QUALITY ASSURANCE

Provide control of excessive noise and vibration in the buildings due to


the operation of machinery or equipment, and/or due to interconnected
piping, ductwork or conduit. Installation of vibration isolation units, and
associated hangers and bases, under the direct supervision of the
vibration isolation manufacturer's representative.

All vibration isolators shall have either known undeflected heights


or calibration markings so that, after adjustment, when carrying
their load, the deflection under load can be verified, thus
determining that the load is within the proper range of the device
and that the correct degree of vibration isolation is being provided
according to the design.

All isolators shall operate in the liner portion of their load versus
deflection curve. Furnish load versus deflection curves linear over
a deflection range of not less than 50% above the design
deflection.

The Contractor shall however be responsible for and ensure that all
penetration in walls, floors and ceilings provided for pipes, ducts,
conduits, etc. are isolated and sealed around the penetrations.

In all cases, masonry and other structure surrounding the plant shall not
be in direct contact with equipment.

Environmental vibration levels criteria shall be subjectively virtually


imperceptible with respect to feelable vibration, for the majority of people,
and shall at the same time, not allow re-radiated structure borne noise
levels from the vibrations to exceed approximately NR 35 to minimize
contribution to airborne noise the audible region.

Building and Building Elements Vibration Limits :


minus 60 dB re 1G from 2 Hz to 10 Hz, and
minus 55 dB re 1G from 10 Hz to 31.5 Hz.

Vibration limits for mechanical equipment are also stipulated as follows:-

ANTI VIBRATION EQUIPMENT/TECHNIQUES

Equipment

The following summarizes the type and nature of the noise and vibration
control techniques and equipment to be used in the isolation of
mechanical and electrical equipment as describe in this specification.

STEEL SPRING IN SERIES WITH NEOPRENE PADS


.1

Spring type isolator shall either be unhoused or restrained free-standing


laterally stable with levelling bolts rigidly bolted to inertia blocks /
baseframes appropriate for the vibration isolation of the mechanical and
electrical equipment.

In general, spring diameter shall be comparable with compressed height


and shall not be less than 0.8 of compressed height at rated load and
horizontal spring stiffness shall be approximately equal to vertical
stiffness.

Spring shall have a minimum additional travel to solid, equal to 50% of


rated deflection, and in this condition, shall not exceed elastic limit of
spring.

All spring shall be mounted with adequate clearance from brackets and
shall be clearly in view for critical inspection.

.5

Where restrained mounts are used, a housing shall be provided that


include vertical limit stops.

.6

A minimum clearance of 10mm shall be maintained around the restraining


bolts and between the housing and spring so as not to interfere with
spring action.

Limit stops shall be out of contact during normal operations. Mounts used
outdoors shall be hot dipped galvanized.

.8

All steel springs shall be installed in series with two layers of neoprene
ribbed or waffle pattern pads (min. 8mm thickness) as described below.

All springs, hangers and associated components located outdoors or


where specified shall be hot dipped galvanized by the original
manufacturer.

The springs shall be selected to support the calculated loads with the
minimum spring deflections specified without being compressed solid,
bridge out, or exceeding the Manufacturers maximum rated loads under
any operating condition.

In the selection of the springs, the Contractor shall also take into account
the weight distribution of the equipment under normal operating
conditions, weight of unsupported pipes / ducts, and any large dynamic
forces due to fluid movement, torque reaction and starting / stopping.

The Contractor shall provide details of the make and model number of the
isolators selected and their individual calculated loads.

INERTIA BLOCKS AND PLINTHS


.1

Inertia blocks shall be installed where specified the mechanical equipment


shall be bolted directly on to the integral concrete inertia blocks.

.2

All concrete referred to in this specification should have a density of a


least 2240 - 2400 kg/cu.m. (140 - 150 lb/cu.ft).

.3

In general, the length and width of the inertia block should be greater than
the length and width of the supported equipment.

.4

The weight of the inertia bloc, generally determined by thickness, shall


have a weight ratio of 1:1 with the total equipment weight, including piping
and process fluid weight.

.5

The base shall consist of a concrete slab cast into a welded steel base
frame assembly.

.6

Frames shall be welded steel channels, of minimum 150mm (6)


thickness or the same thickness as the Inertia Block and shall be
reinforced with welded-in 12 mm (1/2) steel reinforcing rods or angles at
150mm (6) centres each way.

Anchor bolts shall be fixed into position, and housed in steel bolt sleeves
to allow minor bolt location adjustments or alternatively, pockets shall be
cast into inertia block to permit the later insertion of anchor bolts.

A suitable base former of minimum 10mm plywood or equivalent shall be


included for forming the slab.

.9

Steel channel isolator brackets shall be welded directly to channel frames,


and suitably located to accommodate the height of the deflected springs
and inertia block clearance with plinth.

There shall be adequate clearance (minimum 20mm) all round the spring
to assure that there is no contact between any spring and any part of the
mounted assembly for any possible alignment or position of the installed
inertia block. The clearance between inertia block and floor/plinth shall be
at least 75mm (3).

