POLICY: School Rules and Code of Conduct
POLICY REF #: 3/2009/Rev1.0
These school rules are in accordance with and subject to the South African Schools Act 84 of 1996.
The following rules are to ensure the maintenance of good standards, to the mutual benefit of the school community.
1. No pupil shall do anything, which, in the opinion of the Principal or Deputy Principal and the Governing Body, is
likely to bring discredit upon the school or bring the name of the school into disrepute.
2. No pupil shall physically, verbally or psychologically assault a fellow pupil in any manner, which in the opinion of
the Principal or Deputy Principal, is contrary to the maintenance of a proper standard of moral conduct or social well
being in the school.
3. A pupil shall obey all reasonable orders or instructions given to him by the Principal or Deputy Principal or any
teacher or employee or other person to whom authority has been delegated.
4. A pupil shall participate in any educational programme, which may be prescribed by the Principal or Deputy
Principal, Staff and Education Department, unless special exemption has been granted by the Principal or Deputy
Principal or Education Department or a medical practitioner.
5. Pupils shall attend School for the whole period of the prescribed school hours. In the case of absence, a pupil shall, on
returning to the school, furnish the class teacher with the reason therefore, in writing, under signature of his parent or
guardian.
6. A pupil may not absent himself from class or leave the school premises during school hours, including break times,
without the permission of the Principal or Deputy Principal or of such person to whom responsibility for such pupil
has been delegated.
7. A pupil shall not be insolent, impertinent or discourteous towards any member of staff or any employee or monitor or
prefect, nor shall he incite any other pupil to conduct himself in such a manner.
8. A pupil may not swear or use blasphemous language either on the school premises, or in public.
9. Pupils shall at all times, as required by the Principal or Deputy Principal, wear the official school uniform.
10. The personal appearance and dress of a pupil, whenever that pupil is present at or travelling or proceeding to or from,
any place as a pupil of Pinehurst Primary School, conform to such standards as are considered by the Principal or
Deputy Principal or delegated person in charge of such pupil at the time, to be adequate and suitable.
11. Every item of the pupils school uniform is required to be marked with that pupils name.
12. School property, or anything at the school, which is the property of anyone other than the pupil in question, shall not
be negligently or wilfully damaged, defaced or soiled by a pupil, nor any such property be taken without the express
permission of the owner being first obtained.
13. A pupil shall obey any instruction as may be given by the Principal or Deputy Principal, or such other person to
whom the Principal or Deputy Principal has delegated authority, for the conduct of examinations or tests and shall not
cheat or attempt to cheat in respect thereof.
14. When a pupil has voluntarily joined an extra-mural activity organised by or conducted under the auspices of the
school, he shall, unless he is granted exemption by the Principal or Deputy Principal or such other teacher to whom
authority has been delegated for this purpose, fulfil his obligations and carry out responsibilities in that regard to the
satisfaction of such authorised person.
15. A pupil shall not absent himself from extra-mural practices or matches, without prior reason communicated in writing
under signature of his parent or guardian, to the person in charge of the extra-mural activity concerned. Should such
pupil be absent from school the aforementioned communication shall be made upon his return to school.

16. If a function or outing (extra-mural or otherwise) is held away from school premises and official school transport has
been arranged, no pupil may, without permission of the Principal or Deputy Principal or school authority, be driven or
obtain a lift in any vehicle which has not been officially approved to carry pupils representing the school at such
function or outing.
17. No circular, notice, pamphlet, banner, poster or other object shall be distributed on the school premises or placed on
any of the schools notice boards or on any other place, on or within or in proximity to the schools premises, without
the permission of the Principal or Deputy Principal or such persons to whom authority has been delegated.
18. No pupil shall sell or attempt to sell any items or tickets for any competition, request sponsorship or donations, with,
on or in proximity to the school, for personal gain or for the gain of any organisation, with the exception of gain for
Pinehurst Primary School.
19. The school shall not be held responsible for the loss or damage to any pupils valuable possessions. Such valuables
(e.g. jewellery, CD players, cellular telephones, watches etc.) are the responsibility of the pupil.
20. Cellular telephones may be brought to school, but the following rules shall apply:
20.1 Cell phones must be switched off during the school day.
20.2 Any cell phone that rings or is played with, during the school day, will be confiscated. This phone will be
returned after a period of time. The length of time will be at the Principals discretion.
20.3 The school shall not accept responsibility for the pupils cell phones, nor will lost or missing cell phones be
investigated.
21. Notwithstanding the fact that a certain act or omission may not be a direct contravention of these rules, any act or
omission, which in the opinion of the Principal or Deputy Principal or Governing Body constitutes behaviour
unbecoming a pupil of Pinehurst Primary School, shall be deemed a contravention of Rule 1 above.
22. In these rules, unless the context indicates the contrary, words importing the singular shall include the plural and visa
versa.
23. In these rules, unless the context indicates the contrary, words relating to gender shall also mean the opposite gender.
24. Contravention of School Rules:
24.1 Pupils who contravene the School Rules may be punished by:
24.2 Having certain privileges withdrawn.
24.3 Being given school community service tasks or other suitable tasks to perform.
24.4 Having to attend detention classes.
24.5 Being made to compensate for property negligently or wilfully damaged, defaced, soiled or taken without
permission.
24.6 Being suspended, if in the opinion of the Principal or Governing Body, the language and / or conduct of
such pupil is of such a nature as to endanger the maintenance of a proper standard of moral conduct, discipline or
social well-being at the school.
24.7 Expulsion. The Governing Body shall decide whether or not to recommend to the Head of the Western
Cape Education Department that a pupil be expelled.
