INTRODUCTION:

Study habits defined as the regular tendency and practice that one depicts during the process of gaining information
through learning. Indeed, establishing a proper and efficient study habit will make ones high school life meaningful
and challenging. In addition, it is a pre-requisite on attaining a successful and prosperous life in the near future. But, if
the students do not have a good study habits, this could be a reason for them to get low grades or failing the subject or
dropping out in the school. And that is the most of the problems of majority of the schools and even in the entire
country. Study habits are termed as the methods of study of students. Study habits are students ways of studying
Whether systematic, efficient or inefficient implying that efficient study habits produces positive academic performance
while inefficient study habits leads to academic failure. Learning is acquiring new, or modifying existing,

knowledge, behaviors, skills, values, or preferences and may involve synthesizing different types of
information and a continuous process. There are many ways to attain learning. One way to attain learning is
by studying at school. School is an institution to help people to learn. One should study not only in school
but also outside of the school. Ones should know how to manage their time and the things they will do.
Good study habit should takes place but we know that there are many things that affect our study habit that
is why many students are failing their grades. Is Home environment, advance technology, class schedule, or
the people around you affects your study habits? Many students, today, are dropping and failing their
subjects. This study aims to know what factors affect students study habits. .
Changes in behavior naturally occur in senior high school students. Nowadays, student spends their vacant
time for doing their habits instead of advancing their studies. Some of this habit makes them forgot to do
their school responsibilities because of enjoyment that it caused to them. Playing computer games,
watching their favorite television shows and hanging out with their friends are the common habits of
senior high school students. Good study habits are the key to learning. Everyone cannot be brilliant but
everyone can learn how to study. Effective study habits, even highly intelligent student failed due to
inefficient work and lack of knowledge on how to study effectively. Important skills for study have to be
learned and practiced. Moreover, students who put in more classrooms how and who work to a more
regular program of study have a better academic performance. Students habits tend to be formed in the
early grades and in the most instances, does not materially improve after elementary school. Some students
often complain about mental inability or strain or lack of interest in studies other thinks they are not
capable. The extent of the students learning in academics may be determined by the grades a student earns
for a period of learning has been done. It is believed that a grade is a primary indicator of such learning. If a
learner earns high grades it is concluded that they may also have learned a lot while low grades indicate
lesser learning. However, many experiences and studies found out that there are also several factors that
would account for the grades. No single factor can be definitely pointed out as predicting...

the near future. But, if the students do not have a good study habits, this could be a reason for them to get low grades or
failing the subject or dropping out in the school. And that is the most of the problems of majority of the schools and
even in the entire country.
We can look at this- in part- from the view points of why students fail. Some reasons why students fail are as
follows: (a). No Vision some students do not have a clearly articulated picture of the future they intend to create for
themselves. Thus, they may take programs of study without a clear career goal or objective. In essence, they choose the
wrong major. (b.) Lack of Passion successful students work out of passion, a love for what they want to do, and
recognize the importance of the benefit it will bring others as well as themselves. Without passion, study becomes a
chore and not a method for achieving clearly defined goals. (c.) Lack of personal, work, school, family
balance- whatever is going on in a students personal life, will inevitably affect whats going on in school. Whatever is
happening in school will affect whats going on in their personal life. A student needs time to be in class, and
appropriate time for study. However, there must be time for family, friends, social activities, and time to just be alone.
The key is keeping proper balance. (d.) lack of maturity and discipline- some students are just not disciplined and
lack good organizational skills. They often fall under the pressure of their peers. Rather than using good discretion, they
feel compelled to follow others, when they really should be attending to their studies. (e.) lack of appropriate
balance- there are probably hundreds of factors that affect academic achievement of students: social, economic,

medical/health, familial, relationships between teachers and students, school expectations, the students motivations and
abilities, levels of popularity, types of friendships outside of school and many more. They are all of a sudden, first their
attitude, vice versa, their family status, civil status, age, sex, allowance, etc. but these are the similar reasons. Laziness,
addicted to computer games, socio economic status, lack of sleep, and attitude towards the subjects. To the readers, we
should establish a clearer pact on how different environments and people affect the different practices of a learner in
studying if this aspects will greatly or badly influence on someones mind and attitude towards learning.

