OBJETIVO DE LA PRACTICA
ABSTRACT
At the beginning we had to know the new materials to use and the equipment of
the lab of pyro metallurgy: the chemicals, the muffles, the melting pots, cups, and
the professors explained us the procedures and the safety measures we must
kept.
Next, we prepare the materials for the Fire Assay method for the estimation of
ore grades which has two steps.
For the first one, we mixed in a melting pot the river sand with gold content with
some chemicals, each one for a different reaction: litharge for creating the alloy
of lead and gold (also silver); silica, to give the blend more fluidity; sodium
carbonate, to eliminate the sulfides; borax, to decrease the melting point of some
dross, so they can melt on the lab muffles (Tmax = 999 C); flour, to burn and
create carbon dioxide with the oxygen of the muffle, so the litharge can create
metal lead instead of lead oxide; and common salt, as it has a high fusion point
and a low density, it can create a layer on the top of the blend to insulate it from
the oxygen. Also for educational proposes, we had to add some gold concentrate
from other sources, and the chemical quantities are not economic for the amount
of gold to concentrate. Then we had to put the melting pot inside the muffle for
an hour.
The next step is the cupellation, for it, we had to pour the blend on an iron matrix
and wait for it to cool, then we hit the bottom of the stiffen blend to get the alloy
bud. After that, we put the bud on the cup and put it inside the muffle again, so it
can melt the alloy and the porous cup could absorb the lead oxide but not the
gold or silver.
After another hour, we cool the cup and the final product it is going to be an alloy
of pure gold and silver called Dore.

METODOLOGIA DE LA PRACTICA
Materiales:
100.03 g de litargirio
35.06 g de slice
25.04 g de Brax
2.02 g de harina
Sal de mesa
Tenazas de herrero
Mufla
Procedimiento:

complementarlos.
