Question 1 (33 marks)
An experiment was carried out to determine the concentration of sucrose solution which
is isotonic to the cell sap of potato strips.
Diagram 1.1 shows the set up of apparatus for this experiment. By using a cork borer, a
cylindrical potato strip with diameter 1cm was obtained. The potato strip was cut at 4 cm
long.

Diagram 1.1
The mass for each of the potato strips is measured by using a compression balance.
Diagram 1.2 shows the initial mass for each of the potato strips.

(e)

(i)

Construct a table and record all the data collected in this experiment.
Your table should have the following titles:
- Concentration of sucrose solution
- Initial mass of potato strips
- Final mass of potato strips
- Percentage of change in mass of potato strips

(ii)

Use the graph paper to answer this question.

Using the data in (e)(i), draw a graph to show the relationship between the
percentage of change in mass of potato strips and the concentration of the
sucrose solution.

(f)

Based on the graph in (e)(ii), state the concentration of the sucrose solution which is
isotonic to the concentration of the cell sap of the potatoes. Explain your answer.

The potato strip from 0.6 M sucrose solution was taken out and was dried with
tissue paper. Then it was immersed in distilled water for 1 hour. Based on the result
of this experiment, predict the final mass of the potato strip. Explain your
prediction.

In another experiment, it was found that a mustard stem strip that was immersed in
0.8 % sodium chloride solution did not undergo a change in mass.
The following solutions are used in this experiment.

0.25 % sodium chloride solution, 0.65 % sodium chloride solution, 1.10 %

Question 2 (17 marks)
A hawker finds that washing the bowls in water containing 10ml of washing liquid which
contains enzymes is more effective than washing the bowls in water containing 5ml of the
same washing liquid.
Based on the situation, design a laboratory experiment to study the effect of enzyme
concentration on the rate of enzyme reaction.
The planning of your experiment must include the following aspects:
a) Problem statement

b) Hypothesis
c) Variables
d) List of apparatus and materials
e) Experimental procedure or method
f) Presentation of data
