2

Structure (Fig. 2)

GB3906
2 IP4X
IP2X

The switchgear is designed as per the armored metal-enclosed switchgear in GB3906. It is

generally consists of two parts: the cabinet and the centrally-positioned withdrawable part (i.e. the
handcart), as illustrated in Fig. 2. The cabinet is divided into four separate compartments. The
enclosure protection class is IP4X, and the protection class is IP2X when the compartments and the
door of circuit breaker compartment are open. There are overhead incoming and outgoing lines,
cable incoming and outgoing lines and other functional schemes, which are arranged and combined
to get the power distribution units with various scheme forms. The switchgear can be installed,
commissioned and maintained from the front side. Therefore, it can be installed with its back against
another device to form a parallel arrangement, as well as against the wall, which increases its safety
and flexibility and reduces the floor area.
2.1
2.1 Enclosure and others
CNC

The enclosure of switch cabinet is made of imported Al-Zn coated steel sheets with high
resistance to oxidation. It is processed on CNC machine tool and by multi-bending technology, and
then connected by rivet nuts and high-strength bolts. Compared with other equipment cabinets of the
6

same type, it is characterized by high precision, light weight, high mechanical strength and goodlooking appearance.
2.2
2.2 Handcart
CNC

The handcart framework is also made of steel plates, which are CNC processed and then
assembled. The insulation coordination is adopted between the handcart and the cabinet. The
mechanical interlocking is safe, reliable and flexible. According to the purposes, the handcarts are
classified into circuit breaker handcart, voltage transformer handcart, metering handcart and
isolating handcart. The handcarts of different types have some cordwood-type changes according to
their sizes, while the handcarts of the same size can be freely and perfectly interchanged. The
handcart has its isolation position/test position and working position inside the cabinet. Each position
has the positioning device to ensure the reliable interlocking. The operation must follow the
operation procedure of interlocking and misoperation prevention. All handcarts are pushed in pulled
out by screws and nuts, which makes the operation simple and flexible, suitable for the operation by
different types of personnel on duty. When the handcart has to be withdrawn from the cabinet, a
special transfer trolley can be used to take the handcart out easily for various inspections and
maintenances. Since the centrally-positioned arrangement is adopted and the handcart size is mall,
the inspection and maintenance are very convenient.

The vacuum circuit breaker and the pushing mechanism are installed on the circuit breaker
handcart. When the handcart is transported by the transfer trolley into the circuit breaker
compartment, it can be reliably locked in the isolation position/test position; in addition, only after
the completely locking can the pushing mechanism can be rotated to push the handcart to the
working positions. When the handcart is in the working position, the pushing handle can not be
rotated any more. The mechanical interlocking of handcart can reliably ensure that only when the
handcart is in the working position or test position, can the circuit breaker be opened, and only when
the handcart is open, can the circuit breaker be moved.
2.3
2.3 Compartment

IP2X

The main electrical elements inside the switch cabinet have their separate compartments, i.e.
circuit breaker handcart compartment, busbar compartment, cable compartment and relay &
instrument compartment. The protection class of all compartments is IP2X. Except the relay
compartment, the other three compartments are equipped with pressure relief channel. Due to the
adoption of central-positioned arrangement, the cable compartment space is greatly increased and
multiple cables can be connected.
2.3.1 B
2.3.1

Circuit breaker compartment B:

15 /
6 13/

Both sides of the compartment are installed with tracks, which are for the handcart 15 to move
and slide from the isolation position/test position to the working position. The partition door 13
(valve) of fixed contact box 6 is installed at rear wall of handcart compartment. When the handcart
moves from the isolation position/test position to the working position, the valves on the upper and
lower fixed contact boxes interlock with handcart to be automatically opened; when the handcart
moves in the opposite direction, the valves can be automatically closed until the handcart moves
back to a certain position to completely cover the fixed contact boxes, so as to form effective
isolation. Meanwhile, since the upper valve and lower valve are not interlocked, during the
maintenance, the valve at the electrified side can be locked, so as to ensure that the maintenance
personnel will not touch the electrified bodies. When the door of circuit breaker compartment is
closed, the handcart can also be operated. The handcart position inside the isolation compartment,
closing and opening indications and energy storage status can be observed through the observation
window on the upper door.
2.3.2 A

