(Self Inflating Balloon)

Focus Topics:
Physical & Chemical
Properties and Changes
Three phases of Matter
Conservation Laws
Mass and Energy

Materials:
ts a little messy, be very careful.
res a lot of accounting for masses. Be as precise as you are accurate.
lain the calculations and experiment with real life parallel examples.

FETY NOTES:

Procedures:
1.

Weigh both the empty bottle (capless)

and the empty balloon.

7. Carefully stretch the balloon over the

bottle mouth. No spilling!

2.

Fill the bottle about 1 inch deep with

vinegar

8. Once attached, lift the balloon so that the

baking soda falls into the vinegar.

3. Light a match and prove to the students

that the gas inside does not put out the
flame. Dont drop the match into it.
4. Stretch the balloon 5-6 times like youd
blow it up.
5. Using the funnel, carefully put 1
tablespoon of baking soda inside the
balloon. Shake to get it all in.
6. Weigh both the bottle (capless) with
vinegar and the balloon with baking soda.
Make sure nothing spills out.

9. Shake the bottle vigorously. When

inflation stops, tie the balloon.
10. Weigh the bottle and the balloon again
together.
11. Carefully remove the balloon, keeping the
gas inside the bottle with your hand and
keeping the balloon sealed.
12. Light a match and insert into the bottle.
The flame should go out.
13. Light a match and carefully pour the gas
(no liquid!) over the match to put it out
