Dentistry is not only better financially , it has an artistic side ...

dentists
diagnose , prescribe and restore teeth in an esthetic way ... dentistry
has many specialties that all serve a common purpose and inside a
small oral cavity but each in a different approach meaning that you are
able to express your personality in your work unlike medicine which is
cut and stitch imo
The way I see it: quite similar. Dentists just specialize earlier, generally
have better pay and better hours.
I don't know why people say things like "teeth are boring therefore I
wouldn't want to be a dentist. I don't want to look at mouths all day"
It's just a part of the body (system etc), much like various medical
specialties.

Why would looking at vag/skin/bones/eye/ears/babies/cadavers etc all

day be any less boring?
Money will concern you in the long term.
Working hours will also concern you in the long term.
More importantly the ratio between the two will matter to you the most
when the excitement about being a doctor/dentist in real life wears off
and you need to pay bills and look after a family!

Just saying do whats best for not only job satisfaction, but all the other
factors too
Do dentistry. Less stress, better wages, reliable income, happy life.
Dentist - better lifestyle, better working hours, better (but not
guaranteed in general practice) salary. Consultancy/hospital posts pays
the same in medicine/dentistry in general. Slightly more for dentists
initially. Time pressure is a pain in dentistry and being self employed.
Medicine - more interesting job.
What I love about dentistry is I can always fix a patients problem, they
come to me in pain and they will leave with a solution. There is always
something you can do. In medicine that quite often isn't true.

Anaesthesiology

Pros:
1.) Great residency lifestyle,50-60 hour weeks, days off following call, 2-4 weekends off
a month.
2.) Short patient interactions, but usually positive, as another said.
3.) Vibrant environment, in and out of the OR, working with different Docs all the time,
around different nurses, this can be a very cool field if you like to socialize with your
peers.
4.) On any given day, you never know what kind of case you might be assigned to.
5.) Theres nothing better than taking someones pain away, in seconds flat, it tends to
make you feel good too.
6.) Potential for specialization, pain, critical care.
7.) No overhead ( unless you run a pain clinic)
8.) Not as much hipaa to deal with as some other specialties
9.) Not as much paperwork as other specialties, and virtually no pseudo-social work like
the primary care fields
10.) Great post residency lifestyle. A friend of mine finished one year ago, and made
$380K his first year out, with most weekends off. This is not uncommon, especially in
the south, where you can live very well on this amount of money.
11.) If you like phys, then this is the specialty for you.
Cons:
1.) Long cases can get boring.
2.) When things go bad, they REALLY go bad, you had better be able to think on your
feet.
3.) If you can fix things quickly, you can screw them up just as fast.
4.) Fairly large number of malpractice lawsuits.
5.) High drug addiction rate. Stay away from the fentanyl
There are other pros and cons, but this is a good list. Hope it helps, I think this is an
awesome field.
What I've heard is that dermatology, radiology and anesthesiology have the
most regular hours,

Here are my 3 main reasons...

1. I really like physiology and pathophysiology. So it's a good specialty to be in
because you see a little bit of everything. One day your patient has diabetes and
heart disease. The next day you have a patient with gout and muscular dystrophy.
It's interesting!
2. I like to do lots of other things in my life, and anesthesiology is one of the few
specialties where you can work in shifts. If your shift is from 7 to 7, then right on
the dot at 7pm someone else comes in to the OR and relieves you so you can go
home. That's nice! Most other specialties are not like that, especially surgical
ones!
3. Most anesthesiologists I've met are happy and chill people. I don't like being
yelled at (like surgeons), and I don't like being unhappy and frustrated because
I've been at work for 29 hours straight (like medicine).
I trained mostly as a jazz composer, but I also have a degree in studio engineering. My
main instruments are voice and piano. Do you play??

This thread is quite pessimistic. I have just recently applied to dental school, but I was
raised in a family of dentists, so I would like to think I know a bit about the profession
and the lifestyle. What people are saying on here isn't exactly true. Both my parents and 2
of my uncles are dentists, and my exposure to the profession may be different from the
norm, but I don't think dentistry is as bad as people make it seem on here.
My one uncle, who is 41, and his partner each pull in over 500k a year. My uncle has 2
beautiful homes, exotic cars, and vacations regularly. My mother hasn't worked in 15
years, and my father makes enough money to comfortably support our family working 28
hrs a week for the past 10 years. My dad and I go on dental golf outings at least twice a
month, and out of the 9 other dentists we golf with, 6 of them have ferrari's.
I'm not saying that nice cars and homes are an indication of whether or not a profession is
"worth it" but there are definitely plenty of opportunities to become successful as a
dentist. Work hard, develop your social skills, get to be good friends with already
practicing dentists, and dentistry still has enormous potential to be a great career choice.
Like any other profession, in dentistry, the "best" can make a killing. But the good thing
about dentistry, is even if your not the best, the average dentist still makes plenty more
than most other people in the world.
Once again, these are just my observations. I'm just trying to provide a little reassurance
for all of those who after reading the posts on this site, think that they are wasting 8 years
of there life busting their ass in school for a ****ty end result.
