Greetings Nobles, Ladies and Friends
It is such a great honor to see and meet with so many
fellow Shriners. One goal I wanted to do was to go to
as many club and unit activities as I could. Let me tell
you, our Shriners make me proud! Kalif Shriners are
always busy thinking of new ways to get together to
have fun, raise money, bring in new Nobles and keep
Shriners moving forward. I would like to thank all the
Nobles for all that has been done or is in the process of
being done.
Our May Stag was appreciation night for the Ladies
and the North football players. We had over 100 people
in attendance. I would like to thank Warren Pearson
and J.J. for all their time and effort in putting this event
together. The Kan-a-bulls put on another great meal.
GO NORTH GO!
Heidi and I and Chief Rabban Dennis Wilson made
a trip to Jackson Hole May 15th for the Potentate’s
visit. Their president Bob Lundy said RSVP was light,
but the turn out was fabulous. They had to continually
add tables and chairs to accommodate everyone. Heidi
and I would like to thank the Jackson Hole Shrine Club
members for our meals, drinks and lodging. It was
very nice to see Dean Lewis, our Hospital Rep. He did
however inform us that he will be retiring soon. Thank
you Dean, for a job well done! If anyone is interested
in the Hospital Rep. position, please let the Divan know.
May 21st was the stated meeting. It was nice to
see lower bar finished. Many thanks go out to Earl
Wintermute for his awesome metal work! Stop in and
take a look!
Directors Staff had a great meal on the 29th of
May. I told the gang that “there is nuttin’ better than
there cooking”.
The Memorial Day parade in Sheridan had a great
turn out. I was honored to ride with the Kalif Horse
Patrol (and I didn’t fall off!). Thank you Noble Bob
Gould, for your work in getting our Shriners in this
parade.
The Klay Busters shotgun tournament was well
attended with over 60 people there. Noble Mo Schwartz
should be proud of a job well done. Noble Rob and
Paul Schwartz cooked up a great lunch with all the
fixings. Thanks to everyone who attended and helped
with this event.
Inyan Kara Golf tournament had a good turn out.
Thanks go out to Noble Randy Rossman for all his hard
work.
The Shrine Bowl is the next event on the calendar.
I hope to see all of you and your parade units there.
Don’t forget the tailgate party and cheer on the North.
We would love to have that trophy for another year.
June 27th is the Shrine circus in Sheridan at the
fair grounds. Please bring your fez and meet at the
fairgrounds at 2 PM. We need all your help to make this
day run smoothly and be a success for the kids.

Giving Back...
To Shriners Hospitals for Children
Nicholas Espinoza, D.O., is committed to giving
back to Shriners Hospitals for Children — where he
received treatment as a young teen — and where his
daughter now receives care, as well.
Dr. Espinoza, who is a 47-year-old Toledo,
Ohio, family physician, an assistant dean at Ohio
University’s College of Osteopathic Medicine, and a
Zenobia Shriner, was told by doctors he had scoliosis
when he was 14 years old. His father worked for
Zenobia’s Potentate, who suggested they take him
to Shriners Hospitals for Children — Chicago for
treatment.
At the time, the Espinoza family
didn’t have health insurance, so the
medical care provided at no charge
by the hospital was a godsend.
Dr. Espinoza spent a week in the
hospital and wore a brace for two
years to correct the curvature in his
spine. Today, he leads a very active
life.
After graduating from the Ohio
University College of Osteopathic
Medicine, Dr. Espinoza wanted
to eventually pursue becoming a
Shriner.
“I always knew I wanted to join
the Shriners to give back for what
they did for me,” Dr. Espinoza said.
In 2002, Dr. Espinoza, along with his brother-in-
law, Jeff Hamons, and his father-in-law, Jerry Schacht,
decided to take advantage of a class that allowed them
to be raised Masons and created Shriners in one day.
Ever since then, Hamons and Dr. Espinoza have
been active Shriners. Hamons is the First Ceremonial
Master for Zenobia Shriners, and Dr. Espinoza helps
organize Zenobia’s Hakeem Medical Unit, a group of
approximately 25 people with medical and education

POKER RUN
Motorcycle Poker Run
The Inyan Kara Shrine Club and the Newcastle Masonic Lodge No. 13 are jointly sponsoring a poker
run on Tuesday, August 3rd during the Sturgis Motorcycle Rally. The poker run will begin and end at
the ‘Flying V,’ Bed and Breakfast 9 miles north of Newcastle on US Hwy 85. The run will be 171 miles
round trip and will stop at the Masonic lodges in Sundance, Hulett, Upton, Newcastle and end back at the
‘Flying V. ‘ The entry fee is $25. Grand prize is a Weatherby 300 win. rifle with a 3x9 scope. Registration
will begin at 8:30 a.m. at the ‘Flying V.”

various sites within a five-county area around Toledo
throughout the year to screen potential patients for
treatment at Shriners Hospitals for Children.
“We reach out to the community and let them know
Shriners Hospitals for Children is available for evaluating
their children for treatment,” Dr. Espinoza said.
While he often diagnoses conditions in children
who need care at Shriners Hospitals for Children
during the clinics, three years ago Dr. Espinoza
realized his daughter, Valerie, needed the medical
expertise the hospitals provide, as well.
Valerie is an avid volleyball
player, and during a game, Dr.
Espinoza noticed she had an awkward
tilt to one side while serving the
ball. An X-ray confirmed she had
scoliosis.
“I knew immediately I wanted
Shriners Hospitals to care for her,”
said Dr. Espinoza. “I had the most
confidence she’d get the best care
there.”
Since then, Valerie has been
under the care of physicians at
Shriners Hospitals for Children —
Chicago, the same hospital where her
father was treated as a teen. She wore
a brace for two years and is currently being monitored
to determine if she may need surgery in the future.
Today, 15-year-old Valerie is very active and plays
on her school’s volleyball team, along with her sister,
Jacqueline.
”I’ve been blessed to get where I am in life. I want
to help give these young children a better life," said
Dr. Espinoza. "Being a Shriner has to do with their
mission and my perpetual desire to give back because
of my daughter.”

