HAYNES HOUSE SEEKS VOLUNTEERS: The Haynes House of Hope in Granville has been
exceptionally busy this year, having welcomed 15 residents so far since January. Haynes House
provides, at no cost, care for the terminally ill and their families in a home-like setting. The need for
Haynes Houses services in the local region is great. Currently there is a waiting list for prospective residents. With more volunteers, said Executive Director Carol Finke, the house will be
able to maintain its round-the-clock care and serve more people. The benefits are immeasurable,
said Finke. Volunteers help to give a quality of life at the end of life, whether taking walks with a
resident, hearing their stories, or just making them feel accepted for where they are in their life.
Those interested in volunteering for Haynes House do not need any special experience. On-the-job
training is provided by experienced staff and volunteers, and new volunteers will shadow a longtime volunteer before working on their own. A usual volunteer shift is 4 hours. All volunteers have
24/7 support from the executive director. In addition to serving the Granville area, the Haynes
House of Hope accepts patients from a 50-mile radius, including all of Washington County and
southern Warren County, and Vermont from as far south as Bennington up to Rutland. Medical
care is provided by High Peaks Hospice of Warren County. Patients must meet specific criteria.
Priority is given to people who have the most significant needs and who have the least options.Haynes
House is located at 7187 State Route 149 in Granville, New York.To learn about volunteering at
the Haynes House of Hope or to schedule a visit, contact Executive Director Carol Finke at 518642-8155.

Claire S. Albrecht of Greenwich has been selected for membership into Beta Beta Beta, the
national biological honorary society, at St. Lawrence University in Canton, New York.
Albrecht is a member of the Class of 2018. Albrecht graduated from Greenwich Jr-Sr High
School.
To be eligible for membership, students must have an overall grade-point average (GPA) of
at least 3.25, have completed four biology courses and have earned a 3.5 GPA in those
courses. The biology major is one of the most popular programs at St. Lawrence.
About St. Lawrence University:
Founded in 1856, St. Lawrence University is a private, independent liberal arts institution of
about 2,500 students located in Canton, New York. The educational opportunities at St.
Lawrence inspire students and prepare them to be critical and creative thinkers, to find a
compass for their lives and careers, and to pursue knowledge and understanding for the
benefit of themselves, humanity and the planet. Through its focus on active engagement with
ideas in and beyond the classroom, a St. Lawrence education leads students to make connections that transform lives and communities, from the local to the global. Visit www.stlawu.edu.
The Olde Saratoga Seniors next meeting will be Wed., Oct. 19 at
noon at Town Hall in Schuylerville. It will be a sandwich luncheon
with the Teacup Auction to follow. Dessert will be provided. Bring
in an item for the Auction. New members welcome. Call Pat 3312978

THE IMPORTANCE OF FINDING BREAST CANCER EARLY

The goal of screening exams for early breast cancer detection is to find cancers before they start to cause symptoms. Screening
refers to tests and exams used to find a disease, such as cancer, in people who do not have any symptoms. Early detection
means using an approach that lets breast cancer get diagnosed earlier than otherwise might have occurred. Breast cancers that
are found because they are causing symptoms tend to be larger and are more likely to have already spread beyond the breast.
In contrast, breast cancers found during screening exams are more likely to be smaller and still confined to the breast. The size
of a breast cancer and how far it has spread are some of the most important factors in predicting the prognosis (outlook) of a
woman with this disease. Most doctors feel that early detection tests for breast cancer save thousands of lives each year, and
that many more lives could be saved if even more women and their health care providers took advantage of these tests.
Following the American Cancer Society's guidelines for the early detection of breast cancer improves the chances that breast
cancer can be diagnosed at an early stage and treated successfully.

COMMUNITY CHURCH CELEBRATING ITS 200TH! In an age where buildings, photos and
messages disappear in an instant, the celebration of a community and church complex that has
existed for 200 years is an event not to be missed. On Saturday and Sunday, October 15 & 16, the
greater Fort Miller community will host a birthday celebration to commemorate the beginnings of
what is now considered an intact example of a 19th century church & community complex. The
complex, listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1996, was built on land given to the
community by the Bleeker family of Albany. Descendants of the Bleeker family are expected to
speak during the celebration. The weekend of festivities begin on Saturday morning with long time
organist and music director, Debbie Anderson opening the celebration. The musical prelude will be
played on the hybrid pipe organ located in the churchs balcony. The organ was updated for sound
amplification and donated by Jim Petit who served as church organist for 50 years before turning
the reins over to Mrs. Anderson in the 1990s. Malcolm Sanders who grew up attending the church
sermons and now serves as the main archivist will provide an overview of the buildings uses over
the years. It began as a meetinghouse open for all Protestant denominations. In 1822, the Reformed
Protestant Dutch Church was formed and remains active to this day. Local historians from the
Washington County and Fort Miller Historical Societies will talk about Fort Miller as a community
both before 1816 and through the present day. Given the beauty of the churchs architecture, Bill
Krattinger of the NYS Department Of Historic Preservation will share his knowledge of why the
complex was added to the National Register of Historic Places. Yet perhaps the most important part
of the celebration is looking to the future of the church complexs uses and its impact. In an era
where many small, tolerant and all accepting church communities of faith struggle to survive and
grow their membership, the Fort Miller Reformed Church is unique in its strength and longevity.
As it prepares to celebrate 200 years as a community resource for various denominations, groups
and families, they invite the greater community of Washington & Warren Counties and beyond to
join them as they look to the next 200 years. The formal presentations will be followed by a tour of
the historic artifacts, family friendly activities and a light fare luncheon of fall inspired foods and
drinks. Read apple cider, donuts, pumpkin breads and a birthday cake worthy of celebrating 200
years of community. For additional information, email fortmillerchurch@gmail.com or stop by the
9:30 am Sunday summer service. The church is located on the banks of the Hudson River off Route
4 at 1239 Fort Miller Road just north of Lock 6 and is a welcoming congregation open to all. The
Fort Miller Church Complex located on the Hudson River (since 1816).

Beautiful pastel Callie is seven years
old. She found herself at SCAC when
her owner moved and was not able to
take her. She is timid at first so it is
advisable to move slowly and let her
come to you. Once she has warmed
up to you, she is a talkative lady. Callie
would prefer to be an only pet but she
will coexist with other cats if they are respectful. She is
not a fan of children, but older ones who understand her
preferences will work. Her ideal home would have lots of
cuddling on a sofa, relaxing the days away. Callies adoption is sponsored by Maple Leaf Realty and all adoption
fees are waived.
Apollo is a two year old Siberian Husky.
This handsome boy is friendly, independent,
and active and was brought to Second
Chance because he was too much for his
family. Apollo needs to go to a home with
an experienced dog owner and needs to be
the only pet. He can possibly go to a home
with older children who have been exposed
to my breed. Apollo will make a wonderful companion to
an owner comfortable with this breed of dog.
This big boy is Zeus. He is a friendly
and calm four year old American Shelter Dog. Zeus was brought to SCAC
because he wasnt the right fit for his
previous home. He tends to be protective of his family so older children and
possibly other dogs would be best.
Zeus would like a home where he can
play fetch and go for leisurely walks.
