Normally,aselectronsaretravellingalongmaterials,suchaselectrical
circuits,theywillstopwhenfacedwithadefect.However,DrGiannini'steam
discoveredthateveniftherewereimperfectionsinthesurfaceofthe
nanoparticle,theelectronwouldstillbeabletotravelonwardswiththeaidof
thelight.
Ifthiscouldbeadaptedintophotoniccircuits,theywouldbemorerobustand
lessvulnerabletodisruptionandphysicalimperfections.
DrGianninisaid:"Theresultsofthisresearchwillhaveahugeimpactonthe
wayweconceivelight.Topologicalinsulatorswereonlydiscoveredinthelast
decade,butarealreadyprovidinguswithnewphenomenatostudyandnew
waystoexploreimportantconceptsinphysics."
DrGianniniaddedthatitshouldbepossibletoobservethephenomenahe
hasmodelledinexperimentsusingcurrenttechnology,andtheteamis
workingwithexperimentalphysiciststomakethisareality.
Hebelievesthattheprocessthatleadstothecreationofthisnewformof
lightcouldbescaledupsothatthephenomenacouldobservedmuchmore
easily.Currently,quantumphenomenacanonlybeseenwhenlookingatvery
smallobjectsorobjectsthathavebeensupercooled,butthiscouldallow
scientiststostudythesekindsofbehaviouratroomtemperature.
