EXCELLENCE IN
MARINE MATERIALS

Copper nickel has enhanced strength and corrosion resistance while maintaining a high inherent resistance to biofouling. The 90/10 copper nickel alloy
is the most commonly used wrought copper alloy for marine engineering and can be found in seawater systems for naval, commercial, shipping,
offshore oil & gas, multi-stage flash desalination and aquaculture. Alloys with higher nickel content, and those which are more highly alloyed with
chromium, aluminium and tin are used where greater resistance to flow conditions, sand abrasion, wear and galling are required, as well as higher
mechanical properties or castability.
While the more economical 90/10 copper nickel alloy is the most widely used, the 70/30 copper nickel alloy is stronger. Iron and manganese levels are
important in optimising the corrosion resistance of both alloys.

TUBE
NES/DEFSTAN CuproRight 70 & CuproRight 90
CuproRight 70 and CuproRight 90 are exclusively available from Righton and conform to Naval Engineering Standards (NES). NES may require specific
testing procedures to include hydrostatic and ultrasonic testing together with more general criteria such as dimensional tolerances.
Copper Nickel 90/10 NES/DEFSTAN 02-779
90/10 has excellent corrosion resistance in reasonably clean, flowing sea water (from 1 to approx 3.5 m/s), with good resistance to stress corrosion
cracking. It has good cold and hot working properties and is readily weldable.
Copper Nickel 70/30 NES/DEFSTAN 02-780
70/30 is stronger than 90/10 but slightly less resistant to biofouling. It has excellent corrosion resistance in flowing polluted sea water (from 1 to
4.5 m/s) and has excellent resistance to impingement attack and stress corrosion cracking. 70/30 retains its strength at moderately elevated
temperatures, has good cold and hot working properties and is readily weldable.
90/10 and 70/30 can be used in a variety of applications including: Seawater cooling systems, centralised cooling systems, scoop intake systems, bilge
and ballast systems, sanitary systems, fire fighting systems, inert gas systems, deck steam pipes, feed lines to desalination plant, cargo heating coils,
hydraulic and pneumatic systems, heat exchanger condensers, preheaters and evaporators, sheathing of offshore platform legs and cross-members.
Copper C106
This is produced from deoxidised non-arsenical copper and therefore does not encounter any embrittlement. It can be used in general engineering
applications where the highest conductivity is not required.

COPPER NICKEL PRESS FITTING SYSTEMS

The pressfitting system was developed for pipes carrying sea water in shipbuilding and other marine applications. It combines the advantages of stainless
steel, carbon steel and copper systems together with high sea water corrosion resistance, resistance to stress corrosion cracking and high strength.
The pressfitting system offers a range of sizes from DN12 to DN102.
Copper nickel press fitting systems are quick to use and have lower labour costs in comparison to conventional connection technology. It is a simple, clean
and economical system as the seal rings are protected from dirt and no consumables such as oxygen or gas are required. This system has been in use for over
30 years, is extremely safe and there is no confusion with third-party products. There is no danger of fire as welding and soldering are not necessary and
products can be easily identified. Application ranges are easily identified by the plug colours, product materials can be distinguished by the indicator
colours and unpressed connections are also easily identifiable.

