Answer guide for O Level Chemistry (5070/3) – Paper 3 Practical Test June 2001

Question 1 (5 marks)

(a) Titration 3 marks

Values 2 marks (initial and final values with no errors)

Average 1 mark

(b)concentration of H2O2, in mol/dm3 (2 marks)

Assuming a 25 cm3 pipette and a titre of 24.0 cm3

conc of H2O2 = 24.0 x 0.100 (1)
25.0 x 2
= 0.0480 (1)
(correct to 0.0001)

Allow 0.05 for 0.0500 etc, answers should be correct to + or - 1 in the third significant figure.

Question 2
Any 23 marks from those below.
R is trilead tetroxide (Pb3O4) and S is potassium iodide.

Test Acceptable alternatives Unacceptable

alternatives
Test 1 R + Heat

solid turn black (1) solid darkens

solid melts (1)

liquid is red (1) red solid scores (1)

effervesces (1) bubbles etc

gas relights a glowing relights a lit splint

splint (1)

oxygen evolved (1) Test must be at least partially

Test 2 R + conc HCl

effervesces (1) bubbles etc

gas bleaches litmus (1) litmus turns white

chlorine evolved (1) Test must be at least partially

correct.
white solid (1)
colour must refer to a solid, ppt etc,
allow cream, off-white or yellow
yellow solution (1)
colour must refer to the solution
(or liquid)
Test 3 R + H2SO4 +S

brown solution (1) Colour must apply to the solution,

allow red, yellow or orange for the
colour. This colour mark can score
+ Na2S2O3 here or later when thiosulphate is
added.
solution becomes turns clear
turns colourless etc, ignore any
colourless (1)
mention of small amounts of solid
white ppt (1)
turns milky or cloudy
Test 4 R + HNO3 Allow brown or red-brown for the
colour of the solid.
black solid (1)
Colours must refer to the solid and
colourless solution (1) the solution specifically. The
solution mark can score here or in
test 5.
Test 5 Test 4 + S allow any shade of yellow. substance, particles,
allow solid, suspension, powder deposit, residue,
yellow ppt (2) turns yellow scores (1) ppt scores sediment, gelatinous,
(1) insoluble etc.
Test 6 S + AgNO3 allow cream or off-white for colour white or yellow
ppt scores (1) irrespective of the
pale yellow ppt (2) colour.

+ HNO3 partially soluble or

does not dissolve etc partially insoluble
insoluble (1) Turns cloudy, milky etc scores (0)
in (a) but ‘milky/cloudy remains’
scores (1) in (b)

allow red, yellow orange etc for
colour of solution
brown solution (1)

+ Na2S2O3
allow shades of white, grey
white ppt (1)

decolourised (1)

ppt dissolves (1)

this must refer to the final solution
colourless solution (1)
