CHAPTER 1

INTRODUCTION

In this generation, computers are widely used in day to day activities. This is a general
purpose device that can be programmed to carry out a finite set of arithmetic or logical
operations. Since a sequence of operations can be readily changed, the computer can solve more
than one kind of problem.
In this study, the researcher considered the patient information system, as the area of
concern for investigation. Patient information system is important in every hospital on the basis
that this will give information to the patient.
Though many institution are adopting computerization still many institutions especially
here in rural areas use manual way of recording. One of this is the Maguindanao Provincial
Public Hospital, which serves patient from the Municipality of Sultan Naga Dimaporo and all
other adjacent municipalities like Tukuran, Nunungan and Picong. The hospital is a typical type
of provincial hospital among other in the different 3rd level municipalities in the Philippines. Its
Patients Information system is adequately staffed but its storage is not adequate. Their present
Patient Information System is quite good, and currently well-functioning but since it is in manual
way difficulties like delay in processing the patient records, time consuming, and hassle cannot
be avoided.
As we all know, that information is a data that is accurate, timely, specific
and organized for a purpose presented within a context that gives it meaning and relevance, it
can lead to an increase in understanding and decrease in uncertainty. Information also is
valuable because it can affect behavior, a decision, or an outcome.

However, computerization is a control system that manages processes in industrial

workplace. It reduced human errors and processing time, thus it can boost productivity and
resulted into high quality of product produce. In Information System, it is concerned about
interrelating different but interdependent transactions. This can result in a system with wellintegrated processes that can perform much faster and more accurate than a manual system. It
overcomes many of the defects in the manual system. The output formats can be tailored to suit
quick retrieval of information that is necessary for decision making.
Therefore, electronic forms of information and communication can promote the
emergence of patients as strategic partners in health care. Active use by patients of electronic
mail, personal health records, and the Internet, especially integrated within the context of an
effective physician-patient relationship, holds the potential to improve both individual and
organizational health outcomes.
