Judeu laico, filho de um mgico itinerante

nasce no Rio de Janeiro em 1930, mas

Belo Horizonte, sendo criado, junto a seu

A secular Jewish man, son of a travelling

Perlov was born in Rio de Janeiro in

his life in Belo Horizonte, being raised

who will be his life partner and also the
producer of Diary 1973-1983.

** Paulo Emlio Salles Gomes (1916-1977) was one of
the great critics and historians of Brazilian cinema
and one of the principal organizers of the Filmoteca
do Museu de Arte Moderna de So Paulo, which in
1956 became the Cinemateca Brasileira. His intellectual trajectory was marked by a tireless militancy for
Brazilian cinema and the preservation of cinematic
memory. In 1965 he created the first film program at
the Universidade de Braslia, and three years later he
became professor of film history and Brazilian cinema
at USP. In addition to the articles published throughout his life and posthumously gathered in Paulo Emlio: Crtica de Cinema no Suplemento Literrio, his
principal works include a monograph about Jean Vigo
(originally published in 1957 in France) and Cinema:
Trajetria no subdesenvolvimento.

I have seen Pierre Gourjon he filmed with Gonnets help a film about a painter, Caillaud
they will edit it now there are some very beautiful things. On 7 February I will be the
translator at the Cinematheque of the screenings of Caiara, Canto do Mar and Simo, o Caolho
an homage to Cavalcanti. Gonnet hasnt seen that young Brazilian filmmaker who you asked me
to see and I do not know his address. I would very much like to see him.
I will try to send a copy of Tante Chinoise to Brazil but I dont know if I will be able to
because the British F. already gave me one as a present.
(Do you see any possibility for television? Brazilian version?)
Old Aunt China is opening some doors for me here, but I do not believe it will be possible to
make what I so much wanted: Loterie Nationale. I will keep the decoupage in my pocket to be
able to make it by my own means in a few years. Im thinking of going soon to Israel, and a
few days ago I started preparing the decoupage of a little film, a political caricature about
Hitlers little disciple, Nasser. I believe you know I am very socialist, but very Jewish.
(Sometimes I make this statement inversely as well.) Need I say more?
previously discouraged me from making it and they are now interested. Maybe I will be able to
do a French screening or remake it in 35mm. We will see!
The film is ready: I was very happy (to use your expression), about Germaine Tailleferres
music it is very good and I definitely finished editing according to it. The commentary (in
English) is done well by Stanley Reed (secretary of the British Film Institute). The color is
good, the technical quality of the sound not so much (16mm...). About the film itself, it is now
up to others to say. I myself know nothing to say besides the desire to make another film, or
to start all this again. Tante Chinoise was presented at the National Film Theatre 4 times
and one could say it was a success: imagine! The English, so reserved and modest, expressed
themselves from the beginning to the end the same way the 4 times (more or less 2,000 people
have already seen it thats something, no?) One could say, regarding the English public
who saw the film, that they were very amused, at the cost of the French, Blaise Crouton, Tante
Chinoise, Madame Doralice Palmon etc. The people of the Br. Film are very pleased with the
result, I think; actually, I must say I havent met more decent people than those here in
Europe, in their behavior and their way of viewing an artist, etc. Here in Paris, Langlois,
Lotte Eisner, Mary Meerson, Resnais, and some critics of Positif and Cinema 57 have already
seen the film and the reaction was good, even very good. I also showed it to producers who had

fotografias de paisagens em todos

Para ele a televiso uma janela
sobre Israel e a realidade global. Por

dramas dos quais ele cuidadosamente

ele expresse suas posies sociais de
modo mais direto, algo que ele evita
intencionalmente quando observa outros
objetos fotogrficos. O congelamento

O prprio Perlov muitas vezes o objeto

Entre o cinema
e a fotografia
Ainda nos anos 60, as fotografias
de Perlov eram imediatas, simples
e humanas, despidas de metforas
nacionalistas ou sociais. Nas fotografias
vemos pessoas passando na rua,
esperando pelo nibus ou sentando num
caf.

realmente natural? Andr Gide disse
uma vez que se um homem se olha no
espelho, ele raramente olha diretamente
em seus prprios olhos. Ele faz uma pose.
Se ele olhar diretamente em seus olhos,
ele pode perder os sentidos. As pessoas
constantemente agem como se estivessem
sendo filmadas, elas nunca so naturais.
Agora mesmo estou falando com voc e
estou sendo filmado na sua frente. Falo
dele. O natural no existe. claro que

libido, como num encontro entre um
homem e uma mulher, que surge quando
levanto a cmera para filmar algo. O
constrangimento esconde certa alegria.

