Treatment
Product
The product is a 5-minute short film entitled Incognito, and is part of the
thriller and superhero genre, making this production a cross-genre or a hybrid.
In a realistic scenario, the most important factor of determining the success of
the short film is through efficiently marketing the film across multiple platforms
that are available to the distribution company. Based on budget, the options
can vary from television spots, billboards, posters and even the cheaper
alternatives such as YouTube trailers, posting images onto Twitter and
Facebook, and posting updates through these platforms of social media.
Genre
The genre of my film is a superhero-thriller, which is a cross-genre. Most
generic traits of these genres feature a fearless male protagonist who isnt
afraid to take on challenges that may arise, however my film will allow the
audience to see a much different personality from my main protagonist, as
well as a representation which is very countertypical of the genre. In order for
the audience to identify the genre of this short film, I will need to incorporate
generic codes and conventions from both the thriller genre and the action
genre so audiences can identify the genre that this production falls into.
Target Audience
Incognito falls into the target audience of 15-40. I had chosen this target
audience as this film deals with more mature and sensitive scenarios, and
includes some elements of violence, indicating this this film is better suited for
audiences who are more mature and tolerant to such features in films.
Although other superhero-thrillers like The Dark Knight had a certification of
12A, I feel that this film includes much more violence and sensitive issues
which only older audience should be open to viewing and understanding.
Media Language
My production has a fair amount of dialogue in one scene, however there will
be scenes where the cinematography will be telling the story, through the use
of close-ups to convey facial expressions, and mise-en-scene to represent
character and locations through their visual appearance. I will need to take
attention to these, as my film needs to have the feel of a darker production,
which is gritty and should feel like an adult film. Sound design will also be
needed, with extra attention being needed to ensure that dialogue is clear,
and sound effects which are realistic to the production.
Representation
The main representation I will be focusing on is my main protagonist John
Staples. His surname is Staples, which could be used as a torture weapon if
put to brutal use, however his insecurities and depressive state of mind make
him the unconventional protagonist for the superhero-thriller I am creating.
The audience will learn about his persona through mise-en-scene, sound,
editing and cinematogtraphy, which will highlight his mood through
components such as facial expressions, colours and sympathetic
soundtracks.
