FAQs
Why do I have a registration hold for Spring 2017?

You are not currently enrolled in your remaining competency course(s) or they were not successfully
completed with a grade of C or higher. To see which competency course(s) are remaining, please
review your program plan or contact your academic advisor.

What if I completed my missing class(es) at another school?

An official transcript from the other school needs to be mailed to:

I am currently registered for the missing class(es) at another school, will this
take care of the hold?

Documentation showing proof of registration and payment needs to be presented to your academic
advisor before the hold is removed.

I completed MACRAO or MTA at my community college. Why do I have a hold?

MARCAO or MTA satisfies CMUs University Program (UP) requirements and may fulfill some
competency requirements.

What are Competencies and what is required?

Important skills, obtained through specific classes, that are necessary for success in future
coursework at CMU.
Freshman Composition, Intermediate Composition, Oral English and Mathematics must be
completed before earning 56 credits.
Two of the four Writing Intensive (WI) courses must be also completed before earning 56 credits.
o The other two WI courses and one Quantitative Reasoning (QR) course must be completed
prior to graduation.
A grade of C or higher must be earned in each course to fulfill competency.

How can Competencies be completed?

Freshman Composition is fulfilled by successfully completing (or transferring in the equivalent of)
ENG 101, ENG 103 & 193, ELI 198 or passing the CLEP exam
o Students must take the CLEP (College Composition Examination) in their first semester at
CMU.
Intermediate Composition is fulfilled by successfully completing (or transferring in the equivalent of)
ENG 201.
Oral English is fulfilled by successfully completing (or transferring in the equivalent of) COM 101,
COM 103, TAI 170, ELI 199, TAI 302, COM 267, COM 269, or COM 357.
Mathematics is fulfilled by successfully completing (or transferring in the equivalent of) a MTH or
STA course numbered 105 or higher.
o MTH 101 (formerly MTH 055), MTH 151, 152, and 200 will not fulfill this competency
requirement.

What are the Writing Intensive (WI) requirements?

12 credits of WI-designated coursework are required and 6 credits must be completed before
earning 56 credits.
o Six credits must be completed in the University Program (UP).
o Six credits can be completed within a major, minor, degree, or the UP.
WI credit cannot be transferred into CMU. Transfer students meeting Transfer Block, MACRAO or MTA
satisfy six credits of WI coursework.
Courses must be designated WI to fulfill the requirement (example: PHL 100WI).

I know the class I need to fulfill my missing Competency course(s). How do I


get the hold removed? -ORI dont know what class I need to fulfill my missing Competency course(s).