6
3
3
The main busbar 4 is connected by mutual penetration of single splices, see Fig. 6, and it is
fixed by branch busbar 2 and fixed contact boxes. The main busbar and interbus are copper bars with
rectangular sections, and two or three busbars are used for large current load. The branch busbar is
connected to the fixed contact box 6 and main busbar by bolts, and there is no need of other
supports. For special requirements, the busbar can be covered with heat-shrinkable sleeve,
attachment bolt sleeve and end cap. The busbars of two adjacent cabinets are fixed with sleeve 3. If
there is any internal fault arc, the air buffer reserved between the busbars in this connection can
8

prevent the penetration and melting. The sleeve 3 can effectively limit the accident within the
compartment without spreading to other cabinets.
2.3.3 C
2.3.3

Cable isolation compartment C:

1~3
6
The switchgear is of the centrally-positioned arrangement, so the cable compartment space is
relatively large. The current transformer 7 and earthing switch 8 are installed on the rear wall of
compartment, and the lightning arrester 10 is installed on the rear lower part of compartment. After
removing the handcart 15 and withdrawable horizontal clapboard 17, the construction personnel can
enter into the cabinet from the front side for installation and maintenance. The cables in the cable
compartment are connected with the conductors, and each pole can be connected with 1-3 singlecore cables. If necessary, each pole can be connected with 6 single-core cables. The bottom of the
cabinet for tie cables is equipped with removable metal seal plates, which ensures the construction
convenience.
2.3.4 D
2.3.4

Relay & instrument compartment D:

The relay and instrument compartment can be installed with relay protection components,
instruments, live-line inspection indicators, and secondary equipment with particular requirements.
The control circuit is laid in the wire duct with sufficient space, and the metal cover plate is provided
to isolate the secondary lines from the high-voltage compartment. The roof of relay and instrument
compartment is reserved with small busbar threading holes for construction convenience. During
wiring, the top cover plate of instrument compartment can be turned over for the installation of small
busbars.
2.4
2.4 Interlocking device for misoperation prevention

The switch cabinet is equipped with a safety and reliable interlocking device inside it, which
completely satisfies the requirements of Five Preventions.
a KK
a The instrument compartment is equipped with an indicative push button or KK type
changeover switch to prevent the opening and closing of circuit breaker by mistake.
b

b Only when the circuit breaker handcart is in the working position or test position, can the
circuit breaker handcart be closed or opened, and after the closing of circuit breaker, the handcart can
not be moved, so as to prevent the handcart from being pushed and pulled mistakenly with load.
c /
/

c Only when the earthing switch is in the opening position, can the circuit breaker handcart
move from the test/off position to the working position. Only when the circuit breaker handcart is in
the test/off position, can the earthing switch be closed (the earthing switch can be provided with
voltage display device). This can prevent the earthing switch from being closed mistakenly with
electricity, as well as prevent the circuit breaker being closed when the earthing switch is in closed
position.
d
d When the circuit breaker handcart is in the working position, the secondary plug is locked
and can not be pulled out.
e
e

Each cabinet can be equipped with electric interlocks.

The reliability of this switch cabinet can be improved by additionally installing the
electromagnetic locking device on the earthing switch operating mechanism, which can be selected
in accordance with the users demands when placing an order for goods.
2.5
2.5 Pressure relief devices

The top parts of circuit breaker handcart compartment, busbar compartment and cable
compartment are equipped with pressure relief devices. When there is any internal fault arc related to
the circuit breaker or busbar, the internal air pressure of switch cabinet will increase when the arc
appears. The particular sealing ring equipped on the door will seal the front side of cabinet, and the
pressure relief metal plate equipped on the top will be automatically opened to release the pressure
and drain the gas, so as to ensure safety of operators and switchgear.
2.6
2.6

Interlocking of secondary plug and handcart positions

10

The connection between the secondary line of switch cabinet and the secondary line of circuit
breaker handcart are realized by manual secondary plug. The moving contact of secondary plug is
connected with the circuit breaker handcart via a nylon extension tube of bellow type. The secondary
fixed contact socket is installed on the upper right side of handcart compartment of switch cabinet.
Only when the circuit breaker handcart is in the test/off positions, can the secondary plug be inserted
or removed. When the circuit breaker handcar is in the working position, due to the function of
mechanical interlocking, the secondary plug is locked and can not be removed.
2.7
2.7 Live display device