At location of mechanical equipment, a foundation concrete plinth of


minimum thickness 100mm (or more as appropriate) shall be provided.

RIBBED OR WAFFLE PATTERN NEOPRENE PADS


.1

Ribbed or waffle patter pads shall be 8mm (5/16) - 9.5mm (3/8) thick 40
durometer as normally supplied by the manufacturers.

.2

For typical applications, neoprene pads should be located to a surface


weight of approximately 35,000 kg/sq.m. (7150 lb/sq.ft).

.3

Where two or more layers of neoprene pads are used, individual layers
shall be separated by 1mm (20 G) thick steel shims.

RESILIENT HANGERS
.1

Resilient hangers are to be used for resilient suspension of pipes and


ducts al all indoor installations.

.2

For deflections in excess of 25mm, spring in series with neoprene type


shall be used, and for deflections less than 25mm neoprene in shear type
hangers shall be used.

.3

During installation, inspection shall be made to ensure that no hangers


are compressed solid or bridged out, and that the stipulated minimum
deflection are achieved.

.4

All units mounted outdoors, or where specified, shall be hot dipped


galvanized by the manufacturer.

NEOPRENE IN SHEAR
.1

Neoprene-in-shear isolators shall be of the double deflection type. The


isolators shall incorporate cast-in tapped steel load plates to permit direct
bolting to supported equipment.

Cast-in drilled baseplates shall also be incorporated for direct mounting to


plinths.

.3

The isolators shall be selected to achieve the minimum deflection


specified, without exceeding the manufacturers published maximum
permissible loadings.

PUMPS
.1

All pumps shall be selected for the highest efficiently consistent with the
specified duty and no more than 0.9 times the maximum pump impeller
diameter capability of the pump housing to reduce the possibility of tonal
effects.

Pumps impellers, shafts, and drive couplings shall statically and


dynamically balanced to (International Standard Organization) ISO
Balance Quality Grade 4.3 or lower, and vibration amplitudes shall not
exceed 0.02mm peak to peak displacement at operating speed when
measured on the machine structure, with the pumps/motors mounted on
these inertia blocks.

The pump and motor assembly shall be mounted on a concrete filled


inertia block and completely vibration isolated.

.4

Pumps inertia blocks shall be sized to support the weight of elbows,


valves and other fittings without creating undue stress on the pump
assembly.

.5

The minimum total static deflection of vibration for pumps installed on


elevated slabs or floors shall be 50mm, and on lowest basement floor or
grade shall be 25mm.

AIR HANDLING UNITS, PRIMARY AIR UNITS & VENTILATION FANS


.1

All air handling units and primary air units shall be mounted or hung on
steel spring isolators in series with neoprene pads.

.2

All fans and rotating assemblies of air handling units, primary air units,
shall have complete assemblies including drive components statically and
dynamically balanced to ISO 1940 Balance Quality Grade 6.3 or lower.

.3

All rotating assemblies and fans, except for single plane disk elements or
propeller fans, shall be dynamically balanced on minimum two planes.

.4

The Contractor shall not select nor use air handling units that operate in
excess of 1500 rpm.

.5

Vibration levels of blower/fan/impeller assemblies in all ventilation, air


handling and primary units measured on bearing caps of the built up units
on site at full operational speed and local conditions shall not exceed
6mm/s RMS in radial direction, and 4mm/s RMS in axial direction.

The Contractor shall at the Contractors own cost ensure that such
vibration levels are complied with.

In-factory testing of all Air Handling Units, fans and all rotating assemblies
for compliance to manufacturers quality control vibration levels are
required. All Air Handling Units shall have such manufacturers test
validation data of measured vibration levels, and supplied with the Air
Handling Units during delivery.

The minimum total static deflection of vibration isolators for all fans and
AHUs shall be as follows :Operating Speeds

All connections between Air handling Units/Fans and ductwork shall be


properly aligned and executed using flexible material (e.g. lead
impregnated PVC or equivalent).

If flexible material is used, it shall have a minimum surface density of 5


kg/sq.m. (1 lb/sq.ft.) and minimum STC 22.

As part of this Contract, the Contractor shall supply Sound Power Levels
(re 10 - 12 watts) of all fans and AHUs offered.

.11

Noise data must be Sound Power Levels, and not Sound Pressure Level.
Sound Power Levels must be specified in octave bands center
frequencies for 63 Hz minimum to 40000 Hz.

.12

AHUs/fans shall be selected such that the Sound Power Levels of the
AHUs/fans shall result in noise levels at occupied or public spaces to be
in compliance with the noise rating required of the space as stipulated in
the Design Objectives.

.13

Where required, in-duct sound attenuators and internal acoustical lining in


ductworks shall be used for duct borne sound attenuation of the
AHUs/fans to achieve the stipulated noise criteria limits.

