REASON/DESCRIPTION/OPERATIONAL CONSEQUENCES
Some events of slat or flap lock were reported to Airbus that were caused by a disconnection in the
transmission drive system, which resulted from rupture of an universal joint assembly. Investigation
revealed that the universal joint failed as consequence of the fork end bushes wear out. The lugs of the
universal joints ruptured because the pivot pins were wearing through the fork end bushes and then
coming into direct contact with the fork end. The wear out of the fork end continued until it was
weakened to the point of rupture.
This Inspection Service Bulletin provides instructions for the periodic check of the universal joints of the
slat and flap transmission systems to monitor the wear out damage. This check is based on the
rotational backlash measurement on the specified key universal joint positions.
Accomplishment of this Inspection Service Bulletin will allow a preventive monitoring of the universal
joints for a potential wear damage, which is beneficial from operational and economic point of views.
The immediate replacement of a transmission drive system in which the universal joint is integrated can
be costly.
The Operational/Maintenance Consequences of this Service Bulletin are covered by the update of the
affected publications detailed in "PLANNING INFORMATION".

REASON
(1)

History
Some events of slat or flap lock were reported to Airbus that were caused by

before incorporation of the Service Bulletin.

MANPOWER
The manpower estimates given in this Service Bulletin are based on the direct labor cost to
do the work. These estimates assume that the work will be done by experienced personnel,
and may need to be revised upwards to suit operators circumstances. The estimates do not
include the time to prepare, plan or inspect the work. Manufacture and procurement of parts
and tools, drying times for paints, sealants, etc., and general administration work are also not
included.

Universal Joints on LH and RH Sides

INCLUDED IN THE REFERENCED PROCEDURES

CAUTION:

ALWAYS OBEY THE PRECAUTIONS THAT FOLLOW TO KEEP


ELECTRICAL WIRING IN A SATISFACTORY CONDITION (ELECTRICALLY
AND MECHANICALLY SERVICEABLE). WHEN YOU DO MAINTENANCE
WORK, REPAIRS OR MODIFICATIONS, ALWAYS KEEP ELECTRICAL WIRING,
COMPONENTS AND THE WORK AREA AS CLEAN AS POSSIBLE. TO DO
THIS:

PUT PROTECTION, SUCH AS PLASTIC SHEETING, CLOTHS, ETC. AS


NECESSARY ON WIRING AND COMPONENTS.

REGULARLY REMOVE ALL SHAVINGS, UNWANTED MATERIAL AND


OTHER CONTAMINATION.

THESE PRECAUTIONS WILL DECREASE THE RISK OF CONTAMINATION


AND DAMAGE TO THE ELECTRICAL WIRING INSTALLATION.
IF THERE IS CONTAMINATION REFER TO ESPM 20-55-00.
NOTE:

with TASK 270205-833-801 001 Replacement of the Equipments linked to
the affected Slat and Flap Transmission Universal Joints on LH and RH
Sides at the threshold given in the PLANNING INFORMATION paragraph
E.(2).

Repeat the check of the rotational backlash of each key slat universal
joint from outboard to inboard for LH side at the interval given in the
PLANNING INFORMATION paragraph E.(2).

If the rotational backlash is greater than 3.5 degrees and inferior or equal to 5
degrees:
-

Do a check of the rotational backlash of each single slat universal joints


located inboard of the affected key slat universal joint on LH side in
accordance with SUBTASK 270205-832-007 001 Depending on inspection
results, do a Check of the Rotational Backlash of each Single Slat

AND MECHANICALLY SERVICEABLE). WHEN YOU DO MAINTENANCE
WORK, REPAIRS OR MODIFICATIONS, ALWAYS KEEP ELECTRICAL WIRING,
COMPONENTS AND THE WORK AREA AS CLEAN AS POSSIBLE. TO DO
