Introduction to PRINCE2 - Module 4. The Seven Principles The seven PRINCE2 principles are Universal in that they apply to all projects; self-validating in that they have been proven over many years; and are empowering because they give users of the method ability to influence and shape how the project is managed Focus on Products means that the project's deliverables will be the driver of any activity carried out. Continued Business Justification ensures the project remains worthwhile. Learn from Experience gives focus on continued improvement. Manage by Stages promotes the practice of breaking down the project into manageable parts, and planning each of these parts as we approach it. Tailor to Suit the Project Environment promotes appropriate use of the method. Manage by Exception helps to reduce unnecessary involvement of senior management, and enables the project manager to manage the work within tolerances. Defined Roles and Responsibilities means that people and groups across an organization are engaged with the project and understand where responsibility lies. ® Continued Business Justification ® Learn From Experience ® Defined Roles and Responsibilities StU) Melhor) ® Manage By Exception ® Focus On Products ® Tailor To Suit The Project Environment The Lesson: PRINCE2® is principles-based which means that PRINCE2 can be applied regardless of project scale, type, organization, geography or culture. If the principles are applied, then PRINCE2 is being used. Put another way, the principles must be observed for PRINCE2 to be applied. This can be empowering for the Project Manager by adding confidence and ability to influence and shape how the project will and should be managed. The seven principles can be arranged to spell P-JESTER, a useful acronym to help remember the seven principles. The juggling balls used by a jester represent the juggling act often involved in ensuring that the principles are being applied and the fact that if you drop one then you are not using PRINCE2!