The switch cabinet is equipped with an option for the operation of primary circuit, i.e. the live
display device. The device can not only improve the electrified status of high-voltage circuit, but
also match with the electromagnetic lock to implement the forced locking of handle and cabinet
door, so as to prevent the closing of earthing switch with electricity, prevent entering the electrified
compartment by mistake, and finally improving the misoperation prevention performance of
supporting products.
2.8
2.8 Condensation and corrosion prevention

In order to prevent the dangers related to condensation in environment with high humidity or
relatively large temperature change, the circuit breaker compartment and cable compartment are
respectively equipped with heaters to prevent the corrosion.
2.9
2.9 Earthing device
10x40mm2

The cable compartment is separately provided with earthing copper bar of 10x40mm2, which
runs through the adjacent cabinets and has good contact with cabinets. This earthing bar is used for
direct earthing parts and components. Meanwhile, since the whole cabinet is spliced by zinc plate
coated with aluminum, the whole cabinet is in good earthing status, which can ensures the safety of
operators when touching the cabinet.

Use and Maintenance

4.1

4.1 When the switch cabinet is in operation, operators shall pay attention to the following
matters in addition to observing relevant specifications.
4.1.1
4.1.1

Operation procedures

Although the switch cabinet is designed with interlocks to ensure the correct operation of each
part of the switchgear, operators shall still operate each part of the switchgear in strict accordance
with the requirements of operation specifications and technical documents. Operators shall not
operate the switch cabinet at will; particularly, they shall not perform forced operation without
analysis when operation is interrupted, or else it may cause damage to the switchgear or even
14

accidents.
4.1.1.1
4.1.1.1 Operation of circuit breaker cabinet without earthing switch
a

a Installing the circuit breaker handcart into the cabinet: before pushing the circuit breaker
handcart into the cabinet, carefully check that the breaker is in good condition, all parts are installed,
and no sundries such as tools are left in the mechanism case or the switch. After confirming that
everything is OK, load the handcart onto the transfer trolley and lock the handcart. Push the transfer
trolley to the front of the cabinet, lift the handcart to the appropriate position. After inserting the
positioning locking plate which is in front of the transfer trolley, and locking the trolley with the
cabinet, open the locking plate of the breaker handcart to push the handcart steadily into the cabinet
and lock it with the cabinet. Unlock the transfer trolley and the cabinet after confirming that the
handcart and the cabinet are locked. Push away the transfer trolley.
b

b Operation of the handcart in the cabinet: after the handcart is installed into the cabinet from
the transfer trolley, it is at the off position. If the operator wants to put the handcart into operation,
the operator shall place the handcart at testing position and plug in the secondary circuit plug. If the
handcart is powered on, the testing position indicator on the instrument panel will be on, and at this
time, the operator can conduct electrical operation test on the handcart without connecting the main
circuit. If the operator wants to continue operation, the operator must close all cabinet doors, insert
the keys into the keyholes to lock the doors, and confirm that the breaker is opened (see Clause d).
At this time, the operator can insert the handcart operation crank into the operation hole on the panel,
and shake the crank clockwise until the crank is obviously obstructed and a crisp sound made by the
switchover of the auxiliary switch is heard. Remove the crank when the working position indicator
on the instrument panel is on. At this time, the breaker is at working position, and it can be opened
and closed through the control circuit.
d

If preparing to withdraw the handcart from the working position, the operator shall firstly
confirm that the breaker has been opened (see Clause d), insert the handcart operation crank, and
shake the crank counterclockwise until the crank is obviously obstructed and a crisp sound made by
15

the switchover of the auxiliary switch is heard, and thus, the handcart returns to the testing position.
At this time, the main circuit is completely opened, and the metal valve is closed.
c

c Taking out the handcart from the cabinet: if preparing to take out the handcart from the
cabinet, the operator shall firstly confirm that the handcart has been on the testing position, plug out
the auxiliary contact loop, and padlock the moveable plug on the handcart rack. Then, push the
transfer trolley to the front of the cabinet (the operation procedure is the same as that of installing the
handcart into the cabinet), and unlock and pull out the handcart. When confirming that the handcart
is locked after it is completely loaded into the transfer trolley, unlock the transfer trolley and the
cabinet. Put down and park the transfer trolley gently and steadily after pulling the transfer trolley
backward for a suitable distance. If the handcart is to be transported for a long distance with the
transfer trolley, special care should be taken when the transfer trolley is pushed so as to avoid
accidents during transportation.
d

d Confirming the open and the close states of the breaker in the cabinet: the open and the
close states of the breaker can be determined according to the opening & closing indication boards
on the breaker handcart panel and the opening & closing indicators on the instrument panel.
4.1.1.2
4.1.1.2 Operation of circuit breaker cabinet with earthing switch

