II. RATIONALE
Today's technologically advanced society has been described by many
as being a high-pressured and fast-paced world that is filled with uncertainty
and ambiguity, a world that is oftentimes just plain stressful. At a school
setting many students are constantly confronted with important decisions
and situations that yield feelings of anxiety, stress, and tension. For example,
many students experience stress with regard to exams, class participation,
and actual performances. Pupils who are involved in such stress-producing
situations frequently develop psychological, physical, or psychosomatic
symptoms (e.g., irrational thoughts, headaches, high blood pressure,
diarrhea). When these symptoms persist or progressively intensify there
exists a potentially serious threat to one's health and well-being.
This stress-management program was developed to help individuals
cope more effectively with stress and to remediate a number of specific
problems associated with stressful situations. In order to achieve this goal
individual and/or group programs are utilized as a means for teaching a
reliable and valid method of relaxation. During these programs each
individual is also assisted in making some changes in his internal reactions
and behaviors toward particularly stressful situations. The program consists
of five (5) days event with one-hour session, except for the last day which
will be conducted for one day because in this day there will be a stress
management training. The program is usually evaluated when all sessions
have been completed. The evaluation consists of both subjective and
objective reports: oral feedback, and a written program evaluation.
III. PROGRAM CONTENT
The majority of what is being taught is stress management skills that
can be used beyond finals week. Participants will be educated on,
participating in and gaining stress management skills every day beginning
the week before finals. The stress management fair will be called Be Well,
Do Well. Each day of the fair will be dedicated to a different topic or skill
students can acquire and use in everyday life during stressful times.

The first day will be called Manic Monday. Many students suffer
from a lack of sleep leading up to and during finals week which can
ultimately cause stress. Therefore, it is imperative they learn ways to relax
their bodies and get at least 6-8 hours of sleep a night to feel refreshed and
stress free. One topic that will be discussed on Manic Monday is
aromatherapy and how it helps the body relaxes before bed. Pupils will have
to opportunity to learn about aromatherapy and stress management by
attending a presentation and taking home samples of essential oils that relax
the mind, body, and soul before bed for a good night sleep.
On Tasty Tuesday pupils will learn what kind of nutrition is vital for
remaining healthy and stress free during finals. Many pupils find themselves
either losing their appetite or overeating while stressed out. Healthy eating is
so important to maintain during stressful times because eating habits can
get out of control. Eating healthy and nutritious meals or snacks will keep the
body energized and increase concentration and retention. Therefore, during
Tasty Tuesday pupils will learn what kinds of foods are healthy during finals
week and stressful times. Healthy snacks (fruit, veggies, nuts, and dark
chocolate) and water will be available for students to take to remain
nutritious and hydrated.
Exercise/fitness is the topic for Work It Out Wednesday. Exercising
the mind, body and soul is imperative to stay stress free. Taking a break to
exercise will help relieve stress, socialize, gain focus, and feel energized.
Pupils will learn and participate in various short exercises that can be done in
15-30 minutes in order to stay on track and feel better. On the flip side, some
pupils are not interested in fitness. Therefore, breathing exercises, muscle
relaxation, and yoga workshops will also be available to those who are
interested in relaxing or exercising the mind and soul. Pupils will be able to
take the techniques learned with them to be used at any time.
Take a Break Thursday will entail exactly what the title says,
taking a breaking from studying, writing papers, and taking exams. Doing
school work for long periods of time can become stressful for pupils. They
may begin to lose concentration and stop retaining any information. To
prevent long school work sessions, pupils will be encouraged to take a break
and participate in activities such as movie/TV show marathons offered at the
e classroom, arts and crafts such as tie-dying shirts, or something as simple
as socializing with friends. This will teach pupils effective ways to take breaks
in order to relieve stress.
The end of the week is all about having fun hence the name, Funday
Friday! Funday Friday will entail everything the pupils have learned
throughout the week plus more. Workshops will be available throughout the
day for pupils who are interested in yoga, meditation, Zumba, and other
fitness related activities. These examples of activities available on Funday
Friday are just a few of many possibilities. There will be also whole day
workshop about stress management. Here is the Stress Management
Workshop Schedule which will be conducted during Friday morning:

MANAGEMENT TRAINING SCHEDULE

I. Introduction 15 minutes

a. Welcome, introductions, review of objectives and agenda

b. Establish ground rules
c. Expectations from participants
II. What is Stress? 30 minutes
a. Definitions of stress
b. Discussion of positive and negative aspects of stress
** Break 15 minutes **
** Ice Breaker Team Building (15 minutes )**
Human spring Ask group members to stand facing each other in
pairs. Their elbows should be bent, with their palms facing toward each
other. Instruct them to touch their palms together, and gradually start
leaning toward each other, so that they eventually hold each other up. Then,
instruct everyone to move their feet further and further back, so that they
have to depend solely upon their partners to remain standing.
III. How Do We React to Stress? 30 minutes
a. Fight or flight response, role of cortisol
b. Participant activity (pairs) on positive/negative stress
** Ice Breaker Team Building (15 minutes )**
Mine field This is a great exercise if you have a large room or
outdoor field. Set up a 'mine field' using chairs, balls, cones, boxes, or any
other object that could potentially be an obstacle and trip someone up.
Leave enough space between the objects for someone to walk through.
Next, divide your group into pairs. Pay attention to who you match with
whom. This is a perfect opportunity to work on relationships, so you might
want to put together people who have trust issues with each other.
Blindfold one person, the 'mine walker' this person is not allowed to talk.
Ask his or her partner to stay outside the mine field, and give verbal
directions, helping the mine walker avoid the obstacles, and reach the other
side of the area.
Before you begin, allow partners a few minutes to plan how they'll
communicate. Then, make sure there are consequences when people hit an
obstacle. For example, perhaps they have to start again from the beginning.
IV. Exploring our Sources of Stress 60 minutes
a. Individual self-assessment activity, feedback
b. Discussion of work-related stress
c. Discussion of stress (mind, behavior, body, spiritual, workplace)
d. Introductory discussion on positive responses to workplace stress
e. Participant activity (health facility role play) on positive/negative
responses to stress
f. Discussion of role play, health worker responses

** Ice Breaker Team Building (15 minutes )**

Poker Tower Distribute a pack of poker cards and a pair of scissors
to each group of 2-5 members. Instruct them to build the tallest poker tower
using ONLY the cards and scissors given to them. This will stimulate

creativity and team bonding, as the team figures out how to build the tower
with the limited material available.
** Lunch Break 60 minutes **
** Ice Breaker Team Building (15 minutes )**
Helium Stick (15 minutes) This is a quick game that serves well
as an ice-breaker or a short coffee break. A long thin stick is required. Be
sure to call the pole a Helium Stick when you introduce the exercise. Place
your group in two lines facing each other. Have each person hold the index
finger of their right hand chest high. Place the helium stick on top of the
outstretched fingers. The challenge is to lower the stick to the ground while
keeping everyones fingers touching the stick. If anyones finger loses
contact with the helium stick, you must start again. At first the stick will
seem to rise (hence the name Helium Stick). In fact, it is simply the upwards
pressure of everyones fingers causing the stick to go up instead of down.
Once everyone relaxes they can easily lower the stick to the ground. This
usually takes ten minutes of laughter and a leader to complete. (Optional:
swap the helium stick for a helium balloon for a smaller team)
V. Stress Management Strategies 45 minutes
a. Introduction to stress management, learning new skills
b. Basic stress management techniques
i. Review of Stress Management Tips (Recognition, Self-Care)
ii. Discussion/reactions to self-care ideas
** Ice Breaker Team Building (15 minutes )**
Salt and Pepper - This activity is fun, excellent for energizing your
team, and also great as a quick ice-breaker exercise. It is simple to set up
and suitable for a wide team size of 10-40 people (ideally even numbered).
As a facilitator, think of pairs of things such as, salt and pepper, yin and
yang, shadow and light, peanut butter and jelly, Mickey and Minnie mouse,
male and female, and so forth. Write each item on a piece of paper (i.e. salt
on one piece and pepper on another), and tape one paper on the back of
each person, making sure they cant see it. When the game starts, everyone
must walk around asking yes or no questions in order to find out what word
they have taped to their backs. Once they figure that out, they need to find
their other pair. Learning how to ask the right questions is the key. (Optional:
The two will then sit down and learn three to five interesting facts about one
another)
VI. Stress Reduction/Relaxation Practical Exercises 40 minutes
i. Deep Breathing
ii. Progressive Muscle Relaxation
iii. Visualization/Imagery
iv. Brief reflection on exercises

** Ice Breaker Team Building (15 minutes )**

TITLE: Alaskan Baseball
IMPACT: Energizes a group with physical activity; challenges teams to work
well
together

RISK: Low emotional, medium physical

GROUP SIZE: 12 or more
DIRECTIONS:
Divide the group into two teams. One team (team A) is the infield. The
other team (team B) is the outfield.
Team A starts by throwing the rubber chicken anywhere in the designated
play area. The chicken must be allowed to land on the ground.
Once the chicken has been thrown, team B runs toward it and forms a single
file line behind it. The first person in line picks up the chicken and passes it
over his or her head to the person directly behind, who passes it backwards
through his or her legs. This over-under pattern continues until the chicken
has reached the end of the line and the last person yells STOP.
VII. Personal Goal Setting 15 minutes
