ABOUT OUR
SCHOOLS GUIDE

200 St. Paul Place, Suite 2480

Baltimore, MD 21202
Main Number: 443.524.8100

The following pages list independent primary and secondary schools

in the state of Maryland, including both secular and religious schools
that are not part of the states public school systems. The list is
based on information provided by the website of the Maryland State
Department of Education and by the schools themselves. In many
cases, we talked to school representatives; in some cases, we relied on
school websites.
Our list does not include independent schools that offer only nursery
school or kindergarten classes. However, those schools are listed by
county on the MSDEs website, www.marylandpublicschools.org;
phone 410-767-0100.
Tuition figures are the latest available.
Schools often charge fees that are not considered part of tuition.
We recommend that readers contact schools directly to check on
tuition and to ask about additional fees, enrollment policies and
waiting lists.
Readers also should be aware that just because the state licenses a
school to teach certain grades, that does not mean all of those grades
are offered.
It is important to us (and to our readers) to keep the information in
this semi-annual guide as accurate as possible.
Please bring any discrepancies to our attention by emailing
Jessica.Gregg@TheDailyRecord.com.

Interview know-how:

How to stay calm, ask questions, be yourself

BY BRIAN PAPPALARDO
Special to the Daily Record

Paige North has talked with hundreds

of prospective students at Roland Park
Country School, so when parents ask for
advice on how to prepare their child for
private school admissions interviews,
she shares a favorite story.
A few years ago, we had a very good
student and lacrosse player I interviewed who wanted to start in our ninth
grade, said North, an upper school admissions associate and the ninth-grade
academic dean at the Baltimore school
for girls. In the interview, I thought
wed talk mostly about lacrosse, but she
talked with equal passion about Shakespeare. She became a great student and
athlete here.
North and other admissions professionals across the state say interviews
like that, with a personal twist, help
make students stand out. Information
about a special interest like Shakespeare
would likely not appear on an application, North said. Its always a good interview when students talk about what
matters in their heart.
Private school officials are starting
the 2017-18 application season, which
usually runs from fall into winter.
There are applications, transcripts,
teacher recommendations, and admissions testing, but schools most look
forward to getting to know the stu-

dents and parents on visiting days or

during tours.
The student interviews are important,
admission officials said, because they
help determine whats best for the children. Every school applies a different
weight to its importance.
Lisa Shambaugh, the director of
admission at St. Andrews Episcopal
School, a coed pre-k-12 school in Potomac, said she is surprised in every interview. Even if the children are prepared
by their parents, the children speak in
their authentic voice when they are with
us, she said. There is a lot more to every child than what is on the application
and tests.
Private school officials say parents
and students can expect the following,
and offer some advice:
STUDENT INTERVIEWS

Get your child ready: At Glenelg

Country School, a coed pre-K-12 school
in Ellicott City, Karen Wootton, the director of admission and financial aid,
calls the students visiting day an important component of the admissions
process. Her advice echoes the advice
of other admission officials: Gently prepare the child.
Its great if they have a few questions
prepared ahead of time, she said, noting the children can learn a lot by reading a school website. But whats most
important is telling the interviewers

about who they are. Its an opportunity

for their personalities to shine through.
Admissions officials say children can
expect questions about their friends
and family, current school, what they
do on the weekends, if they like sports
and play a musical instrument, where
they have traveled, what books they like,
their favorite foods, and more.
Students are usually interviewed
alone. Children are more willing to
open up if their parents are not there,
Wootton said.
Sometimes, good interviews start
with a simple question from the student. Many ask about our lunches,
and that usually starts a conversation,
Wootton said.
Finally, North suggests practicing
handshakes and eye contact. These are
skills that get lost today, she said.
But dont over-prepare: Wendy Sturges, the assistant director of admissions
at the Bullis School, a coed schools for
grades 2-12 in Potomac, said she does
not want children to feel like its a makeor-break job interview. We want to get
to know them. There are no curveball
questions.
Once they relax, children frequently ask
about what matters to them: homework,
if the teachers and students are nice, and
extracurricular activities, among other
questions. They are honest about what
they are thinking, Sturges said.

