PEYOTE STITCH / TWISTED

TUBULAR HERRINGBONE

Tortiglioni
necklace
Make a statement with a necklace of
delectable shapes and bold colors
designed by Jane Lock

These short, spiraling ribbed tubes bear a striking

resemblance to tortiglioni pasta. Stitch up a few
handfuls in even-count peyote or tubular
herringbone, then simply string them
interspersed with fringe drops for a
necklace that plays up the natural
shape of the stitch.

Blue necklace
You can stitch the tubes using evencount peyote stitch or twisted tubular
herringbone. Either way, the result is
a twisting, ribbed tube, perfect for this
eye-catching necklace. Rather than
rethreading the needle for each tube,
use one comfortable length of thread
until you run out.
Peyote tubes

[1] On a comfortable length of thread,

pick up eight 80 seed beads, leaving a
5-in. (13 cm) tail. These beads will make
up the first two rows of peyote stitch.
[2] Pick up an 80, skip the last 80,
and sew back through the previous 80.
Continue working in even-count peyote
(Online Basics) until the beadwork is
eight rows long (photo a).
[3] Zip up (Online Basics) the beads
to form a tube. Sew back through a
diagonal column of beads (photo b),
keeping the tension tight, and pulling
the beads into alignment. Turn, and sew
through an adjacent diagonal column.
Repeat until all the columns have been
pulled into alignment. End the working
thread and tail (Online Basics).
[4] Repeat steps 13 to make a total
of 46 tubes.
Herringbone tubes

[1] On a comfortable length of thread,

pick up two 80 seed beads, leaving a
5-in. (13 cm) tail. Sew through both
beads again (figure 1, ab).
[2] Pick up an 80, and sew through
the previous 80 and the new 80 again.
Repeat (bc).
[3] Sew through the first 80, the last 80,
and the first 80 again, to form the ladder
into a ring (cd). The working thread
should be exiting up from the first 80.
[4] Pick up two 80s, and sew down
through the next 80 in the first round

(figure 2, ab). Sew up through the

following 80, pick up two 80s, and

sew down through the next 80, and up
through the first 80. Step up through
the first 80 added in this round (bc).
[5] Pick up two 80s, and sew down
through the next 80. Sew up through
the top two 80s in the next stack
(figure 3, ab). Pick up two 80s, sew
down through the next 80, and sew
up through the top three 80s in the
next stack to step up and start the
next round (bc).
[6] Continue working in twisted tubular
herringbone, as in step 5, until the tube
is eight rounds tall. Weave through the
beads of the final round using a ladder
stitch (Online Basics) thread path to pull
the beads into position. End the working
thread and tail.
[7] Repeat steps 16 to make a total
of 46 tubes.

Editors Note: Using

smaller beads, like 110s, gives

this necklace a daintier feel,
but its difficult to get the
segments to hang neatly on
the same side. Rather than
fight the natural shape that
the combination of teardrops
and tubes creates, enjoy the
spiky look, which still makes
the most of the twisted tube
shapes. Lesley

Assembly

[1] Cut a 24-in. (61 cm) piece of

beading wire. String a crimp bead
and half of the clasp, go back through
the crimp bead, and crimp the crimp
bead (Online Basics).
[2] String three tubes and a fringe drop
(photo c). String a tube perpendicular
to the beading wire, passing the wire
between the first and second rounds
of beads (photo d).
[3] Continue stringing an alternating
pattern of a fringe drop and a perpendicularly strung tube until you have
three tubes left. String a fringe drop
and three tubes to mirror the other
end of the necklace (photo e).

[4] String a crimp bead and the other

half of the clasp. Go back through the
crimp bead. Curve the necklace and
align the beads, then crimp the crimp
bead. If you dont curve the necklace
before crimping, it wont drape well.
Trim the wire tails.

Purple necklace
Follow the instructions for the blue
necklace, but substitute 110 seed beads
for the 80s. Because the tubes are smaller,
youll need to make 50 for a 16-in.
(41 cm) necklace. Instead of stringing
three tubes over the wire at each end
of the necklace, string five tubes. w
