SFPC Operational Definition Instructions

1. Document an operational definition for a premium peanut using only the materials available in the room.
Application of the operational definition must preserve the peanut and the shell in original condition (i.e., no
destructive testing, marking, opening, or tasting). A separate group of inspectors will use your operational
definition to classify peanuts as either premium or subpremium.
2. Pick a group of 12 peanuts with at least 3 that would be classified as premium peanuts and at least 3 that
would not be classified as premium peanuts (i.e., subpremium peanuts) using the documented operational
definition.
3. Number the egg carton slots from 1 to 12 and place each of the 12 peanuts in a separate slot.
4. On a separate sheet of paper create a classification key that identifies each numbered slot as containing
either a premium or subpremium peanut.
5. Write the name of your team on both the operational definition document and the classification key.
6. Place the documented operational definition and the classification key inside the egg carton with the peanuts
and carefully close the carton.

SFPC Inspection Instructions

1. Bring an inspector into the room and provide the inspector with the SFPC Premium Peanut Operational
Definition. (Do not provide the classification key.)
2. In random order, remove 1 peanut at a time from the egg carton for the inspector to classify as premium or
subpremium and then return the peanut to its original egg carton slot after inspection.
3. Record the classification for each peanut in the SFPC Inspection Data Sheet.
4. Continue classifications until all 12 peanuts have been inspected.
5. Repeat the classification process (steps 14) with each inspector.
6. After all inspectors have classified the peanuts once, repeat the process to get a second set of classifications
for each inspector.
7. After all inspectors have classified all 12 peanuts twice, transfer the classification key entries into the
Expert column of the SFPC Inspection Data Sheet.
8. Bring back all the inspectors and review the results as a team.
