages.

Measure and cut


string.
String should be 2
arm spans
(about 10 `).
Double up string on
needle.

Begin sewing at the


1st hole, sending
needle back to front.
Pull needle up
through enKre book.
Leave a 2-3 tail
hanging from the 1st
hole (will be used to
Ke at the end).

Loop thread,
going through the
1st hole again,
pulling needle up
through the book
from back to
front.

Move to hole #2.


Sew from top cover to
boWom cover.

Loop around; go
through hole #2
again.

Move to 3rd hole, sew from back cover


up to front cover.
Loop around, go through 3rd hole
again.

Move to 4th hole, sewing


from front to back.
Loop around, go through
4th hole again.
For the 3rd Kme, loop
around and go through 4th
hole.

Sew back up the


book repeaKng all
steps
Each hole should
have been looped
through 2 Kmes
Stop when back
to 1st hole

Tighten string around outside of book if needed.


Tie 3-4 secure knots with two ends using needle as
a guide.
These may be cut or le` long to use as book marks.

Write your name


in sharpie on
spine.
Using your nger,
smear Elmers
glue over spine
and string to
make stronger.
Let dry.
Add your Art!!