ROD & BAR

Aluminium Bronzes CA104/NES/DEFSTAN 02-833/02-834
Aluminium bronzes have high strength combined with good resistance to oxidisation and corrosion particularly in marine environments. They are hard,
strong constructional materials that are very resistant to wear. Additional nickel improves corrosion resistance and strength whilst additional silicon
improves wear resistance and strength. Aluminium bronzes can be used in many marine applications including: Propellers, heavy duty pumps, petrochemical engineering, seawater handling components, bearings, bushings and housings.
Copper Nickel 90/10 & 70/30 NES/DEFSTAN 02-779/780
The 90/10 and 70/30 copper nickel alloys are essentially ductile and available in all product forms. Their strength is increased by cold working but not
age hardening. They can be joined by brazing and welding. If weld consumables are used, the 70/30 copper nickel electrodes and filler metals are
normally preferred for both alloys. No post weld heat treatment is required to maintain corrosion resistance. Copper nickel can be welded to steel
using appropriate 65Ni-30Cu consumables. Typical applications for copper nickel alloys include shafts & bearing bushes, bolting, pump & valve trim
and components, gears and fasteners.
High Strength Copper Nickel NES/DEFSTAN 02-835
NES/DEFSTAN 02-835 is an alloy designed to meet the cruel and demanding requirements of extreme marine applications as its strength and
toughness is far superior to that of conventional copper nickels and aluminium bronzes. It has excellent corrosion strength, resistance to hydrogen
embrittlement and resistance to stress corrosion cracking. In addition it has good machinability and low magnetic permeability. NES/DEFSTAN 02-835
is the ideal material for the manufacture of fasteners, shafts, valve & pump components and flanges.
Naval Brass CZ112/CW712R
The addition of tin in CZ112 improves corrosion resistance especially in sea water and the addition of lead improves machinability thereby making
CZ112 the ideal material for heat exchangers, structural applications and forgings.
Phosphor Bronze PB102/CW451K
Phosphor bronzes have good corrosion resistance and good elastic properties. Additions of lead and/or tellurium improve machinability. They are
particularly good for bearing manufacture and condenser tube plates or for components subject to friction.
Leaded Bronze SAE 660
Leaded bronze is easily malleable and provides long life service due to its strong resistance to corrosion and abrasion. SAE 660 is one of the
continuously cast semi finished products providing benefits which include: Completely sound castings that are free from pores, shrinkage, cavities,
blowholes and segregation, smooth clean surfaces with close dimensional tolerances, good machinability and no hard casting skin. Its resistance to
brine and seawater make it a suitable material for pump and valve components.
Manganese Bronze CZ114/CW721R
Cast manganese bronze, has outstanding mechanical properties to withstand the most rigorous industrial requirements. Its high strength and
corrosion resistance make it ideal for heavy-duty construction. Applications for manganese bronze includes marine hardware, boat parts, rudders,
clamps and prop shaft nuts.
Castings & Forgings
Available in the following alloys: Leaded bronze, leaded gunmetal, aluminium bronze, high strength copper nickel, nickel aluminium bronze, silicon
aluminium bronze, phosphor bronze, copper nickel 70/30, copper nickel 90/10 plus aluminium, stainless and carbon steels.

Vessels constructed from aluminium can stay in service for several decades without sustaining any measurable corrosion. Aluminium has a low weight
factor and requires little maintenance. Products in aluminium can be easily fabricated and have a good post weld yield strength and fatigue resistance.
Aluminium can be used in a variety of applications including hull and deck structures for fast ferries and workboats, trim for pleasureboats, ladders,
hatches, portholes & bulkheads.

KITS
Righton can offer profiled aluminium boat kits, nested according to CAD drawings; Kits can be processed using plasma, waterjet or laser facilities,
with each piece line marked as requested.

TRIPLATE
Triplate is a transition joint that is homogeneously bonded together by vacuum-explosion welding and is often used in shipbuilding for welding an
aluminium superstructure to a steel hull. Triplate consists of three metals with a steel base material, a corrosion resistant aluminium alloy as the
upper layer and, to promote bonding, pure aluminium as the intermediate layer. The explosive cladding/welding process produces a perfect
metallurgical bond which is stronger, more secure and more durable than traditional rivets & welding. Due to its superior bend radii and flexibility
more complex profiles can be produced with Triplate.

TRIPLATE
Atmospheric vs Vacuum Cladding
Although atmospheric cladding is an effective process, far superior results are achieved if the explosive bonding process is carried out under vacuum.
Apart from being a much quieter process, its greatest advantage is that it is not necessary to remove any air from the advancing, explosive bonding jet.
This allows less violent explosives to be used for bonding which in turn produces a smoother wave bond between the aluminium and steel. The ductile
aluminium steel joint also aids easy sawing and forming.
Atmospheric

Oxide agglomerations & porosity can cause corrosion, in spite of protective coatings.

Does not apply.

Bending of aluminium-steel strips can be difficult due to the coarser bond structure.

Very good formability due to ductile aluminium-steel joint.

Production control is limited by variable weather conditions.

Optimal process control due to constantly reproducible vacuum conditions.

Aluminium-steel joint is hard, making sawing & forming difficult.

Easy sawing & forming due to ductile aluminium-steel joint.

Pressure Locked Open Flooring

This product is designed to give the maximum structural performance in corrosive conditions and is manufactured in either standard panel form 4.0m
long x nominally 1.0m wide, or alternatively fabricated to suit a customers drawings. By virtue of its design it is easily cut to shape without weakening
its load carrying capacity.
The main feature is its pressure locked construction. The specially formed transverse bars are pressed under 90 tonnes pressure into Y-shaped notches
in the load bearing bars, giving a fully effective joint with no dependence on welding.
It is available with a range of different load bearing bar sizes mainly at 41mm or 30mm pitch with transverse bars at 100mm pitch. However, other bar
arrangements are available. For maximum slip resistance, a serrated top surface is also available. Stairtreads are available with a selection of slipresistant nosings: Stairtread with extruded section sighting bar, stairtread with Ferodo slip-resistant insert & stairtread with carborundum slipresistant insert.

