DAN RUSSELL
HEAD COACH

Always Uphill

If we have not made an attempt to better ourselves

in some way today, what have we done?
No one is born the fastest or the
strongest or the smartest. In competitive
sports, there will never be that moment
when nothing more needs to be done
to stay ahead of the pack no one ever
played king of the plateau.
Dan Russell preaches continuous
improvement to his guys because it
is something that he practices. That
statement doesnt need a whole lot of
defense when you take a look at the
exceptional recruiting that he and assistant
coach Kevon Davis have done this year.
Im a firm believer that you have
to recruit an athlete to your philosophy
but coach each personality differently to
get the most out of them, says Russell.
Not just in their basketball lives, but
academically and socially as well.
Russell still aims to get the best
players off the best teams who were
the toughest kids. However, he is more
conscious in pursuing would-be T-Birds
that can align themselves with the culture
and brotherhood that he has established.
He also requires them to understand that
he is invested in who they are both on and
off the court.
We coach hard here, and players
have to play hard, he says. We want our
players to see success. Success breeds
happiness and if you are happy you win
more games.
Improvement and the potential
thereof can also be found in Russells
scheduling of much more challenging
nonconference play.

When you work hard and enter the

pre-season ranked #24, theres a huge
target on your back every night and
everybody is gunning for you. I think this
has created a sense of urgency for our
guys, not just in practice but individual
workouts, in class everything we do,
Russell says. Playing guys that are more
talented and better coached will prepare
us to do battle in our conference season.
Russells affiliation with the
Thunderbirds dates back to his days as a
ball boy for the team, when he sometimes
got to sit on the bench. Growing up he
seldom missed the chance to watch the
hometown team.
He attended Casper Natrona County
High School, where he was a two-sport,
two-time all stater (he still holds the
single season total yardage record in
football). When it came time to take the
next step it was pretty easy. He had always
wanted to be a Thunderbird, so he headed
up the hill to play.
Russells connections to Casper
College run even deeper. His parents are
alumni of Casper College and so is his
sister Jill, who played for Gary Beckers
T-Birds. (His older sister Jennifer played
for the University of Wyoming.)
To this day, Russells name is
prominent in the T-Bird record books
(3-point field goals and percentage).
After two years at Casper, Russell finished
his career at Black Hills State University.
He earned his education degree at the
University of Wyoming, where former
head coach Heath Schroyer gave him

his first coaching break. He spent a year

as Schroyers graduate assistant before
Davidson lured him back to Casper to
serve as his assistant.
Russell learned a lot from Davidson.
Like Davidson, he likes an up-tempo style
of play and he likes athletes who can
play 94 feet. But understand this: Russell
does not coach helter-skelter basketball.
I would like to play fast and let them
go, he says. But there is a happy
medium. You have to have the discipline
to value every possession, offensively and
defensively. You have to be able to play
at different tempos. In the postseason,
the team that advances always has great
transition defense. That is why we spend a
lot of time on transition defense.
Russell believes in priorities and
teaches the important things every day,
such as character on and off the floor,
important for a program like Casper. I
want to make sure (the players) know what
it means to play here. I want them doing
things right because of the foundation and
traditions that have been established here.
I hope we will build a culture of
toughness and character, he adds. All
fall we have been preaching effort and
attitude. We want to be tough enough
to get stops and tough enough to finish
plays.
As fans, friends, and even family,
there is so much more that goes into
basketball and that comes out of it then
what we see on the court. Russell knows
this, he embraces this, and strives to
make it better on both ends.

KEVON DAVIS

TYLER HURLEY

ASSISTANT COACH

ASSISTANT COACH

Kevon Davis enters his second year

as assistant mens basketball coach. A

2010 graduate from West Chester University, Davis

comes to Casper College via Harcum College in
Philadelphia where he helped lead the Bears to the
National Junior College Tournament. Davis helped
coach several players who have signed Division I
scholarships and strives to push athletes to become
better people and not just better basketball players.
Coach Davis experience, as well as his recruiting
ties to the northeast and east coast, make him a
great addition to the Thunderbird staff. Davis will
continue to assist head coach, Dan Russell with player
development, scouting, as well as with game and
practice planning, game coaching and recruiting.
Kevon is a coach who knows what it takes to
prepare kids for the next level academically and on the
court, Russell says. He does everything well, and
thats what we demand here at Casper.