O Dirio
Eu fao filmes documentrios e no
fices. A aleatoriedade da minha
vida me levou a essa escolha, e, no
fundo, eu gosto muito desse gnero. Eu
sempre quis escrever uma autobiografia
fictcia que tivesse tambm um carter
pictrico. Quando comecei o Dirio,
tive oportunidade de trabalhar numa
perspectiva autobiogrfica.
Eu tenho um grande amor pelas pessoas
que filmo. preciso ser paciente com
elas, pois, ao film-las, arrancamo-las
de suas vidas privadas. Como captar
um estado psicolgico, como apreender
um personagem, como descrever um
lugar: minhas escolhas so bastante
subjetivas. Minha personalidade, por
eu ser autor, muito dominadora. Eu
utilizo o dispositivo cinematogrfico
como intermedirio entre a realidade e o
The Diary
I make documentary and not fiction
films. The randomness of my life led
me to this choice. Deep down, I really
like this genre. I have always wanted
to write a fictitious autobiography that
also had a pictorial character. When I
began the Diary, I had the opportunity
to work in an autobiographical
perspective. I have a great love for
the people I film. It is necessary to be
patient with them, as filming them
I pull them from their private lives.
How to capture a psychological state,
how to apprehend a character, how to
describe a place: my choices are very
subjective. My personality as an author
is very dominating. I use the cinematic
device as an intermediary between
reality and the spectator. I impose my
vision on the materials. In this sense,
my Diary is my document of identity.
I try to touch the fragile boundary
between life and art. Exposing oneself
in ones art is very threatening: your
private life and your nerves are at
everyones reach. I would like to make
a film in the form of fables: to make a
shot to raise a question then shoot
another as if it were a visual answer.
I like to search, to innovate...
A cmera
instrumento voyeur e morto. Pode-se
afirmar que, paradoxalmente, as cmeras
que filmam sem nenhuma seleo prvia,
como as cmeras de vigilncia, fornecem
os documentos mais reais. Mas, trata-se
de um pensamento especulativo.
A filmagem a montagem
filmagem. Elas so perfeitamente
intencionais, mesmo se elas parecem,
The Camera
The camera sees but does not think, it
is the man who is behind it who thinks.
If a mans spirit does not animate the
camera, it is limited to being a voyeur
and dead instrument. One can affirm
that, paradoxically, the cameras that film
without any previous selection, like security
cameras, provide the more real documents.
But this is a speculative thought.
Filming - Editing
In this Diary, my choices constantly impose
themselves, before and after the filming.
They are perfectly intentional, even if they
seem, at times, to be the fruit of chance.
At the moment of editing, in some form,
the material is put on a flat, clean
surface, which is necessary to analytically
construct the film, even if it deals with the
most banal daily matter. I like very much
the films of Jean Rouch and Frederick
Wiseman, but my approach is different.
During filming, I opt for the best possible
and deliberately chosen selection. I dont
act out the facts; the facts exist beyond
me, in real life. My intervention is on the
psychological plane: I try to determine
the relations between filmed objects and
people. I like the wonderful relations that
200
201
The Commentary
I also create an order for my own
existence. My commentary in off
determines the narration. Commentary
is an instrument of thought and not
sense. At first, I wanted to record the
commentary in the place of filming, as
most of the sentences came to me while
I filmed. Finally, I decided not to film
the brute commentary, but rework it,
O comentrio
Eu crio tambm uma ordem para minha
prpria existncia. Meu comentrio
em off determina a narrao e um
instrumento do pensamento e no do
sentido. A princpio, eu quis gravar
o comentrio no lugar da filmagem,
pois a maior parte das frases nasceram
enquanto eu filmava. Finalmente, eu
decidi no utilizar o comentrio bruto,
mas retrabalh-lo, limpar as frases para
que ficassem gramaticalmente certas. O
comentrio , ento, gravado em estdio,
j a filmagem mais espontnea.
A palavra
coisas. Eu opto por uma cmera esttica
The Word
I decided to make a diary and not ignore
literature. I do not accept the idea that
the documentary has nothing to do with
literature. For me, documentary
cinema is very literary: in life, people
speak a lot and tell things. I opt for a static
camera when I film someone speaking.
The word is also a form of representation,
of spectacle and my camera tends,
therefore, to turn itself of. The linguistic
dimension is very important in Diary.
Language is an instrument of thought,
while vision and hearing are instruments
of sense, of perception.
Television
Documentary cinema only interests me
in its poetic dimension. The documentary
genre has become very journalistic,
very technical, with prior documentary
field research that suffocates the subject
before the author even begins to create.
My feeling as a filmmaker is that with
television and video we entered a new
202
203
A televiso
O cinema documentrio me interessa
a criar.
Eu perteno, entretanto, a
uma gerao de transio, muito confusa, e
a televiso no faz ainda parte de mim, do
meu mundo, mesmo que eu tenha sofrido
influncia dela. Existe um conflito entre a
linguagem do cinema e a da televiso, assim
como uma diferena no que diz respeito
recepo.
O consumo televisivo