PARENT INTERVIEWS

Be honest: Admissions professionals

agree that being candid about your child
is best.
Its always good for the child if there is
an open, honest dialogue when we meet
with parents, said Steve Birdsall, director of admissions and financial aid at
The McDonogh School, a coed pre-K-12
school in Owings Mills.
North agreed: Be realistic about
what makes your child tick and what
might be challenging. Dont say she is
an excellent reader if she is not.
Ask many questions: Parents usually
talk about their childs academic experience and what they expect from a new
school. What are the goals of the child and
parents? What is the orientation process
and how are students integrated in the
school? What is the level of communication between parents and the school?
Tell the school what you are looking
for and be sure it has what you and your
child want, Wootton said.
Its a great opportunity for both parties to ask specific questions and determine whether a school is the right fit for
the child, Shambaugh agreed.
The application process should be a
positive experience for the child, North
said. Not only are you looking at schools,
but your child will grow through the interaction with the people at the schools.
Its important, this is a family decision.

Parents clubs:

Get involved you wont embarrass your kid!

BY RACHEL WALLACH
Special to The Daily Record

Behind all the bull roasts, the silent

auctions, and the teacher appreciation
breakfasts are a bunch of parents who
really like hanging out together.
I love the friendships Ive built. Its
an opportunity to make connections,
meet people, share stories, and establish
friendships that carry on way beyond
graduation, says Barbara Romagnano,
president of the Mothers Club at Mercy
High School in Baltimore.
Parents groups: Most private and parochial schools have them in one form
or another. They host events and chaperone dances, raise funds for schools,
and build community between schools
and families. Parents may join to be part
of their childs education, to find friends,
or to support the school. They often
come away with lifelong friendships,
and closer connections with their kids.
Romagnano signed up for the Mothers Club eight years ago, when her oldest
daughter (now a senior in college) entered Mercy. But even when her kids
her youngest daughter is a senior there
now, and her son just graduated from
collegewere in elementary school,
shed always been involved. Besides
getting to know the parents of her kids
friends, she says family engagement lets
your child know youre connected to her
school and that you want to know whats
going on. Its kind of part of your childs
education, she says.
Shannon Priddy, Parents Association
president at Bullis School in Potomac,
says her involvement makes her feel
more invested in her kids education.
Starting as a room parent when her
now 20-year-old son entered in the 7 th
grade, she began by volunteering for the
schools gala and service events, including the Thanksgiving basket drive, the
apple pie bake, and the 5K charity run.
The group also raises $15,000 a year in
grants for teachers and staff to use in
classrooms.
We feel we play an important role in
the school, but an added bonus is we
like doing it and we like each other,
Priddy says.

Priddy says her kidsshe also has

a daughter who just graduated from
Bullis and a son in the 8th gradelike
seeing her involved in their school, and
she thinks thats true for most kids
even the ones who say theyd prefer not
to see their parents at school. I think
thats what theyre supposed to say,
but kids like to know their parents are
around their school and show that they
care about their school, she says.
As Gilmans former Parents Association president and current director of
parent relations, Maria Tilley has seen
parent involvement from all angles.
While theres a lot of work to get done
planning for the annual bull roast in

March was already under way in Augustshe says parents can choose any
level of involvement to fit their schedules, from sending a few emails to chairing an event to serving on the associations executive committee. The group
will sponsor a daytrip to New York this
year for parents and hosts annual events
like Faculty Staff Appreciation Day and
Family Day & Festival of the Arts, and
the father-son committee holds tailgate
parties before the Baltimore schools
big basketball games.
We really want everyone to feel part
of the community, to feel welcome at
events and activities, she says.
Besides building a tighter-knit com-

munity, Tilley says being involved means

parents are more willing to share ideas
and concerns, and the school benefits
from that input. Romagnano agrees,
saying that she and other parents have
expressed opinions about proposed
changes to the hot lunch program and
the uniform requirements before decisions are made, contributing real-world
feedback from home.
While some parents might hesitate
to get involved for fear of embarrassing
their kids, Romagnano says her experience has been just the opposite. Her
volunteer roles have deepened her bond
with her kids, whether through mother-daughter events with lots of one-on-

We feel we play an

bonus is we like doing
it and we like each other.

one time, or just being on the scene for

the ups and downs in students lives
able to ask how a friend is doing after
losing a grandparent, for example.
The clubs open up opportunities between you and your child and gives you
those chances to connect, she says. It
really fosters that trust and faith that
you have between the parent and the
child. Its that open door; theres no
hidden agenda.

