Chapter 1
Introduction
There are reasons why it is difficult for students to communicate
using the English language.
English is the universal language and every nation regarding
their physical, geographical and cultural differences must accept
the notion that they need the English language to communicate
with one another. According to the Oxford Dictionary of Current
English (Moore, 1997), communication is defined as, The activity
or process of expressing ideas and feelings or of giving people
information.
The significance of communication can be found within the
context of a human existing as a social being. As a human being,

The information gathered from this research will be beneficial
for the school administrators since the results of the study may
give good response with the factors affecting communicative
difficulties in using the English language as a medium of
expression. The teachers will also have further knowledge on the
factors and reasons why the students cannot communicate and
express their ideas in English. This study will also help students to
become aware and see the importance of being able to use the

REVIEW OF RELATED LITERATURE AND STUDIES

If you know the feeling of rage turning into tears that do not
fall, you can guess how I felt when one of my students answered
boys upon being asked what the verb was in the sentence The
boys go to school every day.
To say that our students knowledge of the English language
has deteriorated is a gross understatement. The first, and the
most crucial, reason for their bad English is their negative attitude
today toward the language.

Malpractice
If there is lack of practice, there is also malpractice. News reports
tell us of errors in textbooks, especially those to be used in K-12
(Kindergarten to Grade 12). The errors can be corrected, but what
is beyond our control is the students choice of reading materials
when they are on their own. It may surprise and worry you that the
trending books are not those with superb literary value, written by
William Shakespeare, Edgar Allan Poe and other literary giants.
Inside the books that our students are reading these days are
comma-spliced and run-on phrases, instances of incorrect subject[Type text]

Performance tests like role plays, skit and other activities are being
conducted to gauge the students ability in using the English
language. But during class discussion, the class remains silent and
most of them are not raising their hands when a certain question
is being asked by the teacher. Some are shy, some are afraid of
speaking with wrong grammar and most of them are requesting if
they can say their answer in Filipino or Taglish. The teacher needs
to make a lot of adjustment or the teacher may use other
strategies to help the students in their problem of English
speaking.
It used to be that the Philippines biggest competitive
advantage in the global job market is the proficiency of our skilled
workers in the English language. This advantage, however, is fast
being eroded by rising competition from other countries coupled
with declining mastery of the English language by our college
graduates. Recent language test results released by the IDP
