Executive Summary
Mobility Challenge Question
How might we design a better way for Kevin to commute independently while making his parents feel
reassured ?

Goals: To allow for more children in Kevins situation to safely explore the world on their bikes
independently without having to continually rely on their parents.

Objective: To design a feasible mobility solution (Smart Helmet) for Kevin that incorporates his
independence as well as attending to his parents safety concerns.

Why Will It Be Successful ?

Augmenting technology into an existing solution: Historically, helmets have been used
for safety. We are making them smarter.

Cheap to manufacture: Use of existing technologies integrated into helmet makes it cheaper to
manufacture.

There is a need for safety: Current bicycle helmets only minimize the damage to the user. Our
helmet seeks to also prevent an impending accident/crash, while adding other features that make riding
easier for the user.

PROBLEM
Persona Kevin

12 years old
Loves biking
Wants to meet his friends
Parents are busy
Parents worry about Kevins safety
Kevin wants to be independent

Issues to be addressed

Safety while biking

Parents to be notified of Kevins location
Ability for Kevin to communicate with them
Ability for Kevin to meet friends easily

PROJECT
DESIGN

CONCEPT

An economical smart helmet enabled with GPS and data, essentially

integrating a smartphone functionality into a helmet with features like
proximity sensors that notify the users of traffic in blind spots and lights to
be used at night.
It networks with other helmet users, and makes it easy to find friends by
voice guided directions.
A dockable remote module which can be clamped on to the handle or the
wrist helps control the indicator lights.
Service to track location of user

Headlights : equipped with light sensors
that automatically turn on sensing low
ambient light, ensuring visibility.

Energy module :
Rechargeable battery pack embedded
into helmets exoskeleton

Smart-phone-like Features :
Internet connection via embedded GSM & GPS
module that enables voice activated calling,
messaging, reading texts, and getting directions

Remote control :

Detachable module that can be clipped on

to handlebars or secured onto wrist to
control indicator lights.
The module can be docked inside the
helmet for charging and portability.
Controls on the remote : left and right
indicators and SOS button that can be
configured to alert emergency contacts or

EXPECTED OUTCOMES

10

1. Increased visibility of and for the cyclists

The front headlight and proximity sensors help increase/extend the cyclists sensitivity/
cognizance of his immediate environment
Tail light and Indicator lights increase the cyclists visibility on the road making them clearly
discernible to other vehicles/traffic

2. Minimize risk of accidents

Remote on the bike handlebar for indicator light controls - eliminating the need for hand
signals
Proximity sensors on the helmet warns the user of nearby traffic. Sensors are placed
strategically to cover blindspots

3. Improved safety through hands-free control

Microphone and speakers in the helmet enables reading out texts, answer calls, make
calls, get directions, get notified of friends nearby all functions are voice controlled

4. Increased independence for children and safety reassurance for parents

Parents can track the location of their children using an app or the website
Parents can call their children anytime

Short Term :

Reduce risk of bicycle related injuries

Promotion of sociable outdoor biking activities

Long Term :

Set the future trend for the integration of a smart transportation ecosystem
Reduction of overall fuel emissions (people drive less)
Set the trend for younger children and teenagers to travel independently and
mature earlier as they explore more of the world on their own

Absolute Sales & Sales Growth

Number of Sales made each month & the growth of sales from one month to the
next

Market Penetration Rate

Percentage of total bikers who buy the helmet

Product Satisfaction (Quantitative & Qualitative)

Quantitative: Review score ratings on distribution websites such as Amazon
(score out of 5 stars)
Qualitative: Written user feedback and suggestions

Lesser Number of Bicycle Crashes or Accidents

The number of total crashes/accidents in a year (measuring that it is less than the
average when wearing just a regular helmet)
