The novel that I have learnt is Sing to the Dawn by Minfong

Ho .This novel is about a girl named Dawan, who must convince her
narrow-minded father to allow her to go to the city to study. The
character I admire in the novel is Dawan. This is because she is a
brave, determined and forgiving person.
First of all, Dawan is brave. This is because she is brave to stand
up for her right to get an education. This is vividly shown in the story
when she becomes the object of her fathers anger and frustration after
winning the scholarship. Her father thinks that studying is a waste of time
for girls. To her father, Dawan has robbed her brothers chance to study in
the city. So, she should give up the scholarship as the brother was second
in the test. However, refuses to give in to her fathers demand. She is
brave to stand up and tries to reason with him. In my opinion, it is a
brave thing to do because her father is a fierce man who does not like his
daughter to disobey him.
Moreover, she is also determined. This is because she is
determined to pursue her dream of going to the school in the city. This is
clearly shown in the story when she is willing to walk 3 km in the hot
sun with her mother to Nois house. She is determined to see Noi and find
out about the city life. She also hopes Noi can help her to persuade Father
to let her go. However, she does not give up when Noi refuses to help and
says that the city will bring Dawan more harm than good. I think she has
shown a good example of being determined. Her determination has
taught me that I should not allow a lack of support to stop me from
continuing my dream.
Apart from that, she is also forgiving. This is because she
forgives Kwai for hurting her. This is shown in the novel when Kwai
wants to slap Bao because Bao accuses him of being a bully like her
brother, Vichai. Dawan tries to stop Kwai from hitting Bao. Kwai pushes
her and she hurts her ankle when she falls onto the broken bird cage.
Although she is hurt, she does not stay angry with Kwai. She shows her
forgiveness by giving her umbrella to Kwai while she walks home in the
pouring rain with an injured ankle. In my opinion, Dawan is someone I
admire because she shows that it is important for sibling to forgive ones
mistakes.