Friction Stir Welded Panels

The friction stir welded method of joining is based on the fact that the metal is subjected to heavy plastic deformation at high temperatures but lower
than the melting point. When the rotating tool is plunged into the metal, friction heat is generated. The tool produces severe plastic deformation
under high pressure, during which the weld interfaces are stirred together and a homogenous structure is formed.
Compared with fusion welding, friction stir welding provides increased strength, improved sealing and completely void free, leakproof joints. The weld
is in principle flush with the parent material. There is reduced heat distortion and improved repeatability. The FSW operation comprises a small
number of variables which it is easy to monitor: Tools, feeding rate, rpm and position of tool. This also permits close tolerances.
Deck panels: Profiles joined together to form panels
up to 3m in width and 14.5m in length.

Fibreglass Floor Plate & Fibreglass Mesh Grating

Fibreglass gritted plate is a tough corrosion and slip resistant floor plate which is electrically non-conductive. A unique combination of pultruded
fibreglass plate and epoxied anti-skid grit surface provides a textured solid sheet flooring that is ideal for both wet and dry applications. It provides a
long lasting maintenance free alternative to steel plate for severe, corrosive environments. It is widely used for walkways, pool decks, bridge decks and
splash walks.
Fibreglass grating is lightweight, corrosion and impact resistant. It is also non-conductive and thermally stable.
Available as moulded or pultruded with an epoxy grit surface to improve traction, it provides a long lasting
maintenance free surface for walkways, ramps, pit covers, stairs and platforms.

SHEET
PVC Foam
A lightweight sheet suitable for interior and exterior use that has an ideal combination of strength and durability. Its hard gloss finish ensures good
resistance to knocks and scratches. PVC foam offers good fire performance up to Class 1 surface spread of flame (in accordance with BS476 Part 7).
The material can be thermoformed and excellent results are achieved when it is bent, cut, welded, glued or drilled.
Integral skin foam sheet is made of rigid PVC with a sandwich like structure. Manufactured in one single operation, it consists of two solid layers and a
cellular one both of the same material. It has a firm smooth skin with a silk gloss finish. It can be used for all applications where resistance to humidity,
weathering and aggressive substances is required. The sheets conduct very little heat and thus provide excellent thermal insulation. The material
offers good flexural strength combined with low relative density.

SHEET
UV Stabilised Polyethylene
This material is excellently suited for the fabrication of all sorts of components on board boats. It has excellent corrosion resistance and is completely
resistant to sunlight and water. Fabrication is achieved with common woodworking machinery and tools and the flat surfaces and edges need no further
finishing, just sawing, planing and milling. The sheets cannot warp and they are ideal for parts which are exposed to harsh marine conditions and/or to
heat (up to 95oC). It can be easily cleaned and with a durable finish, it is a solid, non-laminated material which will never be subject to delamination.
In view of the fact that the sheets need not be sanded, veneered or painted, the saving in labour cost will prove to be considerable. The unique formula
of this material resists almost every form of staining, especially those resulting from severe marine conditions. Almost no conventional glue sticks to
the sheets. When connecting and fastening the material it is recommended to drill oversized holes for the fastening of bolts or screws. This is especially
important in the vicinity of cookers and in engine rooms. The material has been approved for contact with food. It is available in polar white, black and
a range of colours.

PIPE & FITTINGS

Plastic Piping Systems
Plastic piping systems are ideal for applications where a corrosion free material is required. Not only is the long service life of the system guaranteed
but savings are made due to the reduced service and maintenance costs. Plastic piping systems weigh five times less than metal providing a saving of
several tonnes per ship, allowing for more freight or passengers and thereby increasing profit. These systems are easily installed, requiring only a small
amount of tools and, as prefabrication can occur off-site, installation time on board is also significantly reduced.
Plastic piping systems can be used in numerous applications including water treatment, ballast water treatment, cooling systems, air venting, hot &
cold drinking water, technical water, grey & black water, ballast systems and transport & bunker lines.
Plastic piping systems are available in the following materials: ABS, PVC-C, PVC-U, PE 100, PP-H, PB, PP-R and PPFR.
Our range of pipe and fittings include continuous elbows at various degrees, concentric and eccentric reducers, equal and reduced tees, fixed flanges,
stub flanges provided with steel backing rings, flange adaptors and blind flanges, sleeve joints, caps and bellmouths. They are available in nominal
diameters from 25mm to 1000mm.

