A Conversation between two friends who work in South Loop, Chicago.
Student A lives in Wheaton; student B lives in Evanston.
A: I prefer to live close to work.
B: Me, too. I am tired of commuting. Living in Chicago is nice, but its too expensive.
A: Thats true. Living in Wheaton is less expensive than living in Chicago.
B: If I could choose, I would rather not commute every day.
Grammar:
The difference between prefer and would prefer (to do) =would rather (do):
1.) We can use "prefer to (do)" or "prefer (doing)" to say what you prefer in general:
EX: I don't like cities. I prefer to live in the country OR I prefer living in the country.
I prefer something to something else.
I prefer to do something rather than (do) something else.
I prefer doing something to doing something else.
2.)
A. We use "would prefer (to do) to say what we want in a particular situation.
EX: A: Would you prefer tea or coffee?
(Would you prefer to have tea or coffee?)
B: Coffee, please.
A: Would you prefer to go by train or by car?
B: Id prefer to go by car.
A: Would you prefer to stay at home or to go to the party?
B: Id prefer to stay at home rather than go to the party.
Notes: Special notes: We say "would prefer to do" (not "would prefer doing"):
