MODULE SUMMARY
Module outline and aims
The Spanish for Media (beginners) module forms part of the Journalism BA and Social Sciences
degrees. It can either be a core element (as in the Journalism part 1s) or an elective in all the
parts
To develop basic language skills in the target language and an understanding of the media
culture of the country.

Presentation/spelling and pronunciation
Informal greetings/family, identifying people
Nationalities and countries
Visit of a town/asking for directions
Shopping
Talking about personal and others' possessions
WHAT WILL I BE EXPECTED TO ACHIEVE?
On successful completion of this module, you will be expected to be able to:
Knowledge and understanding:
Use of basic grammatical theories and a developing vocabulary.
Understand different meanings of items given in monolingual and bilingual dictionaries
Understand the media culture of the target country in the target language.
Skills:
Use language creatively at a basic level for a range of purposes and audiences.
Work autonomously
Learn how to make contact with foreign language speaking people both inside and outside the
University
Summarise written or spoken material in simple written form (e.g. by making notes in the
foreign language)
Engage with an interpret layers of meaning within texts and other cultural products

Work in groups, exchanging ideas and opinions


Extract and synthesise information from written and spoken sources.
Write and think under pressure and meet deadlines
Assess simple, general information from short and authentic written sources independently
(e.g. magazine/newspaper articles)
Engage in analytical and evaluative thinking.

Assessment criteria
Assessment Criteria are descriptions of the skills, knowledge or attributes students need to
demonstrate in order to complete an assessment successfully and Grade-Related Criteria are
descriptions of the skills, knowledge or attributes students need to demonstrate to achieve a
certain grade or mark in an assessment. Assessment Criteria and Grade-Related Criteria for
module assessments will be made available to students prior to an assessment taking place.

Feedback on assessment
Following an assessment, students will be given their marks and feedback in line with the
Assessment Regulations and Policy. More information on the timing and type of feedback that
will be provided for each assessment will be available from the module leader.
Assessment Regulations
The Pass mark for the module is 40%. Any minimum qualifying marks for specific assessments
are listed in the table above. Please note that there is an aggregated minimum qualifying mark of
40% for the four exam components, but no individual qualifying mark. The weighting of the
different components can also be found above. The Programme Specification contains
information on what happens if you fail an assessment component or the module.
