Transcript
571,230.000 pounds of paper towels are used by Americans every year. If we could...
correction, wrong figure, 13 billion used every year , we could reduce the usage of
paper towels, 1 paper towel per person per day, 571,230.000 pounds of paper not
used. We could do that! Now, there are all kinds of paper towel dispensers. There's
the tri-fold, people typically take two or three, there's the one that cuts it, that you
have to tear off, people go: one, two, three, four, tear. This much, right? There's the
one that cuts itself, people go: one, two, three, four, or there's the same thing but with
recycled paper, you have to get five of those, because they're not as absorbent of
course! The fact is, you can do it all with one towel. The key: two words... This half of
the room, your word is shake, let's hear it... shake /audience/, louder! shake
/audience/. Your word (the speaker turns around to the other half of the room) is
fold . fold /audience/...again, really loud... fold /audience/. Okay, wet hands,
shake, one, two, three, four, five, six, seven, eight, nine, ten, eleven, twelve! Why
twelve? Twelve apostles, twelve tribes, twelve zodiac signs, twelve months, and what
I like the best, it's the biggest number with one syllable. hahahahahaha /audience/,
tri-fold! . fold, dry. shake, fold! Cuts itself, fold.

The fold is important because it allows interstitial suspension, you don't have to
remember that part, but trust me. shake, fold! cuts itself. You know, the funny
thing is, I get my hands dryer than most people do with three or four because they
can't get in between the cracks. If you think this (recycled paper) isn't as
good...shake, fold!
Now, there's no real fancy invention, it's the one where you wave your hands and it
kicks it out, it's way too big-a-towel. Let me tell you a secret, if you're really quick, if
you're really quick, and I can prove this, this is half-a-towel from the dispenser in this
building. How? As soon as it starts, you just tear it off. It is smart enough to stop and
you get half-a-towel. shake, fold! Now, let's say it together: Shake, fold! You will
for the rest of your life remember those words every time you pick up a paper towel
and remember, one towel per person, for one year: 571,230.000 pounds of paper, no
small thing! And next year...toilet paper!

114.246,00 kilogramov papirnatih brisa porabijo ameriani vsako leto. e bi lahko...
popravek, napana tevilka, 5,9 bilijona kilogramov papirnatih brisa porabijo vsako
leto. e bi lahko zmanjali to porabo na zgolj eno brisako na osebo na dan, bi
114.246,00 kilogramov papirja ostalo neporabljenega. Lahko nam uspe! Na voljo
imamo ve vrst papirnatih brisa ter avtomatov za papirnate brisake. Tukaj imamo
zloenke, ljudje obiajno vzamejo dve ali tri, tale avtomat brisae odree, mi pa jih
nato odtrgamo, ljudje obiajno odvrtijo tiri brisae. Toliko, ne? Tale avtomat jih v
celoti odree, ljudje si navadno odvrtijo tiri brisake, tule pa imamo isti princip
avtomata, le da tale vsebuje recikliran papir, takih brisak seveda potrebujemo vsaj
pet, ker niso tako vpojne. Dejstvo je, da si lahko roke obriemo z eno samo brisako.
Kljuni sta dve besedi...beseda te polovice dvorane je stresi!, no da vas sliim
stresi! /publika/, bolj glasno! Vaa (se obrne proti drugi polovici dvorane) beseda
pa je prepogni!... prepogni! /publika/... e enkrat, bolj glasno!... prepogni!
/publika/.

Torej, imam mokre roke, jih otresem... ena, dve, tri, tiri, pet, est, sedem, osem,
devet, deset, enajst, dvanajst! Zakaj dvanajst? Dvanajst apostolov, dvanajst plemen,
dvanajst nebesnih znamenj, dvanajst mesecev, in meni najljubi podatek, najvija
enozlona tevka!

hahahahahaha /publika/. Zloenka,...suhe roke! stresi!,

prepogni! /publika/.
gibanja, taken vam odree bistveno preveliko brisako. Naj vam zaupam/povem
skrivnost, e ste zelo hitri, e ste zelo hitri jo lahko zmanjate, in to vam lahko tudi
dokaem. Tole je pol brisake iz avtomata s te stavbe. Kako? Takoj, ko se brisaa
zane odvijati jo odtrgajte. Avtomat je dovolj pameten, da se ustavi sam, in tako
dobite pol brisake! Recimo vsi skupaj: stresi!, prepogni! Do konca ivljenja se
boste spomnili the dveh besed vsaki ko boste poprijeli papirnato brisako.
Zapomnite si: ena brisaa na osebo nanese v enem letu 114.246,00 kilogramov
prihranjenega papirja. Drugo leto pa govor o toaletnem papirju!
Commentary
During the translation process itself we encountered no specific difficulties. Writing
the transcript was at some points tricky, due to the accent the speaker had and his
pronunciation was at times slurred. We overcame that issue with slowed audio tracks
of the video clip itself. We believe that our Slovene translation is already a form of
adapted text, instead of a mere word by word translation, because the speaker uses
some very expressive terms and expressions that do not have a literal equivalent in
Slovene. The most difficult Slovene equivalent we struggled with was the term
dispenser, which is by the definition in the English dictionary a noun with two
definitions: 1. a person or thing that dispenses. 2. a container, package, device, or
vending machine for holding and dispensing something in small amounts, as facial
tissue, paper cups, or candy.

It implies that it is used to disperse some type of tissue or other things but there is no
such specific term in Slovene, for which we use avtomat, which is by definition found
in SSKJ tehnina naprava, stroj, ki opravlja delo brez lovekovega sodelovanja /a
technical device, a machine, that operates with no human interference/. The definition
at first does not imply any kind of correlation between paper towels and the term
avtomat, which is why we defined it by stating avtomat za papirnate brisae, and
therefore specified the automated action that takes place with no human interference .
The only other alternative to that translation was podajalnik za papirnate brisae. We
found the term unappealing and less known.