.14

Ventilation fans and air handling units where fitted with sound attenuators
(on both upstream and downstream sides of the units with respect to
occupied areas) shall have performance values (dynamic insertion losses,
air quantities, frictional losses) governed by fan selections, duct layouts
and acoustic design criteria for the space.

.15

The Contractor shall submit all details and selection of sound attenuators.

.16

Where sound attenuators are not used, all ducts upstream and
downstream of AHUs and fans shall be internally lined with fibreglass or
rockwool for sound attenuation as required.

FAN COIL UNITS


.1

All fan coil units over 1.5 Hp motor size shall be vibration isolated with
double deflection neoprene in shear isolators, or steel spring vibration
isolator, hangers/supports of minimum 10mm total static deflection.

.2

All fan coil units under 1.5 Hp motor size shall be isolated with two layers
of 8mm thick 40mm durometer neoprene or rubber pads in between
mounting or suspension brackets.

.3

All piping serving fan coil units shall be isolated by rubber sleeves where
suspended or attached to any building structure or fixtures.

.4

There shall be no solid connection between fan coil units and the
structure. Discharge ducts shall be fitted with flexible connections.

PIPING
.1

Hangers / supports from all Mechanical equipment within plantrooms and


all piping installed adjacent or over occupied interior spaces shall be
spring isolator in series with neoprene types to similar selection and static
deflection as the mechanical equipment.

All other supports / hangers beyond 100 diameter of pipe length shall
incorporate an isolation medium of 8mm thickness such as waffle pattern
neoprene, felt or high density fibreglass between pipe and hanger /
support or between hanger/support and wall. This applies to all piping
installed whether in horizontal runs or vertical pipe risers.
All pipe penetrations through wall, floors and ceiling shall be isolated from
direct contact with the structure, with a fibreglass isolated sleeve caulked
with a non-setting resilient compound on both sides of the penetration.

All pipeworks installed in spaces with a design noise criteria of NC 40 or


less shall be isolated at the mounting clamp with minimum one layer 6mm
thick ribbed neoprene pad or equivalent.

3.0

EXECUTION

3.1

GENERAL
.1

Install in accordance with manufacturers written instructions. Vibration


isolators must not cause any change of position of equipment or piping
resulting in piping stresses or mis-alignment.

.2

Isolate mechanical equipment from the building structure by means of


noise and vibration isolators as scheduled.

Piping and ductwork to be isolated must pass freely through walls and
floors without rigid connections. Maintain 20mm to 32mm clearance
around outside surfaces of piping or ductwork at penetration points. Pack
this clearance space tightly with firestopping material, after installation of
piping or ductwork.

Make no rigid connections between equipment and building structure that


degrades the noise and vibration isolation system specified herein.

.5

Loop electrical circuit connections to isolated equipment to allow free


motion.

.6

Prior to installation, bring to notice any conflict with other Divisions of this
specification which will result in unavoidable rigid contact with equipment
or piping as described herein, due to inadequate space or other
unforeseen conditions.

.7

Support vertical piping loads, including water strainers, and valves


between pump base elbow supports and the suction and discharge
header piping by means of the pump base spring isolators without stress
or strain to the pump housing.

EQUIPMENT ISOLATORS
.1

Mount vibration isolating devices and related inertia blocks on the


concrete plinths.

.2

Support each pump and motor assembly on a single structural steel


frame.

.3

Provide brackets to accommodate the isolator. Manufacturer to specify


the vertical position and size of the bracket.

.4

Maintain a minimum operating clearance between the equipment frame


on a rigid steel base frame and the housekeeping pad of 25mm. Maintain
a minimum operating clearance between concrete inertia and base and
housekeeping pad or floor of 50mm.

.5

Temporarily support the structural steel or concrete inertia base with


blocks or shims, as appropriate, prior to the installation of the machine or
isolators.

.6

Install the isolators without raising the machine and frame assembly.

.7

Adjust the isolator after the entire installation is complete and under full
operational load so that the load is transferred from the blocks to the
isolator. When all isolators are properly adjusted, the blocks or shims will
be barely free and shall be removed.

Verify that all insulated isolator and mounting systems permit equipment
motion in all directional. Adjust or provide additional resilient restraints to
flexible limit equipment start-up lateral motion to 15mm.

Prior to start-up, clean out all foreign matter between bases and
equipment. Verify that there are no isolations short circuits in the base or
isolators.

PIPING ISOLATORS
.1

Install isolators with isolator hanger box attached to, or hung as close as
possible to, the structure.

.2

Suspend isolators from the structural slab.

.3

Align hanger rods to clear the hanger box.

.4

Utilise resilient pipe anchors, where required to avoid direct contact of


piping with building.

.5

Position all isolators close to building structure.

INSPECTION
.1

In completion of installation of all vibration isolation devices specified


herein, the local representative of the isolation materials manufacturer is
to inspect the completed system and to submit a report indicating the
adequacy of the installation and listing any corrective action if required.
