BACKGROUND

Indonesia Society and the World

Indonesia is the largest country in Southeast Asia that increasingly plays a more dominant

role in global affairs. It is the regions only member of the G-20, a leading member and
concurrently chair of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations, ASEAN. Indonesia lies at
the intersection of the Pacific Ocean, along the Malacca Straits and the Indian Ocean, and lies
between two continents (Asia and Australia) along the equator. Over half of all international
shipping goes through Indonesian waters. As the 4th most populous nation in the world,
Indonesia is undergoing a major structural shift in terms of demographics. Of the 240 million
people, over the half of the population is under 30 years old. This provides for dynamic labor
market participation, growing at millions per year. A rapidly urbanizing population also
provides for strategic pools of labor force in centers of investment.
Islamic Non-Bank Financial Institution in Indonesia
Indonesia is a promising market for global growth in Islamic financial sector but the sector is
still in its infancy and its national market share is growing at a snails pace especially in nonbank institution. Without an initiative from the regulatory authorities to nurture and grow
non-bank financial institution, this sector could remain stuck in its infancy for years. A
regulatory environment that attracts new entrants from the more established non-bank
financial institution markets could potentially create a spark to help non-bank financial
institution grow in Indonesia.
In this regard, the State Institute for Islamic Studies (IAIN Salatiga), together with the Islamic
Economics Studies Group (KSEI) and supported by International Institute of Islamic Thought
(IIIT), will be organizing an International Seminar in Salatiga on October 24, 2016, with the
theme: Developing Islamic Economics System through Islamic Non-Bank Financial
Institution (Learning from Malaysia and Turkey).