Shadow Days shed light on student experience

BY GINA GALLUCCI-WHITE
Special to The Daily Record

Choosing the right private or independent school to help educate and

shape your child can be a daunting task.
For that reason, many local schools offer shadow days where prospective students have the chance to follow current
pupils to better understand a campuss
atmosphere and academics.
Shadow days help our prospective
students really experience a day in
the life of a Maryvale student. It helps
them understand us at a deeper level
and also lets us have those specific interactions to get to know the student
as a part of the bigger admissions process, said Gracie Smith, director of admissions and financial aid at Maryvale
Preparatory in Lutherville, a middle
and high school for girls.
Dates for shadow days vary by school,
but most occur between late September
and mid-December. Maryvale, which
likes to pair girls with current students
with similar interests, requires that
students register for shadow days.
WHAT ELSE CAN A STUDENT
DO TO PREPARE?

Come with an open mind, advised

Tony McCudden, director of enrollment
management at Sandy Spring Friends
School, a pre-K-12 coed Quaker school
in Montgomery County. But also do a
little research first and find out what it
means to be in a Quaker community.
Visiting students can expect to be fully engaged in the classroom, which has
surprised some students in the past. Its
shocking to some that adults want to interact with them right away, McCudden
said. But students will feel like they are
part of a class.
Prospective middle and upper school
students will spend about two-thirds of
the school day at Sandy Spring, attending classes, a community period, which
could include an assembly or meeting for worship, and finally an organic
lunch, which McCudden said is always
a good way to end the day.
Prospective students at Washington
Episcopal School, a preK-8 coed school
in Bethesda, will receive a call the night
before their shadow visit from a student

In some ways, I dont

necessarily like the term
shadow day. Shadow
means that you are silent
and following. Id rather it
be (named) student for
a day because we want
them to participate and
ask questions and to be
active in the inquisition
of the day.

John Feeley,
Director of Admissions,
Loyola Blakefield

On shadow days, visiting students can expect to be included in classroom activities, like this one at Mercy High School. Dont be nervous, admissions teams
advised. Instead, use this as a chance to see what the school is really like every day. Photo courtesy of Mercy High School

ambassador who will tell them about

the day ahead, answer any questions
and share what to wear.
Once the shadow day has arrived,
students should relax and enjoy. If the
schools a fit, it will be natural, Dana
Miller, director of marketing and communication, said.
We want students to leave saying
this is the best school day Ive ever
had, she said. To that end, the school
also will engage visiting students in the
day-to-day classroom activities. And
younger students are welcome to come
back for second visits, particularly if
they experienced separation anxiety at
their first visit.
STUDENT FOR A DAY

The Towson-based Loyola Blakefield, a middle and high school for

boys, sends out a brochure to interested families giving them questions and
suggestions to consider before and after a shadow day. One pointer encourages student participation.
In some ways, I dont necessarily like
the term shadow day, John Feeley, director of admissions, said. Shadow
means that you are silent and following. Id rather it be (named) student
for a day because we want them to participate and ask questions and to be active in the inquisition of the day.
Feeley encourages visitors to be attentive to atmosphere. How do the
students treat each other? Is it a welcoming, encouraging and uplifting
environment, or is it competitive? Do

students treat teachers with respect

and vice versa? Shadow days aim to
give an authentic experience to prospective students.
You can roll out the red carpet for
him and, metaphorically, you can shoot
off all kinds of fireworks and make sure
he has an ideal meal and dial it up for
him. But is that what he is going to experience here as a student? To me, (an
honest portrayal) is the most important thing, he said.
Most schools also offer additional
events allowing prospective students
the chance to come on campus. Loyola
encourages students to attend their
open house for the opportunity to ask

questions and see programs in action.

Its really an opportunity for families
to meet everyone within the school
community, Feeley said.
Likewise, Mornings at Maryvale
gives a glimpse of community homeroom, an event where the student
body, faculty and staff gather once
a week for prayer services and announcements with a short tour that
follows. They also offer different
workshops in a variety of areas such as
art and lacrosse and encourage folks to
attend their fall play.
All of these (events) help students
and parents get to know us better,
Smith said.