Tyler Hurley is entering his first

season with the Thunderbirds. A native of

Anaconda, Montana, Hurley played two years at the

University of Montana under current Oregon State
Head Coach Wayne Tinkle from 2007-2009. He
finished his basketball career at Montana Western in
Dillon, Montana under Montana Hall of Fame coach
Steve Keller. He helped his team to 72 wins, one
conference championship, and three consecutive
NAIA National Tournaments.
Hurley spent the last two seasons as the head
coach at St. Regis High School in Montana. He
guided his team to two successful seasons putting
out a record of 30-15. He also served as the athletic
director at St. Regis High School.
Tyler will be involved in every aspect of our
program from player development, recruiting, game
preparation, and travel. We are really happy to add
someone with Tylers work ethic and eagerness to
join our program and coach at the collegiate level,
said head coach Dan Russell.
Hurley holds a bachelors degree in physical
education and is currently pursuing a masters
degree in coaching and athletic administration from
Concordia University Irvine.

TRUST PRECEDES WINS

Leadership and maturity in no short order with new recruits

The life of an NJCAA coach

anchors heavily in a state of
perpetual recruitment.

Talent and depth are highly sought after

commodities and obviously the most noticeable
characteristics of an athlete. But with only two
returning T-birds this year, head coach Dan Russell
was equally focused on the other intangibles that
transform good players into memorable ones.
When you add 13 new guys to a roster, one
of the biggest challenges is instilling our culture
early, says Russell.
Getting them to play together, identify roles,
and then buy into those roles ... a lot of it is team
chemistry. We have to spend time together to learn
each other, trust has to be built.
Russell is very pleased with returning T-Birds,
Shymar Brewster-Russell and Benson
Osayande and will be trusting in the progress they
have made over the past year. At 69 Benson lived
in the weight room during the off-season and has
vastly improved his perimeter and ball handling
skills. Meanwhile, Brewster-Russell has become a
very good decision maker with the ball at the wing
position.

Hes unselfish, says Russell. Hes a

physical player that can defend, rebound, and
make that one more pass.
With the acquisition of seven additional
sophomores from across the country, Russell and
assistant coach Kevon Davis have worked hard to
assemble a team of experience and character.
We have a lot of guys who can play multiple
positions and are very selfless about it, says
Russell.
Coming in from Skagit Valley College in Las
Vegas, Nevada, 64 wing, Gerad Davis exited
a very productive summer. Davis was invited to
several junior college showcases, Russell says,
Hes going to be a big part of what we do.
Chris Snyder, 610, from Regis University,
63 guard from New York, Isaiah Lewis, and 64
guard from Salem, Oregon, LJ Westbrook all have
a lot of Division 1 interests. Lewis and Westbrook
both averaged 10 points a game last season.
Youre not crazy if you think Harris Morgan
looks familiar. Coming to Casper College on
the heels of older brother Tanner Morgan, the
611 post is excited for the opportunity to prove
he can produce at a higher level after battling
foot injuries last year. His game is very similar to
big brothers where hes going to do a good job
defending, rebounding, and scoring the ball when
he gets it on the block.

We have a lot of versatility and length

defensively, says Russell. This will help us get
deflections out in the passing lane. Part of that
defensive formula will be found in freshmen
forwards Antwan Bevans, Vincent Franklin, and
Shea Garland. All three are extremely athletic and
very skilled at getting the dirty work done. Expect
to see aggressive defense and a lot of rebounds.
Russell, Davis, and Hurley have high
expectations for the incoming trio of freshmen
guards. Left-handed Chicagoan, Erion Moore,
is highly gifted offensively while Don Jarrett
Jr. (DJ) averaged over 20 points a game at
Kennedy High in Waterbury, Connecticut. Deante
Strickland is a great distributor who defends 94
feet. Explosively quick, Russell anticipates him to
be a bit of a game changer who creates shots for
his teammates. Casper native, Ethan Applegate,
is a high motor guy who can shoot it pretty solid
from 15. He will have a very productive redshirt
year and prove to be a great asset in practice
because he plays hard and doesnt back down.
A lot of things have to go our way, says
Russell. But with a bit of luck, and if we can avoid
the injury bug, I think we have enough depth,
leadership, and maturity to make a run for the
Region IX championship.