It’s hard to believe June is here already, but
the grass and trees are green as only Wyoming can
produce. We have had a wonderful spring, and on
May 15th I was pleased to conduct my first Ceremonial
in Riverton, Wyoming. A good sized contingent of
Nile ladies from Sahida Temple made the trip across
the mountain, accompanied by several of our nobles.
Thanks for the support, gentlemen!
Preceding the Ceremonial, the ladies of Allah Club
No. 12 of Riverton provided a delicious luncheon
for us. I was excited to see Arachnae, my symbol so
prominently displayed.
We initiated three candidates, Gerri Boesch,
our Exemplifying Candidate, whose Noble John is
a member of Kalif Shrine Center; Stephanie Cox,
whose Noble John (Jack) is a member of Kalif Shrine
Center and the Basin Masonic Lodge; and Georgia
Davis, whose Noble Jim is also a member of Kalif
Shrine Center. We are all pleased to welcome these
new princesses to our Temple.
After the Ceremonial, all members and their
families were invited to a barbeque hosted by Noble
Roger Smith and his Lady – our Princess Jeannette!
I’m here to tell you, that when the Smith’s host a
party, no one leaves feeling hungry! Thanks Roger
and Jeannette!
We are looking forward to helping with the Shrine
Circus on the 27th! I hope every child in Sheridan
County is able to attend! Nobles, if you know a child,
please make certain they get to the circus! See you
there.

The Shriners Hospital Board met May 17th for
their bi-monthly meeting at the Hospital in Salt Lake
City. A teleconference was held on April 19, 2010.
In my March report, I mentioned that our Board
Chairman, Lawrence K. Fielden, made a formal
request to our headquarters in Tampa that the Assistant
Chief of Staff, Dr. D’Astous, be appointed Chief
of Staff. I am very pleased that Tampa offered Dr.
D’Astous the position and he has accepted. Tampa
has yet to act on the recommendation made for the
appointment of a new Assistant Chief of Staff.
Sir Al Madson, our representative from the
International Office in Tampa attended this board
meeting. Sir Al reported that Phase I for the third party
billing project was coming along and that computer
software is being developed for the Hospital that will
allow revenue to be generated from patients who are
covered by insurance. Phase II will include the Salt
Lake City Hospital. Portland, Spokane, Lexington,
and Philadelphia are scheduled to go on line in
October. This month the Salt Lake Hospital will start
passing out letters to the patients informing them of
our intent to bill. Please remember that patients who
do not have insurance or are not covered by Medicaid
will not be expected to pay. The SLCSH administrator,
“Patch,” has done a remarkable job on the Revenue
Cycle Committee. Patch will attend a July 5th –
9th (“go-live”) billing activities at the Portland and
Spokane Hospitals.
Patch reported that the April workload was similar
to March and it appears that with only four surgeons,
this will become the “new normal” for the hospital.
Surgeries, patient days, average census, OR utilization,
and clinic visits all stayed healthy for the second
straight month. However, it looks like May will see
a drop in volumes of about 10% to 15% due to the
departure of Dr. Roach.
Patient applications from March 13th through
April 16th of 2010 were 123 approved and 3 denied.
April 19th through May 14th, there were 135 approved
and 2 denied. From March 13th through May 14th,
Kalif had 11 approved patients and Korein had 10
approved patients with no denials.
There were 119 operations performed at SH-SLC,
and 4 at Primary Children’s Hospital in April. In May,
there were 106 operations at the Hospital, and 4 at
Primary. All 9 surgeries at Primary Children’s were
performed by our staff.
The Juarez, Mexico clinic is being monitored
very closely due to the unrest in the area. The next
scheduled clinic is in July. Staff has expressed their
desire to continue working the clinic. However, it
is on a volunteer basis and all new patients have to
have processed applications and be scheduled to be
seen. Hopefully, this will reduce long lines and avoid
large groups of people gathering that seem to attract
attention of the drug cartel members. The Juarez clinic
is a subject of discussion at every Board meeting to
monitor the current events and the never-ending mess
across the border.
The next scheduled meeting is a teleconference
on Monday, June 21st.

The eleventh Masonic Commemorative Service on Independence Rock on the Sweetwater River between
Rawlins and Casper, Wyoming will be held on July 3rd and 4th, 2010.
On behalf of our Grand Master, MW Harry W. C. Oberg, III, the Freemasons of the Jurisdiction of Wyoming
are pleased to invite all regular masons and their families to participate in this every ten year event honoring
those brothers traveling west who held the first known Masonic communication in Wyoming on the crest of
Independence Rock on July 4, 1862.
Join us for a wagon train, cowboy poetry, Oregon Trail history, a Masonic meeting on the Top of the Rock,
and brotherly fellowship. Camping will be available the night of July 3rd and motel accommodations are
available in Rawlins and Casper.
