Soil slope stabilization by permanent GRP soil-nailing

National road I/66, Banska Bystrica bypass
The Banska Bystrica bypass is an important part of the road infrastructure
system in central Slovakia. Due to the terrain encountered the contractor
had to solve the problems associated with groundworks on embankments
and cuttings. For the stabilisation of these cuts the designer evaluated several possibilities. To achieve high effectiveness in cohesive soils the method
of soil-nailing supplemented with gabion structures was decided upon. As
a result of mathematical modelling the designer requested the installation
of corrosion protected soil nails with lengths of 6 9 m with ability to allow subsequent loading.
According to EN 14490 permanent soil nails can be installed in several
ways. Minovas solution of using GRP (composite) soil nails was accepted by
the contractor and subsequently successfully applied. Using non-corrosive
reinforcement, in this case solid threaded K60-32 GRP bars brought a lot of
advantages. Work with GRP rod reinforcement is, in general, the same as
for the installation of temporary members reinforcing rebars equipped
with centralizers are installed into predrilled boreholes.
Drilling diameter 125 mm, grouting with CEM 42,5 Portland cement with
additives, subsequent activation of all soil nails to 25 kN. Thanks to its
composite structure regular corrosion is eliminated and ground structure,
in this case a soil nailed slope, will reach the required designed lifespan.
Using GRP soil-nails noticeably decreased the time necessary for preparation prior to installation (DCP protection preparation). Transportation and
manipulation costs were also reduced (for comparison: GRP soil nail weighs
1.5 kg/m while the comparable steel version weighs 9.6 kg/m). This also allowed for an improvement in work safety and machinery demand (cranes).