Success in school is not so much determined by sheer intelligence as knowing how to study. Studying is a
skill. Being successful in school requires a high level of study skills. Students must first learn these skills,
practice them and develop effective study habits in order to be successful. Very often the study habits and
practices developed and used in high school do not work for students in college. Good study habits include
many different skills: time management, self-discipline, concentration, memorization, organization, and
effort. Desire to succeed is important. Senior high school students have many obstacles to overcome in
order to achieve their optimal academic performance. It takes a lot more than just studying to achieve a
successful college career. Different stressors such as time management, financial problems, sleep
deprivation, social activities, and for some students even having children, can all pose their own threat to a
students academic performance as well as the hours they spend on studying . Study habits are the ways that
students study- the habits that they have formed during their school years. Study habits can be good ones,
or bad ones. Good study habits include being organized, keeping good notes, reading the textbook, listening
in class, and working every day. Being organized means the student can easily access his or her school
stuffs when at school or at home doing homework. Keeping good notes involves good organization of all
the important details regarding his or her lessons not only of taking down it in the notebook but also when
listening during the class. Being attentive and always busy at school reflects a student who has good study
habits. Bad study habits include skipping class, not doing their work, watching TV or playing video games
instead of studying, and losing their work. The level of students learning in academics may be determined
by the grades a student earns. The grade is the indicator of the students performance in class.
If a student earns an excellent grade; it is concluded that he also have learned a lot, while low grades
indicate lesser learning. However, many experts, professors, and studies believe that there are also several
factors that would account for the grades like studying.
Frank Pogue (2000), president of Chicago State University, also conducted a study to determine why
students are failing. What he founds to be true in that study habits survey was that more than 30 years ago
still rings true today--students fail because they do not know how to study.
He said that a student should make sure that he/she has a good study environment, a good desk, a sturdy
chair, good light, comfortable room temperature and a quiet atmosphere. That means distraction is not an
option. A good overview of the assignment before starting is also good in studying. Know what skills, facts
and ideas that are expected to master and the ground that are expected to cover. Start with most difficult
subject first, while the mind is freshest and most receptive.
Fielden (2004) states that good study habits help the student in critical reflection in skills outcomes such as
selecting, analyzing, critiquing, and synthesizing.
Professors in the developing countries said that the undergraduate students should be fully equip with high
level of analytical skills, the capacity for critical reasoning, self-reflection and conceptual grasp and ability
to learn autonomously and exercise flexibility of mind (Simmons2003). Study habits are said to be
improving because of the advent and wide use of the Internet, hypertext, and multimedia resources, which
greatly affects the Study Habits (Liu, 2005).
Studying is the interpretation of reading materials. Study habits and skills are... As many as you know,
social networks have been famous since 2001 with Friendster, My Space, and Multiply. It is no
surprise how people remember your birthday. Now teenagers are using social networking sites
more frequently than the years 2001 - 2005; most likely due to the rise of broadband internet. In
these social networking sites, people add other people as their friends regardless whether they
know them or not. Also, when it comes to the male users, 80% of men adds women more than
women adds men. Social networking sites are different than each other because they all try
different ways to attract potential users. Facebook has Relationship status, Twitter and Tumblr
has a follow button and Friendster renovated. You can see the differences when you try each
one yourself. Social networking sites according to the study in the internet, are addicting because

you can stalk someone and see the photos of your friends from different locations, add a lot of
friends as a competition against your friends, play games with your friends on some social
networking sites and the excitement of putting a status is indeed exciting. As many of the senior
high school students use these social networking sites as a way to increase their friendship with
others, some have become addicted to it. Although social networking sites are not just the ones to
blame if a student gets low grades. Other factors include daydreaming, video games, peer
pressure, and others. Social network addiction can also cause students to over sleep or go to
school with lack of sleep and thus miss the chance to listen to the teacher. Not to be mentioned,
4th year high school is extremely important to our colleges and graduation. There are also factors
in which physically speaking with people becomes less and less because you already talked on
the Internet.

Conclusion:
How can we improve our study habits?
Everyone has the experience students, starting from kindergarten to high school or university. For most
people, its not hard to become a student, but becoming a student who has great grades is not easy. You
must want to know what causing this difference. The answer is good study habits. In the process of
schooling, many students actually dont have good study habits. If you want to have a good score, the good
study habits can help you more likely to achieve your goals. Improving our study habits can occur in three
stages: developing learning habits, using four study skills and understanding the benefits of good habits.
First of all, students should develop a way of learning. In fact, most of them don't realize that they dont
have completed good study habits. The article Why good study habit may be bad for learning (2010)

talks, "Clear a quiet work space. Stick to a homework schedule. Set goals. Set boundaries. Do not bribe."
But this approach to home studying may be the result of "sketchy education research" and, as such,
completely wrong. This article shows us that our traditional sense of learning habit is not correct.
Consequently, you might ask what good study habits are. The good study habits including setting a regular
time to study that fits in with the student's family schedule; removing distractions; gathering necessary
supplies; recording assignments in an assignment book or on a calendar; note-taking and organizing for a
test Encourage and teach good study habits (1998). Some people don't have completed the study habits,
and some people know use good habits, but those people easy to give up. Therefore, hanging on to those
habits are important factor of our development good study habits.
