CHAPTER 4: FORCE AND PRESSURE (ANSWER)

SECTION A
SPM 2003 [Section A, No.5]
1 (a)
The reading of spring balance in Figure 7 is higher than Figure 8 / The reading of
spring balance in Figure 8 is less than Figure 7
(b)
Weight of metal block, buoyant force , Spring tension
(c)
Spring tension = Weight of metal block buoyant force
Total buoyant force = total force downward
(d)
Archimedes Principle
(e)(i)
The reading is less than 7 N
(ii)
The density of salt solution is higher than the density of water. The apparent weight is
higher, as such the buoyant force is higher.
SPM 2005 [Section A,No.5]
2 (a)
The position of the paper in Figure 5.2 is higher than 5.1
(b)

(c)
(d)(i)
(ii)
(e)
(f)

The rapid flow of air causes a lower pressure on the upper surface of the paper as
compared to the bottom surface because airflow over the bottom is slow. The lifting
force will act upward.
The edge of the paper will continue to rise
Because the air pressure of air continues to drop.
Bernoullis principle
Filter pump / insecticide sprayer/Bunsen burner / Carburetor / aerofoil

SPM 2006 [Section A, No.5]

3 (a)
The rate of change of distance
(b)(i)
Movement of air
Paper and canopy being lifted
(ii)
The air pressure above the paper is lower the air pressure below the paper
(iii) The higher the speed of air , the lower the pressure
(c)
Bernoullis principle
(d)(i)
The speed of air at P is higher than Q
(ii)

SPM 2007, [Section A, No.2]

4 (a)
Force per unit Area
(b)
Water pressure. P = gh
= 1000 x 10 x 3
= 30 000 Pa / 30 kPa answer with correct unit
(c)
Water pressure at Q is higher than P.
The vertical distance from the water surface to point Q is greater than P.

SPM 2008, [Section A, No.7]

5 (a)(i)
Pascals principle.
(ii)
Pressure at P is same as the pressure at Q
(b)(i)
P = F/A
= 50 /0.04
= 1250 Pa
(ii)

(c)(i)
(ii)
(iii)

P = F/A
1250 = F / 0.8
F = 1000 N
When the handle is pressed down several times, a force is applied to the small piston.
The resultant pressure is transmitted uniformly to the larger piston. The force is
greater due the large surface area and able to lift the load.
Increase the cross-sectional area of the large piston.
Open the release valve.
