In Home Grown School Meals programmes which WFP supports in 37 countries children
receive a more varied diet from locally sourced food, while many others, such as farmers,
traders, and local communities, also benefit financially.
In Tanzania, WFPs Home Grown School Meals programme reaches 28,000 children in
Ikungi district in Singida region and Bunda district in Mara region. Through the programme,
maize and beans have been purchased locally, providing income opportunities for farmers in
the region. WFP works with Project Concern International (PCI) to provide school meals with
the support of Japan Association for WFP and non-governmental organization (NGO) Table
for Two.
On World Food Day we want to recognize the hard work being put in by our partners in
providing food for primary school children, said Michael Dunford, WFP Tanzania Country
Representative. It is because of the effort by the Government of Tanzania, NGO partners,
local farmers and parents that we are able to help these children focus on learning
throughout the day.
In addition to the Home Grown School Meals programme, WFP operations in Tanzania
include initiatives to fight hunger in the areas of nutrition, climate change and market access
for small holder farmers. WFP also provides food assistance for 238,000 refugees in northwestern Tanzania.
