Goose Creek Meeting of the Religious Society of Friends (Quakers), Lincoln, Virginia

Queries for Tenth Month:

Fostering Community

Are love and harmony within the Meeting

community fostered by a spirit of open sharing?
What helps our Meeting build trust in one another?
How do we get to know one another in our
spiritual community?
How do we make time in our lives for our Meeting?
How do our conflicts have the potential to enrich
the life of our community?

Monthly Meeting for Worship

with a Concern for Business,
Tenth Month:

John Allen Brown and Meredith Catherine Kope were

married under the care of the Meeting on September
17, 2016.
A memorial meeting for worship for Rodney Arthur
Pelton was held on September 24, 2016.

The Unity with Nature and Religious Education

Committees will schedule and plan a spring meeting
for worship at Friends Wilderness Center.

The Unity with Nature Committee is working to

establish a Green Team, using the ideas that Phil
Favero presented to Meeting last month. They plan
to have a representative from each of the other
committees on the team. It will concentrate on
making us more aware of creating a more sustainable
environment around Meeting, as well as to help
Friends with their individual energy use. Meeting
agreed to move forward with this.

Plans are under way for a bicentennial celebration

celebrating the 200th anniversary of the building
of our present Meeting House. Some Friends have
already volunteered to serve on a planning committee;
anyone else who is interested should contact Carolyn
Unger. Possible dates for this event are September 30,
October 21, or November 4, 2017.
Mobile Hope will be moving to a new location in
Leesburg in October and will need help with the
move. Peggy King will let Friends know when the
date for the move is determined.

Voices of Faith

From Loudoun Interfaith Bridges, which presents

Voices of Faith on Thursday evenings (7:00) at
Cascades Library:

This series, which continues through December

15, builds bridges of understanding and respect
between diverse religions and ethnicities. Explore
the common ground of these faiths to foster better
understanding and relationships, without intent to
convert or condemn.

Sheila Kryston and Chuck Hedges will speak about

Quakerism on October 13.

Lincoln Historic Homes Tour:

Sunday, November 6, 2016

This tour, sponsored by the Loudoun Preservation

Society, will last from 1:00 until 5:00 p.m. Goose
Creek Meeting will be the starting point and a
location for ticket sales, a display of art work, and
the distribution of information about the Loudoun
Preservation Society and historic buildings in the area.
We need Friends willing to stand at the doors of
the Meeting House during the event to offer a brief
history of the building and of Oakdale School.
We would also like to have someone in the small
gathering room with our pictures who could talk
about Samuel M. Janney. Because we are attempting
to reduce our carbon footprint, we will be using our
plates and cups for refreshments, so we will need two
people in the kitchen to run the dishwasher. Finally,
Maria Nicklin can use help with the bake sale and
the kids who will be selling their baked goods. There
is a sign-up sheet in the meeting gathering room for
volunteers. Thank you!

Susan Webb Hammond

Susan Webb Hammond, a long-time member of

Goose Creek Meeting, passed away on August
13, 2016. She and her husband, Bob, lived in
Washington, DC, but owned an historic farm at
Silcott Springs near Lincoln from 1973 until 1998.
They brought their children out to the farm on
weekends and in the summer, and became members
of Meeting. Her son, David, has written to us that
they found meeting for worship special The ticktocking clock, its atmosphere of spiritual inquiry, and
vigor among very well-settled ways, and the familiar
pleasures of hearing Malcolm Hoag reciting Abu Ben
Adhem and First Corinthians 13.
David sent us this obituary: Susan taught political
science at American University for 44 years,
publishing extensively on congressional staffs and
caucuses, and is remembered as an encouraging
mentor to younger scholars, especially to women
entering the field. She was head of the Bryn Mawr
College Alumnae Association, and was a trustee of
Farm and Wilderness Summer Camps in Vermont,
which had been established by her parents. She is
survived by her children, Susan Waite Hammond of
Bethesda and David Hammond of Washington, D.C.,
and by two grandsons.
We are pleased to hear that Goose Creek was a
spiritual home for the Hammond family. We hold
them in the light and hope they will visit us.

Our Religious Education Committee Needs You!

We have a really great, but tiny, committee. We meet the second Wednesday
of each month for a delicious potluck meal and lots of work, 6:30 to 8:00
p.m. If you are curious, please contact marianicklin@gmail.com. Consider if
you might like to: teach, develop lesson plans, maintain the First Day School
scrap book, help with Book Sunday and the ice cream social, organize a
student trip, help with bake sales, get involved with the students Quaker
Super Hero puppetry project, manage the budget, be a FAP, take minutes or
enrich our meetings by being there. Please join us! We need you.
The life of a religious society consists in something
more than the body of principles it professes and the outer
garments of organization which it wears The springs of
life lie deeper, and often escape recognition. They are to be
found in the vital union of the members of the society with
God and with one another, a union which allows the free
flowing through the society of a spiritual life which is its
strength. William Charles Braithwaite, 1905