COMPOSITE PANELS FOR MARINE INTERIORS

Composites have grown in popularity for marine use because they offer a more practical alternative to fashioning interiors than numerous pieces of
wood or steel. For some time, boatbuilders have sought more economical processing methods and materials for outfitting. Composites are favoured
for their low magnetism and resilience to shocks. They are also light, strong in tension, stiffer for their weight than steel or aluminium and fatigue
resistant. They do not corrode in the marine environment or tend to damp vibrations, they have low maintenance and can be fabricated into complex
shapes. Composites simplify outfitting and provide strength and resilience to withstand wave induced shock loads. Composites also have suitable
marine fire approvals.
Marinecore Aluminium Honeycomb Panels
Marinecore honeycomb panels are available in a wide range of decorative laminate finishes,
real wood veneers and marble/granite options. The panels are lightweight with a high bond
strength, high structural stiffness, mechanical strength and have low brittleness of the
laminate which enables cutting without chipping. In contrast to conventional honeycomb
composite panels, the aluminium core and the coilcoated aluminium cover sheets are
bonded in a continuous process. The advantages are improved product quality and surface
evenness. The material does not become brittle-hard but shows tough and resilient
properties and excellent peel strength.
Marinecore honeycomb panels are ideal for many applications including C-Class bulkheads, internal modules
(e.g. galleys, toilets, showers, etc), ceilings, cabin linings, doors, tables, furniture, partitions and overhead bins.
Standard type panels are supplied with high grade polyester lacquering on both sides, which renders them highly
suitable for additional coating, laminating or printing. On request, panels can be supplied with a high grade PVDF-fluoride
polymer lacquer finish.
Fire conformance: BS 476 Part 7 Class 1, BS 476 Part 6 Class 0 IMO: C-Class division and non combustible bulkhead. Meets requirements of the
FTPC MSC.61 (67) concerning non-combustibility, flame spread, smoke development & toxicity & of HSC Code MSC.40 (64) (fire restricting material).

COMPOSITE PANELS FOR MARINE INTERIORS

Marinecore Aluminium Composite Panels
Marinecore aluminium panels offer the very latest in composite technology for interior and exterior cladding and is available in a standard range of
colours, metallic, brush and mirror finishes. A standard PVDF coating is applied to the aluminium coil prior to lamination into a composite panel. The
0
aluminium coil is processed via a continuous coil coating process and stoved at temperatures between 200 - 260 C. Lighter than solid aluminium,
marinecore composite panels are rigid and offer high strength with excellent torsion and bending strength. Coated with a PVDF resin, the panels
withstand extreme weather conditions and the possibility of acid, alkali and salt spray corrosion is minimised. They are also unaffected by temperature
change and the long term bask of ultra violet rays. The core of the panel comprises of Viscoelastic high molecular resin preventing cracking or
breaking, yet providing high strength, stiffness and impact resistance. Compared to other materials of the same weight (steel, solid aluminium, tile,
plywood etc) these panels have a greater sound transmission loss. Panels are fire resistant to BS476 PT 7 Class 1 & BS476 PT 6 Class 0.

TITANIUM
Titanium forms a very tenacious surface oxide layer, which is an outstanding corrosion inhibitor. In many harsh environments it can outlast competing
materials as much as 5:1. It is corrosion resistant and has a high strength/weight ratio. Titanium is also erosion-corrosion resistant (critical speed in sea
water is high. At speeds below 35m/s the passivated film is not removed). Titanium can be used in sea water desalination plants and for flow lines and
riser pipes in the offshore industry.

CORTEN
Corten is recommended for use where high structural strength is needed and where maintenance is difficult. It is a high strength, low alloy, weldable
structural steel possessing excellent weathering resistance and it is ideal for galvanising in marine and other aggressive environments. Corten is
available in sheet & plate in 1mm - 50mm thicknesses.

TUNGUM ALLOY TUBE & FITTINGS

Highly resistant to sea water and its atmosphere, Tungum resists both stress and crevice corrosion to offer outstanding serviceability. It has a high
strength/weight ratio, excellent ductility and first class fatigue properties. Tungum can be used in a wide range of applications in both hydraulic and
pneumatic circuits. Tungum is available in 8mm - 50mm OD.

TUBE BUNDLES
Tubes in various metals in a weatherproof plastic jacket for pneumatic and hydraulic control systems including thermal insulated tubing for steam
traced metering, sampling and analyser lines, steam and condenser lines and electrically traced tube bundles for metering, sampling and analyser
lines. Tube bundles provide highly economical solutions, they can be easily and quickly laid like an energy cable, require no maintenance and are
extremely well protected against mechanical damage, abrasion and corrosion. Tube bundles can be delivered in very long units, thus reducing waste
material and the need for tube connections.