The operation procedures of pushing the circuit breaker handcart into the cabinet and taking it
out from the cabinet are the same as those of the circuit breaker without earthing switch. Only the
considerations that should be paid attention to during the operation of the handcart in the cabinet and
the operation of the earthing switch are described as follows:
a
a

Operation of the handcart in the cabinet

4.1.1b

Before pushing the handcart into working position, in addition to observing the requirements in
4.1.1b, the operator shall confirm that the earthing switch is under closing state, or else no further
operation can be carried out.
b
b

Close and open operation of earthing switch

/
16

90
90
For the close operation of the switch, first, make sure that the handcart is at the testing/off
position, remove the propelling crank and press down the interlock bend plate at the handle hole on
the earthing plate. Insert the operation handle of the earthing switch and turn it 90 clockwise, and
thus, the earthing switch is closed. The earthing switch is opened if it is turned 90
counterclockwise.
4.1.1.3
4.1.1.3 Operation of common isolation cabinet

4.1.1.1 d,

The isolation handcart is not capable of connecting and interrupting load current, and
therefore, it is not allowed to push or pull the handcart with load. When operating the isolation
handcart in the cabinet, the operator must open the circuit breaker matched with the handcart (see d
in 4.1.1.1), and after opening the circuit breaker, unlock the electrical interlock of the auxiliary
contact switch of the circuit breaker with the matched isolation handcart. It is at this time that the
isolation handcart can be operated. The specific operation procedures are the same as those of the
circuit breaker handcart.
4.1.2
4.1.2

Precautions for use of interlock

4.1.2.1

4.1.2.1 Interlock of the product is realized mainly by mechanical interlock supplemented with
electrical interlock. In terms of functions, the product can meet the requirements of switch cabinets
for five-prevention locking. However, operators shall not neglect the requirements in the operation
instruction for this reason. Only when the specified systems and technical means are combined can
the prevention functions of the interlocking devices be realized and the accidents caused by
misoperation be avoided.
4.1.2.2

4.1.2.2 The interlocking functions of the product are mostly enabled and disabled during
normal operation, and no additional operation procedures are required. If operation is found to be
interrupted (for example, operation resistance increases), it is required to check whether there is the
possibility of misoperation in the first instead of carrying out forced operation which may cause
damage to the equipment, or event cause misoperation-related accidents.
4.1.2.3

17

4.1.2.3 Emergency unlocking is allowed for some interlocks (such as the interlock of the plates
under the cabinet with the earthing switch) due to special needs. Emergency unlocking must be used
with prudence and should not be used frequently. Protection measures must be taken in the using of
the emergency unlocking. Interlocking must be recovered immediately after treatment.
4.2
4.2 In addition to overhauling the switch cabinet according to requirements of relevant
specifications, users are advised to pay special attention to the following:
4.2.1
4.2.1 Inspect the circuit breaker and make necessary adjustment according to the
requirements in the instructions for installation and use of circuit breaker.
4.2.2
4.2.2 Inspect the propelling mechanism and the interlocking of the handcart to ensure that
they meet relevant requirements in the Instructions.
4.2.3

4.2.3 Inspect the contact of the main circuit to ensure that the contact is not damaged, there is
no obvious change of spring force, and the clad layers are not abnormally oxidized due to high
temperature. If there are any of the above conditions, treatment shall be carried out timely.
4.2.4
4.2.4 Check whether the contact of the auxiliary circuit is normal or not, and if it is abnormal,
necessary adjustment shall be made.
4.2.5

4.2.5 Check each part (such as the earthing contact, main earthing wire, cross-door earthing
wire etc.) of the earthing loop to ensure their conductivity.
4.2.6
4.2.6

Check fasteners of each part. The loosened fasteners shall be fastened in time.

5
5

Transportation and Storage

The following precautions shall be noticed during transportation and storage of the switch
cabinets:
a
