Gauge Care & Handling


Procedure TSH-GP-00.0008
Prior to storage or shipment, gauges shall be cleaned of all rust,
debris, metal chips, bluing, coolant, etc. Licensees are not allowed
to modify or repair proprietary gauges without prior approval from
Tool & Gauge.
After cleaning, apply a coat of protective oil, particularly to
working surfaces of the gage and areas where identification,
expiration date, and tolerance marking is applied. The following
protective oils are approved for use during storage and shipment
of gauges:
For long term storage (more than 1 week) or shipping: A water
displacing oil, wet lubricant, that inhibits rust and corrosion. Such as
LPS 3
Premier Rust inhibitor.

For short term storage and day to day use: A nondrying, oily film
or dry lubricant that displaces moisture and protects against
corrosion such as LPS 2 Industrial Strength Lubricant or Starrett
M1 All Purpose Lubricant
Gauges should be returned in the box gauge was received in
Ensure latch is in working order and tape around lip of gauge box
and over latches

Prior to shipping a proprietary threaded gauge or gauge set, the facility shall
verify that:
All markings are legible on each gauge
Each gauge is legibly marked with the serial number (SN) of the set. NOTE: The
serial number may have a letter suffix, i.e. SN 10A is part of gage set SN 10.
(verify all in the set shipped)
Each gauge is legibly marked with the calibration expiration date of the set.
Each gauge is legibly marked with standard and tolerance lines if applicable
Record on a shipping document, identifying any loss or damage
Document to become part of quality record
Correction made to gauge identification not permitted without approval of Tool &
Gauge manager

Hydril Series 500 Tubing Gauge Check Standards
Prior to calibration check, clean check standard and gauges to
remove chips or other particles that could scratch or become
embedded in the surface of the standard or gauge or otherwise
impair the accuracy of the evaluation.
Visually examine the gauge for obvious damage, wear, or other
signs of mishandling that may affect the accuracy or function. A
sharp edge at a thread crest is a sign of excessive thread wear.
Gouges and steps in seals and pilots are also indicators of
excessive wear.
Application of damaged gauges to the check standard could
damage the check standard. Visually examine the check standard
for damage before the application of each gauge.

Gauge Care & Handling


Check standards that are damaged or determined to be out of
product tolerance are to be removed from use immediately and
the gauge set returned to Tenaris Manufacturing Service Tool and
Gauge.
Gauges to be qualified should be brought to the same temperature
as the check standard.
Apply an approved bluing compound to the seal surface of the
gauge in compliance with the requirements of drawing TSH-IP00.0074 Characteristics of Bluing for Seal Surfaces. This must be
performed any time the gauge seal will be in contact with the
standard. The gauge shall be applied to the check standard as if
applying to normal product. Excessive torque should not be used.
The gauge shall be applied with the check standard standing on
end.
